Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

Last year, I had grapes for Thanksgiving (thanks, stepmom) so anything you serve is welcome--really, just having vegetarian side dishes is enough.

My favorites, in an ideal world would be vegetarian stuffing (dressing), green beans, stuffed vegetables like autumn squash, and sweet potatoes (plain, no 'stuff' for reasons of taste, not just vegetarianism). And cranberry sauce and pie, of course.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about the protein--no one is going to keel over and die for want of protein after eating a huge plate of T-day veggie sides.

However, since this person is vegan--why not have a 'nut tray'--everyone would like that actually, and stuff like walnuts, pecans, and so forth are very seasonal, and just about everyone (except for people with allergies) likes cashews or peanuts.

Hummus for the appetizer spread is another possibility.

I am vegetarian, but for a vegan, you might want to have fruit for dessert. Actually, although I love dessert, after a meal I'm usually too full to enjoy it and would probably prefer fruit, and like to 'take home' a slice of pie or two.

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

@Luna--you were probably pulling my vegetarian leg, but by 'Turtle Pie' I meant the 'pie' version of chocolate turtles--usually some combo of nuts, chocolate, and caramel (and sometimes cookie dough) baked in a pie shell.

@everyone--I wonder why people don't try just baking apples, no sugar in a pie crust. That is the type of pie I like--I think I may try that, just baked apple, some cinnamon and nutmeg. Pumpkin as well.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I love the crust and am glad to see some 'pro-carb/crust' representing.

However, I do love some fillings--I always wonder why so much sugar and cornstarch is added to pie, though. I really like--it's kind of hard to describe--but those kind of dry apple pies with really no sugar, just fruit, and ditto a non-sugary pumpkin pie.

Oh yeah, and not to sound too healthy, but non-fruit pies are pretty gosh-darned good, like turtle pie.

What would you eat for 30 days?

Not to be a nutrition nut, but humans need a daily dose of Vitamin C. Without it, you can get scurvy. In one kind of 'funny but not funny' case, a bunch of frat guys who lived on beer and hot dogs got it even in the modern era. So those of you who are eating oatmeal or yogurt, I hope you're taking a multivitamin, eating fruit, or eating vitamin-fortified foods.

The thing with 'za is that it is a multicomponent food--tomatoes have Vitamin C, and there is calcium, protein and carbs in the 'food profile.'

I think to get enough nutrients you'd have to pick a 'dish' more than a single food like, say, grapes, or a single food group like nuts.

It's Over - What candy is left, and what will you do with it?

Was anyone surprised by what candies were popular and which ones were not? At first I gave out my little treat bags, which had one of each (3 in total), then I allowed kids to pick 3 from the leftovers in the bowl.White chocolate Halloween Kit-Kats (dyed orange) went first, even before the peanut butter pumpkins!

A Pizza-Eating Feat for the Ages

Dan, I surfed the LTH forum--hilarious link, btw--and I have to say I was surprised at three things:

1. Lots of the pizza this guy ate looked pretty bad. Does the consumption of Tombstone really count as pizza?

2. He ate his pizza with TABASCO sauce.

3. Lots of disturbing accounts of people who ate the same thing for 10+years of their lives, like one guy who said his mom ate nothing but instant coffee, hot dogs, and Life cereal for his entire teenage years. And I thought I was bad when I was a dieting chick in my 20s...

From Talk

It's Over - What candy is left, and what will you do with it?

I have about 7 mini Reeses Pumpkins left and one white chocolate mini Halloween Kit Kat.

No more mint 3 Musketeers or full-size pumpkins.

I got so many kids this year--loved it!

From Talk

Is this a novice pseudo-vegetarian problem?

I'm a vegetarian and I absolutely hate all of these hair-splitting definitions about what a vegetarian is--as long as people eat less meat, and eat ethically-raised meat when they do eat meat, I think they are making the world a better place. So even though I don't personally eat meat, Mark Bittman gets a warm swishy veggie hug and kiss from me, as do you @PoorOldMama.

