Great job Nick! What amazing research. I had no idea there were so many 'Whites' in North Jersey. Is someone buying White Diamond?

Thank you Nick for once again sticking up for the slider. These so-called 'sliders' are absurd.

Steingarten on Hamburgers: More Than a Mouthful
Adding any subset of "bleu cheese, chopped olives, onions or mushrooms, bbq or steak sauce, or catsup, worstershire, chipotle tabasco sauce"
to ground meat results in meatloaf, not a hamburger.
Steingarten on Hamburgers: More Than a Mouthful
Pattyplus,
If you think adding cream to the meat results in a Stroganoff flavor, surely you've noticed that adding the strongly flavored veggies and sauces you cite (bleu cheese, chopped olives, BBQ or steak sauce, or catsup-worstershire) results in meatloaf, not a burger.
Bread labeled 'whole grain' steps on the flavor of whatever is between the bread or buns. Most supermarket 'whole grain' bakery items are not truly whole grain (as opposed to those heavy German loaves) and with only slight increases in nutritional value. But pursuing nutrition over flavor leads to a land far from the the joys of hamburgerdom.
Ted's Steamed Cheeseburgers; Meriden, Connecticut
I've eaten countless Ted's burgers. I love them. I do agree with SOME of your gripes. However, the moistness of the burger is perfect if it's served when ready. It's prepared in STEAM man..it loses the fatty liquid but gets infused with H20 in the process which creates moisture. So I disagree with your opinion there. The shape of the burger is something I've always disagreed with. It does not fit the bun correctly. A simple adjustment to the shape of the "tray" that the burger is steamed with will solve this issue. It needs to be more square to fill out the surface of the bun. Besides the shape issue, the burger is fantastic. The cheese is unique and combines with the meat better than any other option. The bun may be a bit overized and "fluffy" but it does a good job containing the gooiness. You need a tougher bun than usual when dealing with melted cheese. I'd assume the shape issue has alot to do with not changing the rich history of the burger and restaurant. And that is what Ted's offers..a classic, unchanged experience. Overall, the Burger is unique, MOIST, and extremely delicious. A definite must have for burger lovers looking for something different.

Guide to Sliders in Northern New Jersey
I lived in Hackensack for 20+ years and never stopped into White Manna.
I finally went there while I was back visiting relatives and I could kick myself for all those teenage years of eating at McDonalds across the street. How could I have been so dumb?!?
Seriously Italian: A Sicilian Breakfast To Beat The Heat
Love your recipes. I was raised in an Italian family and of course we had macaroni every Sunday. But the treat was the extra meatballs, for breakfast, before they were put in the gravy. We had fried meatballs on hard rolls with butter, and of course no matter how young you were, a cup of coffee with "Lots" of milk. I have tired to carry out this tradition when my children were still living at home, and now they are still carrying it on.
Guide to Sliders in Northern New Jersey
Great job. I've been trying to visit them all and review them. I recently dropped by the White Mana and the White Diamond in Clark- which stands out because they use poppy seed rolls and lots of pickles. I was surprised at how good the Mana was.
Another MIA joint is the Short Stop in Belleville and Bloomfield. They were similar to the Mana, but not as good. The Bloomfield one is a Dunkin Donuts near the Bloomfield Ave / GSP traffic maze.
I also miss all the little flame broiler burger spots that have disappeared- The Anthony Wayne, the Red Chimney. Not sure if any of those are left in North Jersey. A newcomer is Lil Burgers in Nutley, which makes slider-size flame broiled burgers on potato rolls. Not bad, actually.

I've been eating double-doubles for so long at White Rose in Highland Park, I salivate just by hearing the name White Rose nowadays. So damn good, and I can not figure out how they do it. That taste is so yummy!
I actually never knew the other two were still open, actually. I have to check them out one of these days, but while I am closer to White Manna in Hackensack, I much rather drive to White Rose any day of the week. Then finish it off by going to Thomas Sweet for a Blend-In in New Brunswick!
Veselka Has a Burger You'll Continue to Crave the Next Day
Was excited to try this as it is on Top 10 lists. It is a far cry from belonging on any 'best of' list. Plenty of gristle and I'm still burping it up six hours later. Plenty of other good eats there -- do yourself a favor and pass on the burger.

