Bouillabaisse in NYC?

The Poached Red Snapper with Mussels, Calamari and Sauce Bouillabaisse at EMP is wonderful, as is Pearl Oyster Bar's.

I am willing to bet you're friend would never admit it either way, but try EMP!

Try Locanda Verde for bfast. The crispy garlic potatoes are awesome, as is the french toast. It is not expensive and downtown in Tribeca. Great place.

I'm young 20's/F and I agree with many of TEdwards spots.
I'll also throw in Monkey Bar, Flatiron Lounge, Spitzer's Corner, Park Bar, Spring Lounge.
Trial and error is probably the best approach since I am not unsure of the company you wish to keep! Good luck!

I love it. People with the most horribly put together sentences judging someone based on her mispronunciation. I know very little about Sandra Lee, but she does not seem to be claiming ownership or expertise regarding much. After all this vile poison spread about her, while I am sure none of you know her personally, I hope she is laughing her way to the bank.

Really missing the point

How does your kid know not to eat nuts, nut candy bars, pb etc in the first place? Do you plan to follow to the college caf and demand a nut free democracy?

Just teach the kid at home first where good parenting can guide him/her.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 1

I thought Gene Cheated.... at first.

I'm not sure why I thought this but when Gene was shopping for ingredients and he was at the counter asking what the rice dish or some grain was, I thought it was a pre-made dish and then that was the dish that Padma loved. I wasn't looking for a cheater but I really thought that's what happened and that any minute they were going to drop a Top Chef bomb on ep. 1.

Then Stefan thinks it would be great for someone other than an American to win. I think I am still recovering from the 2 year long election or something, because Stefan's comment bothered me a tad.

How nice of you to try and find something your gf will like even though it is not Balthazar (hopefully since she is your gf she understands your econ situation.)
I like Zampa wine bar on w 13th. It is small yet intimate and it def fits your criteria.
Ino in the WV is pretty similar as well. Love it there.
I think Kefi on w 79th would really impress her (I am not sure if you are sticking to downtown but I figured I'd throw it in). It is very romantic with great lighting and great food.

Hope this helps, otherwise I agree with BirdDoggie!

Foods that make you go hurl

@ChelleyD that Egg story is priceless.
I had a 4th of July filled with SoCo and Lime shots where I proceeded to have a Pastrami sandwich, and then hurl off a balcony showering my friends. Needless to say, I am not a regular at Katz's.
Last year my friend got a round of shots and without thinking I drank it without asking what it was first. The Second the soco and lime hit my lips I spit it out all over my brother and downed the first drink I could grab.

What's the best dinner anyone has ever cooked for you?

I was in the hospital for a fairly long stay 2 years ago in Paris near my university, and I was frighteningly ill. My boyfriend at the time called my mom and asked her all the meals my grandma used to make for me as a kid (my gram and I were very close and she died 2 years prior). He flew to Paris, met my parents and my friend and went to my apt to cook.
I was in and out of consciousness ut I remember waking up to Bob Seger's Night Moves (i'm a huge classic rock fan and I it is one of my faves) and the smells of gram's Fusilli and meatballs, baked macaroni, frankfurters and eggs and a slice of cheesecake. They were all tasting portions bc I was in no shape to eat, but I forced myself and it will always be the greatest meal of my life because it probably helped save me.

My mom was sobbing and my hard ass dad, I could tell, was pleased and at ease that someone could take care of his little girl if she would only let them. Mind you, my bf drank beer and te blocks of vermont cheddar cheese and kosher dill pickles, a real guy's guy, so this was...well it was something i'll never in life expect to happen again, but it was the most amazing experience that I lived to tell!

Keeping up with you deli and cheesecake desire, I would say go to Carnegie Deli on 55th and Seventh Avenue. You can have really good sandwiches and really good cheesecake - all in one place. Then, if you feel the need to go to brooklyn - give Junior's cheesecake a try. But I really love Carnegie Deli. Have a great time in NY.

Thanks again for the additional comments and after some further review I have replaced Lombardi's with Motorino, scratched King Papaya from Dinner from Sunday Dinner, and have added Minetta Tavern for Dinner on Saturday.

So pretty much Saturday is totally on lockdown so that is 1 day. Basically at this point I am looking at filling Sunday Breakfast and another dinner or lunch. I say either because I am willing to move things around based upon when it is best to hit some restaurants or depending on how early I need to get there.

For Motorino, how hard would it be to get a single spot by myself at lunch on Sunday or Monday? I am willing to move by Shake Shack meal to dinner on Sunday if it would be easier to do Motorino when I know I can get there right when they open on Sunday.

Thanks guys keep up the great work.

I second Thomas_Traveler's post... as a 40-year-old (not unattractive, employed, divorced) woman who would love to meet a guy in his 40s and hasn't a clue where to start. Where do decent single or divorced men in their 40s hang out? Is TEdward's list valid for someone like me?

jackie2830-You'll never see this, but I just got back from vacation and had to respond. I KNOW! That was my point. One's a "pancake" and one's a drink, but too many people use the drink pronounciation when referring to the pancake. But thanks for the schooling.

Reverse question: what's a good place for guys to meet interesting, cheeky, intelligent women?

I'm a guy in my 40's (single, not unattractive, employed). I want a place where I can actually hear the woman and maybe even get to know her.

When I was out west I was amazed at how easy it is to just mingle and talk with people. Here it seems harder.

