Obama and McCain Join the Black and White Cookie Debate
I saw this last week at the Zaro's in Grand Central. Wanted to buy it for my wife - but not at that price. I said thanks, but no thanks, to this black and white cookie.

Tell me there's no room for a guy like this on the Food Network. I'd rather watch him make pancakes than watch Rachel Ray. Unless he was ON Rachel Ray of course...now there's an interesting idea....and put it on cable so we can hear the real Kenny!
Flagel = Flat Bagel
A flagel's reason for existence is simple - to provide more crust! It has exactly the same calorie/carb content as a regular bagel so I'm not sure if I believe the story about it being born from the low carb craze.
Hate the name but I love the concept - nothing better than a fresh, flat, sesame bagel with cream cheese!
(PS - The difference between a bagel and bialy is not just that one is boiled and one is not...I believe that they use different flours.)

Dear Slice: Can You or Your Readers Tell Me the Name of This Pizzeria?
Great history - I had my own in Brooklyn. And old enough to remember .15 a slice (extra nickel for Sicilian..and I always asked for the corner piece.)
Did my own reminiscence here:

I'll be looking for a slice today!
Starbucks Introduces the 'Vivanno' Drink: Looks, Tastes Like Smoothie, But Not One
Starbucks is usually my preferred port when I'm out on the road seeing clients. I stay away from the frappucinos and such and usually content myself with a plain water and a forshspeis from the food selections. But I'd definitely go for a smoothie - no denying what they are! Grab one, have a seat, open my laptop, and spend a while....

Chocolate-Covered Matzo, Artisan Style
Hate to admit it - but I've *never* had chocolate covered matzoh. Slathered with butter and salt yes - but not chocolate. Since this is the second time today someone's mentioned this treat, I'm going to try the Epicurious recipe. Thanks Catherine!
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 11: Less Really Is More
I think there's an important connection missed here that relates more to generation gap than portion size. Our parents - those raised in the earlier part of the century - who struggled to attain even middle class status, would always comfort themselves that they had enough food on the table for their family. Although the quality was great - like my own Jewish mother's home cooking - if you didn't leave the table "full" you weren't fed enough. And at family gatherings, that same Jewish mother would be scooping out and dropping another large dollop of mashed potatoes with onions on yur plate even as she asked "would you like more?"
To take less was an insult to the cook and the house!
Food to them was not "art" - it was life, wealth, happiness.
And here comes Passover!

Spumoni: Love It or Leave It?
Hey Baha:
Nostrand Avenue (especially in front of Senior's) and Kings Highway with the low spark of high heeled boys were the hangouts. Can't say much about the Italians and Irish but we certainly mixed it up around Marine Park.
Dang if this ain't makin' me nostalgic...
Spumoni: Love It or Leave It?
To dmorriso -
Unknown to non-Italians!? Per my comments above, we were a bunch of Jews from Brooklyn hangin' there! :)
Although hanging out in the likes of Bensonhurst was sort of exotic...
Spumoni: Love It or Leave It?
My buds and I used to hang out in Spumoni Gardens back in my college days (late 60's). It's such a kick to see that it's been "discovered".
Spumoni was always a treat - never felt it was anything special. In fact, back in the day, if you went out to eat "italian food" - usually spaghetti in clam sauce, veal or chickent parmgiana, or baked ziti - spumoni was always offered as dessert.
Where's the best? You're probably there... and it certainly is the classic! :)
Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway

Who Really Fathered the Everything Bagel?
CapeCodBob:
Haven't seen egg bagels in years - and bialys seem to have disappeared from most bagel shops as well.
You should know that bialys and bagels are made from different flours. And the onions in the center are usually caramelized - not toasted like on bagels.
As far as I know, the only purveyor of quality bialys these days is Kossars on the lower east side....
And has everyone forgotten pletzels and onion boards? Oy, such aches I have for those on a Saturday night....
Who Really Fathered the Everything Bagel?
When I was in college back in the late 60's, I worked at a local Carvel stand. Every now and then one of us would make a mistake ie a sundae with chocolate icre cream instead of a vanilla, a large cone instead of a small, etc.
The owner, either smart or cheap, came up with the idea of just dumping these mistakes into a 5 gallon tub and freezing them. And then he called it "Treasure Island". It was the single most popular flavor we had - people would buy 1/2 gallons of the stuff!
What has this got to do with an everything bagel? Who knows what whimsy created that? A mistake perhaps? :)
PS - My opinion? There should only be 3 types of bagels - plain, poppy, and sesame. And maybe a garlic. Asiago? Feh!

