Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'
my first cookbook was actually my own personal recipe notebook, which is an old children's book ("the story of ping") -turned journal that i bought in college. i used it to write down my mom's recipes, some of the first dishes i ever learned to cook.

Cook the Book: 'L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook'
Nichols at the Chicago Farmers Markets have tons of produce. And they always offer me free samples of peas and strawberries when I pass by.
Summer reading and food: Anyone read these two or suggestions?
I love Wizenberg's A Homemade Life. Simple, touching stories with simple, tasty recipes. Her writing is very sweet and cute with a feel-good aftertaste.
I also like Reichl's memoirs, especially Comfort Me With Apples.
Favorite Chicago Foods?
Portillo's hot dogs in the 'burbs, Wiener Circle in the city. Burt's Pizza in Morton Grove. Or Lou Malnati's. And Boston's Italian beef, dipped please.

What do you collect?
i'm starting to crazy for plates and bowls. anything with a pretty print. or any print, actually.
What to do with Leftover Hard-Boiled Eggs
i eat them plain for breakfast. or add them to tuna salad -- with mustard, no mayo. or slice them up and add them to my sandwich for lunch. i might have to try that sardine and egg salad sandwich...
Farmer's Markets
i can't wait to pass by the farmer's market on my way to work and grab a baked goodie (usually a croissant) for breakfast, then come back on my lunch break for fresh berries, tomatoes, summer squash, sugar snap peas, and new veggies that i have yet to learn what to do with!
What's So Weird About That?
my dad would cook canned corned beef with onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, then serve over rice. it's still one of my favorites.
What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?
i love tj frozen food. especially the vegan pad thai with tofu. and the frozen mandarin orange chicken is awesome.
Do You Always Eat Breakfast for Breakfast?
mostly i eat eggs for breakfast because i'm obsessed with them. but not always breakfast eggs. sometimes i'll just top poached eggs over whatever i had for dinner the night before and call it breakfast. oh and i drop an egg in my ramen and eat that for breakfast about once a week, with spinach if i've got it.
In Videos: Slap Chop Infomercial Featuring Vince, the Enthusiastic Host
haha that's so funny. my boyfriend and i see the shamwow commercial all the time. the first time i thought vince was creepy. but the more i saw the commercial, the more i was intrigued by the shamwow. i kind of want one. the slap chop...not so much.
i was so intrigued by the shamwow commercial, i actually googled "vince shamwow" and found a wiki article on him. his name is vince offer! is that for real?
When do you Serious Eats?
At work. As soon as I sit down at my desk with a cup of coffee, I check out my Google Reader and SE. I'm usually one of the first people in the office, so it's very peaceful and relaxing. My favorite part of the morning. :)
Cook the Book: 'The Bon Appétit Fast Easy Fresh Cookbook'
Fried rice made with leftover rice and frozen veggies.
Any ideas for simple, healthy, make-ahead meals?
thanks for all the tips. i'm starting to get kind of black-beaned out, but the lentils are a great idea!
Photo of the Day: A True Ice Cream Sandwich
@missvenuz - yeah, i remember that episode! he thought it was weird and gave it to some random filipino lady who was nearby.
my dad grew up in the philippines and one of his favorite treats is ice cream on a bun. and i saw ice cream and bread sandwiches at an ice cream place in spain a few years back, too!
Happy Birthday to Us: Serious Eats Is 2
Happy birthday! And please let us know how the birthday FEAST goes! Because we all know the celebration will involve eating... :)
Cook the Book: 'Baked, New Frontiers in Baking'
Leche flan (which I called "yellow cake"). Still love it.
Snapshots from the UK: How the English Eat
Growing up in a Filipino household, I learned to eat with a spoon and fork (when I wasn't eating with my hands). I used the fork to guide the food to my spoon, then shovel the food in my mouth with the spoon. No knives -- we used our spoon to cut the meat since we ate a lot of stew-type meals and the meat was usually soft enough. I thought everyone ate like this, until I got older and learned that nobody else ate like this. Now I eat with a fork, unless I'm eating Filipino food. (Not because I'm ashamed or anything, just because sometimes it's easier to use one utensil rather than two.)
I didn't even think about it being a cultural thing until I was reading one of Ruth Reichl's books, when she visits an Asian country (I think it's Thailand, correct me if I'm wrong) and they're all eating like that. I read that part and thought, "AHA! It's NOT weird!"
And then I found this. Apparently a Filipino boy in Montreal got punished in school for eating this way. Unbelievable.

Look, all of us want more blog traffic, and there is no way we can read all of our collective blogs, but we should really make an effort to check out at least other 5 SE's blogs if we post our own in this thread --after all, not fair to 'shill' if you don't help others out!

So wonderful to have so many fellow writers! I actually have two blogs to share. One is my personal blog: www.thedilettantista.wordpress.com which covers, well, EVERYTHING, cooking, restaurants, movies, etc. I started it this summer when I was living in New York City for an internship, so it is especially heavy on NYC eating.
I am also a contributing writer to Carpe Durham, a food blog that focuses on eating in Durham, North Carolina. The blog was started a few years ago by Duke law students, and I am a newer writer. The blog is a great source if you live in the Triangle area!