You said you had creamed spinach and meat together--that is an awful lot of fat (I love fat, but just speakin' digestion) in one meal. Actually, I've gotten sick from creamed spinach before, not because it is rancid but when I eat it made by someone else, it's often made with several cups of heavy cream, sometimes parmesan cheese for good measure. If it was that, plus the meat, I can see why you might be queasy.

All-You-Can-Eat Restaurants: Great Deal, Or Bad Policy?

AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!

Goes against everything I believe in as a serious eater--quantity over quality, so many different flavors from a hodge-podge of cuisines yet nothing really well-executed, a reward system for those who eat more rather than less (more value), no ambiance, no freshness, and the best of absolutely nothing. Mediocre, processed food and lots of it--just what the world doesn't need.

I'm not going to even bring up seeing little gnats come from a salad bar when I had to eat in a cafeteria one summer, and I've heard stories about people with compulsive eating disorders/ bulimia really abusing the all you can eat policy....

Cereal with Water and Other Cereal Compulsions

Erin, isn't the title of this post a bit misleading--your friend isn't obeying a compulsion, she's just not putting milk in her cereal to save calories. Actually, she's probably leaving out the substance with calcium and protein that (provided the milk is good) is healthier than the cereal!

Why not use unsweetened almond milk, vanilla flavored (I prefer nondairy milks personally)--that has only 40 calories a cup?

My weird compulsion--I haven't eaten cereal for years! As a kid, I used to love it, but now cereal tastes like cardboard to me, except oatmeal, which I love.

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

Again, I would repeat my concerns more for you with 'liability'--but I am still shocked that kids would vandalize or litter simply because they got a treat they didn't like/couldn't eat. That is really sad.

When I was young, weirdly everyone had dire warnings about homemade treats, but many (bad!bad!bad!) houses gave out APPLES--with foil-wrapped coins stuck in them. Usually little old ladies yet somehow those were 'okay' to eat because apples were healthy. But that's really more sanitary than a cookie in a cellophane bag from someone you know. ;P

From Talk

Pizza: A cure for the blues?

I am not a big pizza person anymore, but as a kid, sometimes if we were 'good' we would have pizza parties in school. Those were the best! As a kid, color me happy with a slice of 'za, a cupcake, and a festive paper plate.

From Talk

Best Halloween Candy?

Look, I'm a runner and a vegetarian but--NO 'healthy' snacks, NO moralizing treats!

I am still making up my little bags. So far I have Hershey's peanut butter pumpkins because I know they are popular and the orange Kit-Kats. I would have loved to have gotten cookies or cakes as a kid, since I loved them more than candy, but getting them pre-bought can be expensive, especially since my trick-or-treater volume varies.

For non-candy stuff, I liked stickers and pencils.

I may be flamed, but I'm afraid kids who don't eat chocolate will not be happy with my house. I don't like pure sugary Jolly Rancher, Skittles and such. I realize some kids have issues, but I hope between all of the houses, every kid gets something. I mean, there is an argument against EVERY candy--sugary candy is worse for your teeth, spikes your blood sugar more than candy with a bit of protein and fat than pb cups, for example.

I always liked the more unusual bars as a kid like 100 Grand and Butterfinger (which was more rare then) plus anything in a Halloween wrapper. People used to also wrap the bars in white tissues, tie them and make tiny 'ghosts.'

But once again--no tiny boxes of raisins, toothbrushes, and plastic spider rings!

Junior's Cheesecake Has A Little Friend

The crust is the best part of the cheesecake, and I believe Jr's has no crust, so it's only fitting a mouse would prefer a cake that only had his favorite part!

That picture would be totally awesome for a 'caption contest'--although all I can think of is the mouse must be thinking "oh my goodness, and they say dreams can't come true. Cheese. cake. Cheese. cake."