Love the Clark White Diamond. My husband took me there when I got my first apartment in Clark after college. The burgers were orgasmic. Truly. Haven't been there in over five years. Will go back soon to try them. Can you ever go back and have things as great as their memory?!?
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
To me, pickles are a no no on hot sandwiches period!
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I've had a love affair with all condiments for a long time. It's incredible to read some people bashing one over the other. What did most of us grow up eating on a hamburger? Ketchup. McD's uses ketchup. Most people grew up with burgers from McD's, and most people like it on their fries, so what's with all this "We hate ketchup" sentiment?
Mayo does add lubrication to a burger, but taste as well in my opinion. According to Jacques Pepin, we Americans make the best commercial mayo (Hellman's). Mayo has an advantage of providing a luxurious texture that marries perfectly with ketchup or mustard. It's not greasy either. If you don't like ketchup or mayo, I'm starting to think you're not an American.
The mustard only crowd needs to back off. Mustard does not enhance meat, it tastes like mustard. If that's the dominant flavor you prefer, go for it, but don't lecture.
The no condiment group is the most puzzling to me of all. Sorry, but if you're so snobbish that ketchup, mustard, and mayo do not grace your pantry, you might need therapy. You were probably browbeaten by your parents and not allowed to play with the other kids. I'm kidding. If you love going naked all the time, that's cool too, just pass the ketchup please.
I missed the vote, but it would probably be ketchup, mayo a close second.

And why wasn't a good dose of Sweet Baby Ray's Orifinal BBQ sauce not included? It makes a burger awesome!
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
Mayo for cheeseburgers, mustard for regular hamburgers. Ketchup I reserve for meatloaf...I think the flavor is too strong for a good burger, but that is me. And yes, regional has a lot to do with the preferences. I would say I really like Miracle Whip on my cheeseburgers (being from the midwest), but that would probably stir up a storm of protests with the purists, so I won't. :)
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
How come people can't eat what they want on their food?
If there is a proper food preparation handbook with explicit guidelines on what can or can't go on a hamburger, I would love to buy it.. Heaven forbid I make a hamburger faux pas against the God's (or whomever is laughing at us.)
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
Mayo is a must! Ketchup is only if someone made your burger too dry! Leave the mustard for hot dogs!
A special sauce is great too!
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I think it is a regional thing--growing up I never understood Big Macs, or even knew people who ordered them (everyone at Quarter Pounders). Ketchup and ketchup and mustard are East Coast, while mayo seems more popular elsewhere.
With the veggie burgers I eat now, the meaty tasting ones I like ketchup and/or mustard (old habits die hard). I also eat them plain, salted, with avocado, and so forth. But mayo on anything even resembling a burger gives me the willies. Mayo is for egg salad!
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
There is no place for mayo. A little ketchup is okay but not required. I'm not much of a condiment guy. My thought is that if your basic item is so poorly prepared that you have to douse it in 3-5 other sauces, in addition to plant life, you had a pretty crappy burger to start with.
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I love mayo, and every burger I eat is slathered in it, top and bottom bun. And a small amount of hot mustard (ever had English mustard? You need to measure it out in microscopic doses, else it is a powerful nerve gas.)
I never use ketchup for anything but sloppy joes. Good fries deserve a generous amount of salt and a cup of mayo to dip in. I will accept 'special sauce' for dipping, but prefer plain mayo.
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I cannot understand this love affair with ketchup. Ketchup, to me, is only a poor substitute for fresh tomato (on burgers, that is. I love ketchup on fries). I'd much rather have sweet relish with mustard than ketchup with anything.
And ... mayo?! Mayo is for BLT's, chicken salad, and tartar sauce. Maybe that's why I like BK better than the other big American chains - I can order my Whopper with extra tomato and pickle, and no mayo.
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I think we forgot to point out that "Special Sauce" is typically a mixture of ketchup, mustard, mayo, and sometimes relish. Which is awesome!
But I really think it depends on the burger. Simply put, a fast food style burger deserves a special sauce, whereas a more restaurant style burger may not need any condiments at all.
This Week's Poll Results: Ketchup Wins as Favorite Condiment
I cannot stand mayo on anything.
I'll put everything on my burger, but not mayo.
