Good Bread: Eataly

Contraband mother leaven? I already thought the bread was super tasty, this makes it even better. I applaud their desire, and the clever sneak, to create the best bread possible. Now if only we can find a way to send all the tourists home..

M. Wells Diner in Long Island City: Beyond Dressed-Up Diner Food?

I went a couple of weeks ago with a friend and we shared the bacon, egg, and potato hash (we had greens on the hash as well), egg sausage sandwich, yogurt and granola, iced coffee. Everything was perfect, pinky swear. The hash was crisp and not greasy, yogurt and granola refreshing and not heavy, iced coffee was super tasty, and I still dream of that egg and sausage sandwich. They had problems with the oven so we couldn't get biscuits and jam and the donuts weren't ready yet. Oh well.. just means we have to go back. YUM

Etta's should be open soon, they have wicked good bloody mary's AND get a big fat fresh cinnamon roll! OR run to and get breakfast and bloody mary's at the 5-Spot.. I think they may be open at 7am?

Solo Celebratory Dinner?

I don't know where you're coming in from, to be able to gauge what resty's are in your area, but my choices would be WD-50 tasting menu, Blue Hill, Daniel, Per Se. On a Wednesday you may have some good luck walking in or giving a call when you're ready to leave your hotel. If you want to walk in for sure... the bar area at Gramercy is deelish, Dovetail, Mas Farmhouse, Perilla. Wherever you go make sure to tell them why you're coming in and how excited you are to eat there.. they will probably throw a treat or two into the mix. You won't feel strange at_all eating alone at any of these, pinky swear.

I was in Chicago in November and celebrated my last day of work travel, two years of travel!!, with the full tasting menu + wine pairings at Alinea. An event I will never in a million years ever forget.

Good luck and have fun!

Pine nuts substitute for pesto?

i'm allergic to pinenuts, boo, and use walnuts and almonds - either toasted or raw, always unsalted so i can adjust the seasoning myself. if you haven't tried it yet, make different greens pesto! kale is super nice, a little lemon and lemon zest is awesome, same with arugula, etc. have fun!

Ice Cream maker?

I have the Cuisinart 1.5q self-compressed model. I can do a soft freeze or a hard freeze in an hour. Made three ice creams and one sorbet for a party on Saturday, was done in a couple of hours. Yummo! Was worth the expense and I gave away my KA ice cream attachment.

Serious Heat: Dressing Up Pasta Salad

hmm.. i'm totally going to put this together for a picnic at the beach this weekend but will go with kewpie mayo instead of regular. that stuff is like crack and would be an interesting flavor profile to add-in.. probably would even use less than the 1/2 cup... yum.

Win Tickets to This Weekend's NY Brewfest

Such a great list! Nice to see Hitachino is involved, too bad Cantillon couldn't bring their tasty Gueuze to the fest. BUT I'm gunna say Firestone Walker as it's kind of awesome they partnered with Trader Joes to bring us tasty brews at a TJ's price. In this economy it's nice to have truly delicious options that aren't $11.99.

Le Creuset: Which to get- round or oval, 5 qt or higher?

I would go for the 7-1/4 or 9qt so it's totally multi-functional. I have a 13qt, yes I'm serious, french oven in Cobalt and a 3.5qt in Caribbean with a grill pan + saucier in the cobalt and white as well as bakers in flame. I like having the mix of colours - makes me happy like those vintage pyrex bowls in rainbow colours.

Have fun - I love mine!

Seattle: Tom Douglas's Dahlia Bakery

Those mini-coconut cream pies are so insanely good! I always go to the bakery when I'm in town. I stay on Bainbridge and have been known to get up for the early ferry to get that breakkie sammie. YUM!

Attire-Au pied du cochon

I was there over summer and it was a mix of shorts, denim, button downs, skirts with little tops, dresses. I agree that you are always safe in black. Not sure if this helps, but I wore a little shift dress and ballet flats and my date had on a vintage short sleeved button down, denim, Chucks.

You will have a blast - the food is beyond tasty.

Poll: How Do You Top Your Pancakes?

I like to use orange butter, unsalted butter with orange zest whirred in the food processor, for my pancakes and a little syrup. I usually cook with slices of banana on top then chow down with the orange butter/syrup. I do the same trick with Dutch Babies but sub lemon zest for the orange + squeeze of lemon and powdered sugar when they come out of the oven. YUM!

I'm with the butter and parm crowd! I also like to toss with a little olive oil and then add some lemon zest and torn pieces of prosciutto on top.

This is my filling - I use with the choco whoopies:

• 2 cups marshmallow cream (Marshmallow Fluff)
• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat until smooth.

Dittos for Sunset Park. I don't know if there are official names, but when a group of us go we always say we're going to Mexico or China and know the difference. You name the region and you're gunna find it in either. Yum and have fun!

Grown-ups should not eat SpaghettiOs

But.. but.. what about BerniO's? And the All Stars? I fully admit that if I'm feeling really hungover and just mehhh and can NOT cook these work in a pinch. They're organic at least! EE! Granted I've only tried a couple of times.. but.. there's a secret stash in my cupboard for emergencies.

Transporting Food in Carry On Luggage

If you are staying at a hotel.. and you buy babka/bread.. what about seeing if you can freeze in the hotel kitchen and packing your whitefish salad in a freezer bag with the frozen bread/baked goods? That would totally work.

Not sure where you are flying in from but the bins above for luggage actually stay pretty cold. I've flown, shhh, wheels of cheese from France back to NY in my carry-on and never had a problem. Some have been very very soft cheeses, too. I would be careful with fish or anything with a creamy dairy base - like mayo. I get panicky now after a bout with food poisoning. Shipping is always an option. If you are in midtown there is a FedEx on 48th and a USPS in Rockefeller Center. Good luck!

What iconic foods/brands have you not tried?

I've never had a Twinkie. Never ever ever. Luvs me the Ho Ho's, especially frozen, but for some reason.. never a Twinkie has crossed these lips. I poke them in the stores, tho, and am quite fascinated by the squish level.

Now - for Hostess pies, I'm from the W. Coast, those are tasty. But if you really really want to try a fried/"baked" pie, ya gotta go for the Hubigs from NOLA. They have sweet potato! Yum.

From Talk

What cooking skill have you recently acquired?

I learned out to butterfly a chicken breast, stuff, tie up juust enough to hold the filling in, then coat on one side only with a topping that you crisp first, then flip and finish. Reading about it was scary as hell, seemed like a ton of steps, but it was actually easy and kind of fun. I'm going to try on boneless chops next!

From Talk

Do you cook for your pets?

My dog, 5lbs on a good day, will literally eat everything.. raw or cooked. Bananas, oranges, cherries, celery, raw/cook squash, beets, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, rice, any protein, radish, etc. Her breakfast today: banana, cheese, raw sweet potato, some organic kibble. Dinner will be similar but with a bit of brown rice cooked in stock, no butter, and some cooked chicken and raw squash. No table scraps ever, tho, all her food is prepared just for her. I worry about oils and salt and things.. try to keep it clean for her wee bod.

She sits on me at night when I'm eating an orange - a full slice for me, a small bit for her and so on. Weird but cute.

Once a week......something new.

I love doing this! I buy a small new treat each week - a food item, booze, or a cooking implement, then once a month I check out a new restaurant... not my usual "go to's." Makes grocery shopping or wandering around much more of an adventure.
