Not All Breakfast Sandwiches are Created Equal

Not a sandwich, per se, but I'm a huge fan of Kitchen Market's breakfast burrito. Fluffy eggs, cheese, roasted peppers, spicy salsa and your choice of breakfast meat, all wrapped in a fresh tortilla.

Why do the French Fries at Blue Smoke suck?

I'm not really a French fry person, but I find the Shake Shack fries tolerable if doused in cheese sauce. Perhaps Blue Smoke should do the same.

I haven't lived up there for a while, but I used to enjoy Taqueria y Fonda la Mexicana at Amsterdam and 107th (where they have decent enchiladas and sometimes make a spot-on mole). And what about Pampa, the Argentine steak house? Cheap and delicious. There's also a couple of Mexican grocers on Amsterdam that have tamales on the weekends. But I miss Absolute Bagels the most. I live near Murray's, but it's not the same thing.

Egg and George is one of the reasons we moved to North Carolina (George is from NC) of course we thought we'd be getting his take on southern - organic, super fresh, and yummy. Biscuits and grits aplenty, but alas, we don't find George's impeccable taste, not in breakfast dining.

We're not thinking of moving back to WB just yet, Hich Elbetri makes magic at SandwHich (Chapel Hill, NC) taking fresh, local, organic ingredients and transforming them into a meal that's beyond what you'd normally find between two pieces of bread. Hich (formerly of Park Slope, Brooklyn) has an amazing take on sandwiches and soups, and they are like you've never had before, in NC or NYC. He's a couple blocks from Mama Dips, go here for real southern food, Fried Green Tomatoes top my list.

One of the best egg sandwiches I have found is from a truck at the Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market. Route 7, New Milford CT. They are perfectly made on a Portugese roll. If you are ever in the area on a Sunday it is well worth a try!

The Clinton St. Baking Company is one I surely missed. I'm going to go there this week.

A breakfast burrito really isn't a sandwich, but its intent is the same, so I'm going to try to get over there this week as well.

Why do the French Fries at Blue Smoke suck?

Megnut is absolutely correct. In-N-Out fries are amazing, especially when eaten out of the same box as the burgers. In your car. That glorious aroma spreads throughout the whole interior, and lingers long into the next day. Too bad they don't make a car deodorant in that scent!

Why do the French Fries at Blue Smoke suck?

Every time I've been to Blue Smoke, the fries have indeed sucked. Sure, the rest was pretty good, but they fries really stood out.

I'm glad Ed took it right to them. They need to get their act together. Plenty of dumpy joints with tiny kitchens make good to great fries. Blue Smoke is a huge place. None of their defenses for the lousy fries is believable.

Why do the French Fries at Blue Smoke suck?

I seem to recall that the first time I ate at Blue Smoke, the fries were great. Subsequent to that visit, they were not. Is my memory of the first visit unreliable or did they once use fresh potatoes?

Almost everyone I know likes the French fries at Shake Shack. I've never understood why. They suck. It's nice to know someone agrees with me. They are a poor excuse to consume ketchup, a condiment I generally avoid.

you've gotta check out Noche Mexicana at 101st and Amsterdam, some of the best mexican I've had in NYC, and beats the hell out of Taqueria y Fonda at 108th and Amsterdam.

Pisticci on Lasalle & Broadway is also not to be missed, along with Max Soha right around the corner.
