Snapshots from London: Good Eats At Borough Market

Favorite parts of Borough Market from when I went EVERY weekend during my 4 month back and forth business trips a few years back:

Stand selling freshly sliced comte cheese, (first introduced to comte there and all others I've found here pale in comparison), falafel stand across from awesome raclette stand, freshly shucked oysters, more varieties of olives in a single stand than I've seen in almost all of Manhattan, meat pies from the butchers, baguettes...

I could go on and on. I must get myself back there soon! :)

Video: How to Make Homemade Halloween Candy on 'Working Class Foodies'

Definitely making the brittle for our Christmas baskets this year with a dash of peppermint extract mixed in w/ the chocolate. Thanks for the instructional video!

Anybody else notice that the cost for each candy apple that came up on the screen was calculated as $8 for 6 apples versus the correct $6 for 8 apples?

Totally Unnecessary But Awesome Gadget: The Automatic Butter Spreader

I saw this being used at a Burger King at a rest stop off the Jersey Turnpike recently while picking up coffee. I too thought it was ingenious but agree with travpard (unless you're the Duggards).

Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'

PW is one of my faves for getting inspiration in the kitchen. TGWAE is one of my faves for finding places to eat :)

Dinner Tonight: Baked Ziti

I've heard (via Alton Brown perhaps?) that the farther along a canned tomato goes from whole, the more processing it goes through which will degrade its quality. Makes sense to me since diced tomatoes from a can often seem waterlogged and tasteless (IMHO).

I always buy whole canned tomatoes and "process" them myself.

Serious Eats Is Bringing Hot Doug's to NYC October 7

Just snagged a ticket to check this out. $65 is not a bad deal :o)

The seating times are at 6:30 and 8:30 though. Might want to update that in the post.

Sugar Rush: Green Apple

That looks more like ice cream to me than gelato. Was the actual consistency less so? It looks a little icy...

Always open to a good pistachio sorbet place though. I've found none in NYC that rival those in Italy though unfortunately. Ahh to go back :o)

Best Banh Mi in NYC

I agree with @sailordave that Saigon's on Broome makes the best banh mi. I always get a #1 with fresh jalapeno and chili sauce. I've tried other places (including Nicky's and Baoguette) and think that both flavor and price is superior at Saigon.

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

I agree with hungrychristel. I would mix the meat with some cooked rice, shredded cheese, and hot sauce. Then stuff them into red/green bell peppers w/ the tops cut off and bake until the peppers are slightly wilted but are still tender.

Thanks!

I need a happy, healthly food project

I second canning! I've always wanted to learn and you can end up making such a variety of things. Tomato sauce, jams, pickles, etc...

No better time than the summer time to take it up, what with all the different produce out there.

I hope whatever you choose to do will make you feel better! :)

Eggs Travaganza in Midtown: The First Power Breakfast Cart Ever?

I work at 52nd and Park on the NW side and never walked by this cart before. Or else I just dismissed it as another breakfast cart selling coffee and roll-like bagels. After reading this a co-worker and I headed over. Maribel and Arturo are GREAT! So nice and put a lot of effort/pride into their food. There was a bit of a wait since he makes everything fresh. Very worth it though. Maribel said to call ahead next time so we wouldn't have to wait there but it was nice to chat w/ her.

They were very excited about their SE debut!

Lessons from Ina Garten and House Beautiful's Kitchen of the Year

This really is a beautiful kitchen. Wouldn't the stuff kept on the shelf above the gas range get very hot though? I always question the real practicality of that type of setup...

Serious Heat: Fruit Salsa: Love 'em or Hate 'em?

I love fresh fruit salsa over grilled/broiled fish. I usually use mango or pineapple as the base and add diced tomatoes, red bell pepper, red onion, jalapeno, lime juice, and cilantro.

Serious Eats...in Philadephia?

I go to Philly once in a while since I'm opening up a calzone shop there and on a recent trip we went to Triumph, which is in Old City.

There's some outdoor seating which is nice and the burgers were delicious.

Don't forget to check out Capogiro's for some great gelato. They just opened up a new location in University City at the new Radian building across from the UPenn dorms.

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

PJ Clarke's in Midtown is one of my faves. Pretty much any burger that is just beef, salt, and pepper, no bigger than 5 oz, medium rare inside is delicious to me.

Num Pang Sandwich Shop: What's in a Name? A Lot, As It Turns Out

My husband and I picked up sandwiches from here one night for dinner and while we thought they were a bit pricey, all three were VERY good. We had the skirt steak, meatballs, and catfish sandwiches. We actually ordered the pulled pork but got the catfish instead but were happy w/ the mixup. Our favorite was the meatball w/ the catfish a close second.

At first I thought that I'd rather just get a filling banh mi from Saigon on Broome for half the price of one sandwich from Nam Pung but to be honest, they are really different. I'm craving the meatball sandwich now! :)

Memaw's Buttermilk Biscuits

HOLY CRAP, Robyn Lee (THESE BISCUITS WERE SO GODDAMN GOOD. Every bite exploded with crispy-soft-buttery-salty awesomeness) and sshoys (Partway through cooking, I heard an odd sizzling sound coming from the oven. I opened to find the biscuits frying in their own butter and I knew I was in for a treat.) and the rest of y'all! I am going right into my kitchen and baking up a batch of these biscuits RIGHT NOW. Thanks!!!

Num Pang Sandwich Shop: What's in a Name? A Lot, As It Turns Out

Times must be touch; they're cutting back on the amount of grated carrots, cucumbers and cilantro they put on the sandwiches. I think I got 5 strips of grated carrot on the Veal Meatball Sandwich .. none of th emeatballs were sliced in half ... it looked like the guy just threw the stuff on the bread, flipped over the top half of the sandwich, stuck it in a styrofoam box and handed it to me. I was pleased with the taste of the meatballs but the sandwich I got was nothing like the one pictured above!

Snapshots from London: Good Eats At Borough Market

I'm going back to London in December, and I absolutely cannot WAIT to explore the Borough Market - I somehow managed to miss it when I was studying there for a semester in college. Shame on me.

The Spanish deli is Brindisa (awesome chorizo sandwiches) but one of the best (British) things to eat is a sausage roll from The Ginger Pig butchers. I wouldn't go to the market for the fruit and veg (I don't personally think the prices are worth it) but there are some great things to try. I particularly love the Cool Chile co and Monmouth for coffee. There are also a few places to eat outside of the market that are worth a look too.

Had my first ever raw oyster there in May - it was sublime and the Market has a gorgeous array of products. Next trip I shall visit early and stock up on some tasty things!

Snapshots from London: Good Eats At Borough Market

I spent the better part of a day there in September. It was wonderful, with an amazing variety of vendors and many, many creative, unusual dishes. I loved especially the Spanish pork sandwiches (I'm forgetting the name, there was a really long line) and the huge variety of dairy products I'm hoping New Amsterdam grows into something like this in New York.
