Halifax, Bay of Fundy and then probably the Cape Breton area. But if you've got a can't miss restaurant, we'll try to find our way there. thanks.
Nice Philadelphia Girl Seeks Decent Hoagie In NYC
I'm curious to hear what Ed thinks, but surprisingly, NYC isn't really a hero (or hoagie) town. As far as the specific Italian sub you are looking for, I'd say Manganero's Hero Boy is probably the best. However, you could probably go into any Italian deli on the other side of the river in Jersey and get a great sub.

Ed,
It's long overdue. You must go to Amazing HotDog in Verona, NJ. It's worth the trip through the tunnel. My friend is the owner. Their specialty is quarter-pound bacon-wrapped deep-fried dogs. The dogs they use are from Best Provisions in Newark (aka Best's) which are the finest dogs you can buy.

East Village suggestions
Ed, thanks for the effort. We ended up going to Max (on Ave. B). Good meal, perfect atmosphere for the crowd, stinky service. Do you know the place?
Ed, I'm going to BLT Fish tonight (downstairs).
Yeah, I probably would've chose those places too, but another couple was picking the place. I'd give it a 5 and 1/2. I had the soft-shell crab sandwich which was very good and the cold seafood platter was a good appetizer and a good portion. (The scallops were standout.) The rest of the table seemed underwhelmed with their entrees. I thought it was tremendously overpriced and the service was bizarre. Incredibly odd waitress, coupled with the fact that it seemed like a contest over which table could be rushed out of the restaurant the fastest. I understand table turnover but this was uncomfortable. (I'd heard about this from a lot of the posts on menupages and citysearch.) We actually would have all ordered dessert but we just went around the corner to a Cosi so the 6 of us could have a conversation in peace. The fact that at a table of seafood lovers (and none of us cheap ones either) nobody could bring themselves to order a $30 lobster roll without losing respect for themselves says plenty about BLT Fish Shack.

Ed, thanks for the quick reply. I've had all of those except Brooklyn Diner's. I agree that it's too bad we can't get true Chicago Dogs here. Now, you need to make a trek to Jersey and visit my friend's place Amazing Hotdog in Verona. Bacon-wrapped deep-fried quarter-pound hotdogs. The place was made for someone like you.
Ed, do you watch Top Chef?
The show is great. Tom comes across very impressively and the chef's (especially the final 4 - and particularly Harold from The Harrison) are damn good. It really doesn't smack of "reality tv" and it's very much about the food and the craft (no pun intended.) Billy Joel's wife not only brings nothing to the table, she takes plenty off of it. She's painful to watch. You, of all people, would love the show because many of the challenges require the chefs to reinterpret/rework/create sandwiches, snacks, hotdogs, etc... Keep your eye out for Harold, he'll probably win and you can tell how impressed Tom is with him. He's gonna be a big name in New York soon.

That may very well be the case, but Rutt's Hut (a well known Biker Hangout) is nowhere near as good as Crif Dogs in Alphabet City. Next time you turn in from a night of fun in the East Village area, give'em a try.
My fav being the dog wrapped in bacon, sour cream, and avacado. It is great!

I must confess I've never heard of Zweigle's. Do they have their own hot dog stands or do they just wholesale and retail their dogs?
'Consumer Reports' Doesn't Know Hot Dogs
What do you know of Zweigle's hot dogs? We had them in Rochester. Quite good.

The dogs at Crif's are a pretty decent knockoff of Rutt's Hut in Clifton, N.J. A former owner of Crif's told me that the unique deep fried dog at Rutt's was the inspiration for Crif Dogs. These dogs may be an aquired taste for some because they are a milder pork based dog. New Yorkers for the most part prefer a more well seasoned beef dog. The owners were smart enough to realize this, so they also offer a grilled all beef Thumanns dog they call the New Yorker. A good place serving a good dog.

Wow, a bunch of great dogs! I'm also a big Crif dog fan. Any opinions on those dogs?

why concede appliances and cars? I don't know who comprises their crack investigative team but their recommendations consistently lead to worse than random outcomes.
But I don't know hot dogs.

Based on this post, I re-issued my 2004 hot dog roundup, and am planning to do a revised report in the near future:

I also like the dogs made by Schaller & Weber, great flavor.

Hey Jeff,
I was in Halifax in September of last year and loved the Economy Shoe Shop on Argyle St in Halifax (good lunch place, food is fine, atmosphere is fun) as well as the Press Gang on Prince St (great food, more upscale, dinner place). For the Bay of Fundy, I recommend food shopping in Truro as there's NOTHING out there. It's truly a beautiful and a lovely break from NYC. I stayed at the Driftwood Park Retreat in Advocate Harbor - you get your own chalet and the owners, Jacques and Gloria, are lovely people. There's a deck and grill. Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend the Cape Chignecto Provincial Park - it's really untouched and beautiful.

Have the hamburger for dessert. Then the custard.
No discussion of New York hot dogs would be complete without mention of Rolf Babiel's incomparable Hallo Berlin wagon, a street cart so good it actually launched a sit-down restaurant. Mandler's, at 16th and Broadway, also produces some of the city's best hot dogs. Let's not forgetr the Stahl-Meyer dogs at Shnack, either, or the plump ones at Sparky's. Meanwhile, I've been all over the place looking for a hot dog with a buttered (or rather margarined) bun, as in my childhood Woolworth's.

Did you know you can get Papaya King dogs uncooked to go, with buns and sauerkraut on the side? I got 2 for me and 2 for my son for dinner last night. He ended up not being home. I cooked all 4 on my Foreman grill till they split. His loss, my gain!
Also, try the andouille dog at F&B on W 23 St. Nice and tangy, offset by a topping of chilled slaw. Good lemonade and rings too.

I just wish the Chicago dog at Shake Shack had a better bun-to-dog ratio. The dog gets lost in there.