Suggestions?

Espresso is easy... How about bruschetta? Check out these Top 40 Pronunciation Pet Peeves, but warning… you may cringe on a few that you mispronounce.

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

This is one of my pet peeves. I'm not going to get all high-horse because I'm Italian and whatnot, but I think if you are indulging in the another culture's food/beverage/custom, you should do your best to pronounce and partake properly. I'm not saying go learn Italian, but to completely ignore how the word is spelled and add in letters is a little silly. This is akin to my pet peeve of hearing "rih-cot-uh" cheese and "man-ih-coddy". The same goes for all ethnic cuisine--learn to pronounce and appreciate it, and I bet it'll be even more enjoyable.

From Talk

TEdward speaks the truth, and compiles a good list. Though if you are looking for the type of guy who goes to pick up girls at Employees Only I can only have sympathy on you. I like Wilfie and Nell out of the bunch.

Amen RegrettableFoodie! And the added chuckle of your "Semi-ho" acronym made my day!
I just feel with all the wares these so called chefs push [TV shows, Specials, guest spots on other TV shows, cookbooks, magazines, packaged food, pots and pans, and their own restaurants - some, more than one] they should be able to pay at least one coach who can edit/teach them the proper words involved in the vocation for which they make all that money!
To further irritate yourself, go to:

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

The only people who think that Sandra Lee brings the world anything of value have apparently not watched more than a few minutes of her show or they know nothing of cooking. Semi-ho is not a money-saving concept and her money saving show, based on imaginary grocery prices, is ridiculous and insulting.

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

I'm from Bawlmer, hon, and get my woter from the zink, the woter I use to make espresso.

(Translation: as has been said more eloquently already, dialects and localisms aside, Lee is saying it wrong. Expecially as she has no specific accent which might allow it. Not that I've really listened long enough to be sure...)

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

Why wouldn't we judge someone as lazy when they choose to mispronounce a word like espresso (assuming, of course, that at least one person at FN can pronounce it and correct the offender)? Given the whole new attitude that Food Network portrays, it wouldn't be a stretch for me to believe that Sandra Lee mispronounces it on purpose to seem more folksy.

I wouldn't judge someone as stupid for not knowing how to pronounce a word the first time they see it, but if you're corrected and you don't even TRY to correct yourself, why can't I judge you as lazy?

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

My grandfather who came from around Trieste always said "expresso;" so did all the Sicilian and Neopolitan relatives in the family my aunt married into. It was also how it was pronounced around Arthur Avenue, a few blocks from where I grew up in the Bronx in the unpretentious 50's and 60's.

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

(Threadjack in progress)
Forgive my snobbery, but I stopped watching Food Channel about 18 months ago. Whenever they replaced/second-fiddled the real pros like Mario Batali, Emeril, and Sara Moulton with those overproduced yuckfests with the soft filters, the cheesy music, and the lack of live cooking. (Of course, I do watch Good Eats; Alton talks about COOKING, and it’s not OVERproduced)

EEW: Sandra Lee, Rachel Ray (because she just annoys me), Giada de Laurentis, Ina Garten, Tyler Florence (I like the last 2 a little more than the others).

I would like to see cooking, and learn about why things work the way they do in the kitchen, not learn how to set a pretty table or entertain my guests. It seems to me that would be better suited to a different channel. Now I watch America’s Test Kitchen on PBS, and that replaces the *entire* Food Network for me.

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

I heard Ina Garten say "pie-ella" a couple of times yesterday while making a lobster paella, but it seemed as if she also tried to prounounce it the correct way a time or two as well. Hmmm. Surely they have people behind the scenes who coach them as to the correct way to pronounce non-English-derived words?

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

"Expresso" is a mispronunciation of "espresso." There's not really room for debate in the right or wrong department. However, I can certainly understand the tendancy for non-native speakers of a foreign language to mispronounce borrowed words that are phonetically unfamiliar (same with "bruschetta" or "gyro"). It doesn't make the speaker a bad person or even less intelligent. I second I_destouches -- other lanugages borrow plenty of English words that end up horribly butchered on the other end. That's just how it goes.

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

amen blankplate...

it's a borrowed word, calm down everybody. and all the 'stupid american' stuff is a bit uncalled for. there are also a lot of english words borrowed into italian, and i assure you they do not pronounce them 'correctly'. every language has borrowed words. it's how the world works. get over it.

Hey guys, with all this in-fighting, how about this one? Tyler, Paula, Guy, & Michael Chiarello all say...............MAR-SCA-PONE instead of the correct MAS-CAR-PONE. Now I could understand Sandra & Paula.........but Chiarello & Fieri [yes, for all of us Food Channel alumni, his name used to be pronounced Fieri, not Fieti]........hmmmmmmm wonder why that change???
And yes, total agreement with the masses.....it is indeed ESPRESSO!

From Talk

what is the question - it's espresso so the proper pronounciation is es-press-o
any questions?

From Talk

Expresso vs Espresso: A pro-Expresso Rant

Two comments - people who axe a question instead of ask..(AUGGHH!!)

Sandra Lee makes me ill - how she got a show and calls herself a chef when all she does is by pre-packaged stuff, add some lame ingredient(s) to it and then pass it off as something she actually prepared from scratch...PULEEASE! Get out of the kitchen Sandra. Put the spatula down and just leave. I beg you.
