Cookbook Giveaway: 'Super Natural Cooking'

Peanut butter. About 5 days of the week for lunch, I have what I call a peanut butter quesadilla. It's peanut butter and sliced apple on a whole wheat tortilla. It's not only healthy and pleasurable, but also filling.

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

Tortillas- Corn tortillas. Also scones. But they're most impressed with the tortillas. I guess because it involves a gadget--a tortilla press--that most "regular" people don't own.

Chic Peas. I use them in soups and stews, pasta dishes (pasta ceci, pasta fagioli) and salads. Marinated with jarred roasted peppers and artichokes, they make a great and quick addition to an antipasto. I use them to make hummus-type dips and spreads for crostini. Drained and dried, with a sprinkling of cumin and smoked paprika, they can be roasted for a tasty and crunchy cocktail nibble. They work in Italian recipes, of course, but also in Greek and Middle Eastern. Just last week, I added them to a lamb tagine. They’re the best!

I had a great time at this event yesterday. Since a picture's worth a thousand words, here's I'll just drop 45 grand on you:

I have a friend who ate there with me when Salvatore was still there, then he went back a year ago and didn't like it. About a week ago and he called me from the place and said that it was as good as the first time. I went about a month ago and was dissatisfied. Perhaps it's just a consistancy issue. Giving them both a go sounds like an excellent idea.

Enjoy.

Interesting. I haven't been at 28 in 6 months, and the last pie I had was good, better than my outing at Una. Who knows, I'll probably end up giving both of them another go to re-evaulate things.

I was a 28 fan for a while, but since Salvatore and his brother Luigi left the pie has gone downhill.. I've since treied Una's Margherita and liked it very much. I wish he offered it with a choice of bufala or my preference, fior di latte. Perhaps on 10/11 he'll make the option available.

Would be cool to meet you guys, but I'm out of town.

Honestly, I wasn't happy at Una. The margharita didn't really taste- top of the line ingredients or not. It's weird, but I've got to say that whatever I could get at Una, I could probably get better at No.28.

I feel like I need to give the place a second chance, though. I need to go with a friend, order two pies, not margaritas, and try to figure this out. Perhaps I like the American style pizza. I could be happy at Patsy's or Sal and Carmine's.

Actually love this pizza...Finally someone got it right...Try the margarita slice..It is soo good...Not to much sauce, it's not soggy and it's thin...Also had a chicken role and it was fresh , not like most places where it has been sitting all day...

@pjacob01: Welcome to Sliceworld!

We've never really done a "review review" on Koronet, but we have mentioned it a few times on Slice:

http://slice.seriouseats.com/tags/koronet

That's the page with everything we have that's tagged "Koronet."

But you're right. It would be worth doing a more in-depth investigation ...

Hi Adam...I'm new to the Slice world and I didn't know how to 'post' this question to the Slice guru's. My question is - have you guys ever done a piece (sorry - no pun intended) on the following Pizza place...

http://estancia460.wordpress.com/2007/10/28/koronet-pizza/

The link is to a blog by Stacy Sosa, the owner of the restaurant Estancia 460 over in Tribeca - she gives it a pretty good thumbs up...but wondering what 'real' pizza gourmands think...?? All comments welcome....~thanks..

I'm coming up from DC for this. I've been to Una and enjoyed it but not sure it's twice as good (as priced) as others. But I love a good pie and think this will be fun. See you there.

@JanRan: Hahahah. Oddly enough, no. I think it's a reference to the fact that they have other things on offer, like burgers and such. Not usually a good sign, but the pizza seemed to be ok. Had a pie delivered and generally liked it.

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

People always seem surprised by the things I make; lecithin spray, cheese whiz that I can use as a dog training inducement when they get sick of peanut butter, dog food, Frosty Paws, dog biscuits, yogurt, ice cream, fakin' bacon, instant cappacino mix, bagels, pita, crackers, Greek pitas, pretzels, spankopita, spring rolls, tortillas, salad dressings, marinades, speasoning mixes, popsicles, and baking mixes - don't get me started on the mixes!

I'll try to make anything we like to eat at least once!

From Talk

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

The standards - pasta, sauces, etc.

The funniest one I got was pita chips. "You make your own pita chips?" I thought that my friend thought I made the pita bread and then the chips, but no, this friend has no idea how to cook that he thought that making pita chips out of pita bread was some huge process. Ha ha!

From Talk

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

Most of my friends are no longer surprised at anything I might make -- being a culinary student cuts back on that sort of reaction -- but I have gotten "Why would you make that?" reactions for making mayonnaise, alfredo sauce, sausage, Thai curry paste, pasta, and watermelon roses.

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

My fiance and his friends are impressed by my chicken parmesan, chicken enchiladas, and burgers. Mostly because I've been a vegetarian for 10 years!

I love a mix of fresh berries with Greek yogurt. My favorites are usually blackberries and blueberries from the local farmers' market.

The most important thing--always--is the company I keep, even if it's just myself. Sharing a little paper sack full of hot salty fries at a fast food joint in the Tenderloin with my best friend who is in serious need of some girl talk is way more wholesome than any multi-grain, fat-free, non-whatever eaten in distress. That being said, a ripe red tomato, just picked and still warm from the garden, sprinkled with a little salt and eaten like an apple over the sink is heaven on earth. Oh, and it doesn't hurt to have a little Devendra Banhart on the stereo and my honey walking through the front door. Yum.

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

Soy sauce chicken (or duck, gizzards, etc)

Most folks go out to Chinatown to buy soy-sauce chicken but I make it at home. We have a vat of homemade sauce that's been unchanged for 4 years. The batch before stayed with us even longer but we had to dump it since we were moving.

I definitely have a sweet tooth, so when I reach to satisfy it, but keep my health in mind, I'll do one of two things: A big bowl of berries with some Splenda and cinnamon sprinkled on top OR a bowl of sugar snap peas raw or steamed. Mmmm...and the natural sugar is so much kinder on my tummy!

From Talk

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

I have to agree with Christopher Balla, since I'm in college most people are shocked at anything home-made.

A big bowl of steamed green beans. Or raw sugar snap peas. I can never buy enough!

My morning smoothie/shake, soy milk and any and all fruits I want. I can change it any time I want, and make it fancy or simple. AAAnd there's no guilt, ever!!

From Talk

Question of the Day: What surprises your friends most to hear that you make yourself?

An eclectic mix - yogurt, wine, granola, marshmallows and angel food cake have all gotten surprise reactions.