Dear Slice: Di Fara Cheese Combo Clarification; Lucali May Expand, Adding Garden Seating
Illness over the past few months has prevented me from eating the things I'd really like - but one of the top five on my list to hit is pizza. DiFara's is defintely the first and I plan to take my niece and her kids with me - especially since it's Brooklyn and we want to take her kids on a tour.
The cost of pizza in 1964 took me back - I remember paying 15 cents a slice - don't remember what pies cost. And I remember when it went up to 20 cents, me and my buds would haul all the way up to the Lincoln Park area where there was a shop that still charged 15. The pies were cheap enough that a friend and I in Junior HIgh would trek to a shop in Canarsie, buy a pie apiece, and polish them off.
Somehow nothing I've ever eaten since has tasted as good....

Cook the Book: 'Roast Chicken and Other Stories'
When I was growing up in the '50s in the wilds of Brooklyn, Friday night was always the night for roast chicken. We weren't religious but for some reason I knew it was shabbos (sabbath) and it was a special night.
I would spend the afternoon helping my mother - I would grind up chicken livers, eggs, and bread crumbs to make her chopped liver using a cast iron grinder that we clipped to the edge of the table. Sometimes she would make her own blintzes - she would cover the dining room table with striped kitchen towels, make her blintz pancakes, then let them dry out on the towels. Then we would fill them with cheese or fruit, fold them up, and fry them in a skillet when we were ready to sit down to eat.
It was a night that my father came home from work a bit earlier than usual - he was an auto mechanic working in his own gas station garage - and we would all sit down to dinner together. He worked six days a week and this was the only night we would all be able to sit down together at a meal.
I've never had anyone duplicate a roast chicken dinner like that. Memory just makes everything served that much sweeter.
Favorite kitchen appliance?
My favorite? The 12" non-stick skillet that's always sitting on top of my stove waiting for the next dish to be made.
RE: Microwave/vent hoods - We did a complete renovation of our kitchen last spring. We used to have a full Braun vent hood but then opted for the micro/hood combination.Big mistake. We love to grill and bought a grilling skillet so we could do steaks, etc. Basically the micro/hood just can't do the job - the kitchen and the rest of the first floor our house fills with smoke and odor. Smoke alarms screech until we rip them out of their sockets. I'm seriously thinking of taking out the micro/hood and installing a regular range hood. Much more efficient in my opinion.

Flagel = Flat Bagel
I was taking a weekend in Bucks County Pa. When I stumbled upon a Deli named Bagel Junction in Newtown. Their Flagels and traditional Bagels are as good as any in NYC .The lines to the front door were there for a reason and their prices were a relief compared to NY. This place is like home away from home. If your craving NY food this is the place!
Flagel = Flat Bagel
they are made in rockland county; new city and nanuet.. davids, bagel boys, goldbergs bagels. an everything flagel with lox cream cheese is great.
brighton beach russian food markets
I was the kid making the Egg Creams at the 40 thieves. I worked there for a few years in the very early 70s, just as Brighton was starting to change from Easter European immigrants who came there early in the century, to Russian immigrants who started moving there in droves in the 70s and 80s. During the day my boss, Leon, was a big tall crazy Russian who used to yell the name of his girlfriend ("Rifka") at the top of his lungs and scare the living daylights out of me. We would stand side by side on the corner and take money for the Daily News, cigarettes, and magazines. Then I'd have to duck inside and make the occasional egg cream for passers by.

