8 Chicago Donuts We Love

Fritz makes the BEST donuts I have ever tasted. I never tell anyone they are vegan. You'd never know the difference.

36 Hours in New Orleans: Where to Eat

Oh! And also go to Cooter Brown's and have Scotty and Big Ron make you a killer sandwich with some alligator sausage. When you're done eatin' and drinking off of their ridiculous beer menu head next door and have Dave give you a tattoo and Uptown Tats. Yeaaaah! That's how you do New Orleans!

OK now I gotta go book a ticket to get back there.

36 Hours in New Orleans: Where to Eat

@Loakalina - That's totally Juan's Flying Burrito. Go eat there.
Also Parasol's in the Irish Channel for Roast Beef Po'Boys and an ice, cold root beer.
God I miss that town.

Comment of the Day: Strange Things in Your Freezer?

Years ago a genius friend of mine created some sort of photo project for grad school that involved babies stored in cardboard box, like kittens. He created jello molds of babies in a variety of colors/flavors. I begged one off of him after the fact for no real reason and I still have it in my freezer. A little red, jello baby. I've moved three times since acquiring this oddity and am about to move again and it will come with me to the new freezer where I will have to explain it to someone else eventually.

Santullo's Eatery: Satiating Chicago Hipsters' NY Pizza Fix

As a transplanted New Yorker who has lived in Chicago for 11 years i called BS on this place when they opened. I asked how charging $5 a slice was "new york style" when in NY you get a slice for a dollar or two. The doofus hipster behind the counter shrugged and said "I think we import the water."
Please.
Piece is a better pie. Eat that, not this.

Coat Check Tipping in the Recession

I worked coatcheck for 2 seasons at various dance clubs in Chicago in the late 90s. It's definitely a different coat-checking scene than at a fancy restaurant but when I worked the club took $1 for each $2 coat I checked and we got to keep all of our tips. It's not a particularly lucrative "career" choice and from what I've been told a lot of restaurant coat checkers are off-shift wait staff trying to make a few extra dollars. Which works out well for both employee and employer cause it's gotta be cheaper to do that than hire a dedicated coat checker.
I say, if you have the cash, check your coat, if not, don't worry about it. It's not like they are taking notes on who you are and are going to come knocking on your door demanding their $2.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

I think my fondest pork memory would be last year's Thanksgiving when we all showed up for the pot luck and realized that every dish had bacon in it and that's the way it should be every year.