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

i make most of the food for my entire (HUGE) family, so i know everything that went in to the meal. and funny, even though i'm a vegetarian, i don't "resent" the choice my family has made to eat meat when i feed them- cooking is what i (most of us) do for those i care about, not a chore.

From Serious Eats

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

My parents-in-law are vegetarians, so when we have Thanksgiving at their house, everything other than the turkey bird is vegetarian. They were happy to have just the sides (green bean casserole, mashed 'taters, roasted vegetables, stuffing, etc), but last year my FIL bought a Tofurky with mushroom gravy. (He thought it was okay.)

From Serious Eats

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

Used to have a great recipe for a nut loaf wrapped in pastry ala beef wellington. made an impressive centerpiece, but I've lost the recipe. I'm sure you could find a nut loaf online, and you could make the pastry with vegetable shortening.

Roasted vegetables with the traditional sides would keep me happy any day, and I'm not a vegetarian.

Great mushroom gravy in Sundays at Moosewood that totally faked me out the first time I made it, it tastes so meaty.

For years we had a pot-luck Thanksgiving, and along with the traditional stuff we had lots of interesting nontraditional dishes - potato salad, lasagna, phyllo-wrapped asparagus or asparagus with crumb topping. Being thankful for family and friends around the table for the day makes the food secondary. It's great to have wonderful food, and even better to share it with those we love.

From Serious Eats

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

As a vegetarian, my Thanksgiving meal is a starch fest (all sides -- potatoes and stuffing, I'm looking at you -- plus some sautéed mushrooms for funsies). Not that I mind :) My mother is also a vegetarian and nary a met product makes an appearance in her house.
Besides, It's all about the pie anyway isn't it.

From Serious Eats

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

Last year was my first vegan thanksgiving. I never really went for the turkey at thanksgiving when I ate meat anyway because frankly, the sides are so much better! As a vegan, you become very accustomed to NOT eating at others homes during big holidays because even if people are trying to be accomodating it is difficult to demand a vegan dish from someone (even if they are family) when they are responsible for a feast for 25 people who have different tastes. It is good to make dishes which can be veganized at the table that way people can customize based on diet.

From Serious Eats

@stphjay

I think that if you care enough to have someone over to share your Thanksgiving with them, you would care enough to be respectful of their lifestyle/diet. In general, I usually don't ask because it seems rude and nit-picky when I am in someone else's home but when it's someone notorious for "spiking food" (like my mother) or generally unknowledgeable or disrespectful, I ask.

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

I've been a vegetarian since I was 13 (I'm 31 now) and I was never much of a meat eater before that, so my family has been wise to Veggie Holiday foods for a while now: We never have meat in the stuffing and we never put it in the bird (that's more for bacteriological reasons; everyone in my family also works in the healthcare field). My grandmother sometimes makes a gravy with turkey drippings, but there's also always a meatless one (usually from roast veggies). The sweet potatoes don't have marshmallows on them, and there's always tons of other traditional and non-traditional sides, non of which contain meat. We do all the holidays and family gatherings this way and no one's ever complained about not having enough meat. -- My most-requested dish is a Kraft Stuffing Ball recipe where I substitute sautéed mushrooms, green onions and garlic, for the pork, and use vegetarian stuffing and vegetarian cranberry sauce. So good!

We like the Quorn roast better than the tofurky, but the tofurky "giblet" gravy is good if you can eat mushrooms. I make my own gravy on thanksgiving, but we do a vegie 'thanksgiving' dinner once or twice a month once the cranberries show up in the stores. No need to wait and have it once a year, it is too yummy. We like to have it a lot, including the pumpkin pie, I just make a huge batch and freeze the filling and crust in single pie increments.

Sides are enough for me. I don't remember liking turkey much before I was a vegetarian, so I don't really enjoy tofurkey. I've tried tofurkey, and it does taste similar to turkey.