brighton beach russian food markets
I second the Brighton Bazaar. It has a huge hot foods bar...enough to make a lunch out of. Its all the way at the top of the street with the elevated subway tracks. A little further up is a theater and an adjoining cafe and I always eat lunch there when I go to Brighton Beach...their potatoes and beef stroganoff are soooo good.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
I had my first flagel about a year ago.... Bagel Boys in Monroe New york. everything toasted flagel with cream cheese chives and bacon.... delicious... not too many peopple have heard of them but everyone that I have turned onto them becomes addicted... even the little 90 year old lady I shop for..
Starbucks Introduces the 'Vivanno' Drink: Looks, Tastes Like Smoothie, But Not One
I don't think the Starbucks dude was trying to advertise or market... and i agree that calling a banana "pure starchiness" and not fruit is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard. Naked juice is made from fruit.. then theres a banana. Charge a little more for over 20g of protein and throw some fiber in there- thats not just charging extra for naked juice. It's a Vivanno. Plus at my Starbucks they give me an extra scoop of protein because they love me. Plus Starbucks ROCKS!!! Homeslice can just get em some naked juice and cry in a corner.

Flagel = Flat Bagel
Have been loving flagels since 2002! They have it at the Cafe Metro on 48th and 6th Ave of all places. Not sure if other Cafe Metros carry my little breakfast heaven. I like the more crust and the more surface area for spread/filling of a flagel. Definitely better toasted.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
i live in texas and i get my bagels and bialys imported from NY/NJ, from my folks because i believe that's the only place to get good ones.
i may be a bagel snob in saying this, but i refuse to buy them down here because they are far inferior in texas or anywhere else, to what you can get up in the NY/NJ area.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
@jeninewsbite: We might know people in common, depending on how long you've been at the CRFA. Also, I was a temp there for three days a little over two years ago.
..and yeah, what Jen said about finding flagels in our neighbourhood. When Serious Eats tweeted an inquiry about where to find flagels outside NYC I tossed that fact their way.
I prefer bagels- but not at Bagel World, unless they're twisters. The last time I bought bagels at BW they tasted like they the ones that are manufactured in a factory and sold in bags at the supermarket.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
Flats are regular bagels that have been flattened out, and are generally more expensive because of the extra labor. They're crunchier and have more texture- Best Bagels in Great Neck have the best flats (nobody calls them flagels here), expecially the sunflower one. Highly recommended!
Flagel = Flat Bagel
I thought it was just another name for a pletzl, but that one looks like it's halfway between a bagel and a pletzl.
Incidentally, since Ms. Brown mentions southern Palm Beach County, Florida, a few miles up the road in West Boynton "Bagels &..." does a respectable pletzl.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
Terrace Bagels in Windsor Terrace (224 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn) has flagels. They call them flats. I've tried them and I do like the additional surface area--more space for my lox spread--but I generally go for a regular bagel.
In Videos: Kenny Shopsin on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien'
(Sorry. I meant the restaurant mentioned in the documentary have closed since the release of the movie, not the download on Netflix.)
Flagel = Flat Bagel
Okay, as with the bialy/bagel comments...pletzels are great but they're not a flagel. I'm from Long Island, NY and the flagels are quite popular. I think they make for a more-accessible bagel sandwich (not as tall which often leads to squished out inside when one takes a bite). My favorite place, Gabby's Bagels in Syosset, NY, makes the best lox spread (chunks of lox and capers rather than the salty pink spread you find elsewhere) and got me hooked on flagels simply as they allow for more bites of that delicious combo of bagel and lox spread.
Flagel = Flat Bagel
For over 30 years, a flat bagel, with topping or without, has been known as a pletzel - at least in Cleveland.
You can get them small, you can get them, large. They are WONDERFUL. But new, they are not!
In Videos: Kenny Shopsin on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien'
If you have a Netflix account, you can watch a documentary ("I Like Killing Flies," 2003) all about Kenny and his "hole-in-the-wall Greenwich Village greasy/gourmet restaurant" ... it's an instant download, too, if you've got the right browser, etc. (unfortunately now closed since the release of the movie)
