This article reminded of something I once read about growing food: "Everything your Great Grandfather did was better." Bless the Amish for keeping old ways alive.

The PA Dutch are HYPOCRITES!!! Until all of their puppy mills are closed down (and we're talking tens of thousands of animals raised in horrendous conditions) their businesses should be boycotted. Their animal welfare violations are disguting. Don't believe this post - then follow this link to read more about it and stop supporting these atrocities!

I heart Wegmans to anyone still reading this thread. I didn't know about it either until I went upstate for college. I fell in love and savor every time I can make it to one. I would say that if you're heading out of the city for other reasons, make this part of your trip. The combination of upstate Wegman's, Walmart and Target is like heaven to me. Thankfully, I have a trip planned already this weekend. I guess I'll leave some room in my bag for some lemons!

We have a very similar PA Dutch Farmer's Market in Newtown, Bucks County, PA. Very close to Princeton/Kingston. It's open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Also has a fresh fish market, an excellent Mexican food & gourmet cheese counter, lots of fresh produce, eggs, chicken/game, candy, etc. Also a gourmet bakery, Japanese, Middle-Eastern and more. Hours are good and we also have the month-end pig roast and sometimes homemade ice cream. Sometimes, I have to force myself to wait until Thursday to shop - not this week since I'm having eye surgery on Thursday, so no driving until Friday. Bummer!

Meyer Lemons are great in place of bottled key lime juice in my deeeelish pie recipe:
Meyer Lemon Or Key Lime
Mix 4 yolks from extra large or jumbo eggs + 1 extra large egg, with a whisk. Then thoroughly whisk in 1 can sweetened condensed milk, then whisk in 1/3 cup meyer lemon juice or bottled key lime juice.
Pour into a a graham cracker crust made with 1-1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons cinnamon, 1/4 cups packed brown sugar, 3/4 stick melted unsalted butter. Bake in a preaheated 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Cool throughly, then refrigerate for a few hours till chilled. Serve, topping each slice with whipped cream.

I have a Meyer lemon tree that is in a large pot I keep on the patio. The first year I had it, it produced 10 lemons (two years ago), but nothing since! What a tease! I will say, they were delicious. The tree is still alive and doing well and in my sunroom right now for winter. It actually has some blooms on it and I am keeping my fingers crossed it will produce this time : ) It does smell really good in there . . . I wish they made Meyer lemon blossom perfume.

I love meyer lemon season! Yayyy. Last year, I made a meyer lemon meringue pie with freshly squeezed meyer lemon juice. It was pretty good (especially for my first pie).

I love lemons and limes but since my kids are "all growed" and mostly out of the house, I was always finding that I was wasting lemons and limes and they went bad before I could use them. I know, I know, I could buy fewer of them, but I often have a plan that doesn't work out, as planned, and I just don't use them as quickly as I thought. My New Year's resolution was not to waste and now, I buy lemons and limes in season, like now, squeeze every drop of juice I can get out of them into ice cube trays, freeze them and store them in labeled freezer bags. I don't always have peel around when I want it, but now I always have juice and I love not wasting.

So i live, literally, ten minutes down the road from this market and it is delicious. It's not at all surprising for there to be a big influx of high school students if there is an early release from school. The food is truly great! In fact, I planned on meeting people there for lunch on friday.

I just got a 4-pack at Trader Joe's this week in Chicago, so I'm sure they're everywhere.

gsd96rk1 : I don't think Wegmans is worth a trip from the city. I hadn't heard of Wegmans until I went upstate for college and while it is pretty cool, NYC markets have a lot more to offer.

Just see jacquelinec's website - she just didn't do the stuff to make it a "real" link. If you scroll down, there's a link to her meyer lemon stuff.

@Grifola frondosa - Whole Foods in West Hartford carries Meyer lemons. I used them in this lemon yogurt loaf a few weeks ago with excellent results.

My in-laws keep sending us boxes of 'office supplies' - no complaints here. They have tons of lemons in their yard and we pay $2.00 for one here!
I have been posting recipes if folks are interested, and stories of course. Write, cook, write, repeat. Genia's Lemon Cake; Lemon risotto, lemon pasta, lemon cookies, lemon chicken. MM MM MM!

I've asked a produce manager here in Greater Hartford, CT about Meyer Lemon's and all I got was a "Never heard of them".
I'm wondering of they travel well or it's more or less a California thing.
I have to believe if they were grown in quantity, someone would be shipping them to the East Coast and elsewhere.

Can someone tell me how to pronounce avgolemono?

Is Wegman's all that? is it worth a day trip from the city?

Mother:
Both the Columbus and Cowtown markets are on the list of future NJ Dispatches but will wait because they're both kind of dismal and out of season.

I've seen them in Wegmans exactly twice in NJ, I wish they'd carry them more, there surely is a small demand at least, because I go every Saturday, the one Saturday I saw them, I bought them, the next week, they didn't have any.
Why oh why do they deprive me of such lemony goodness?
Next time I go, I will ask and beg and even threaten if I have to, for them to carry them!
ps. no fair on the edit ability Erin!!

There is also a big Pennsylvania Dutch presence at the Columbus Farmers Market on Rte 206, four miles from I 95 exit 7. Deli, meats, bakeries, baking goods - same as above, only further south.

Does anyone know where I can find them in central New York, near Syracuse? I've always wanted to try Meyer lemons but I couldn't find them in Wegmans!
