Dessert and Drinks

Kyotofu is perfect-- great desserts and creative cocktails too.

Where To Eat Near Times Square, NYC

How about Green Symphony on 43rd Street? Healthy-ish but tasty food (Salad bar, hot bar, smoothies, etc.) --that was my coworkers' go-to when I worked in Times Square.

Goodbye, Dumpling

Kenji, I'm so sorry to hear this. I actually said "Oh, no" aloud when I saw this article pop up in my Twitter feed. Dumpling will be fondly remembered by all SE readers and fans.

Road trip recs? I-95 from NYC to Cape Cod?

So this isn't exactly a restaurant, but you'll need a snack to tide you over in the car, right? Stop at the rest stop on I-95 in Greenwich, and in their little souvenir shop/convenience store area there will be bags of air-popped popcorn in a green-and-clear bag. It's sort of a generic store-brand type thing, prepackaged, just the plain air-popped flavor, and I cannot remember the name for the life of me, but it is the BEST air-popped popcorn I've ever had. It's so completely addictive, and since it's just popcorn and salt I have no idea what makes it so good. Whenever I'm traveling I stock up with as much as I can carry without looking like a lunatic.

(P.S., a couple of other rest stops in CT also carry it in case you miss the Greenwich one. Or in case you've eaten all of it by the time you get to the next rest stop.)

10 Things to Do with Peeps

For Peep Week 2011:
Peepsicles? (Frozen peeps on a stick, of course...)
Peeps in a mud bath? (Hot chocolate garnished with a Peep)
Sunburnt Peep in a hot tub? (White hot chocolate garnished with a chocolate Peep)
Peeparoo? (Scotcharoo made with Peeps instead of marshmallows)
Peeparito? (Burrito made with a crepe instead of a tortilla, nutella instead of refried beans, shredded coconut instead of rice, peanut m&ms instead of pico de gallo, and melted peeps instead of sour cream)

How Do You Split the Restaurant Tab with a Big Group?

My problem with the Awl's recommendations is that, if you go out to eat with the same group of people frequently, it's always the same people who end up subsidizing the others. People who have small appetites almost always order just an appetizer, time after time; people who are big drinkers almost always order several cocktails, time after time-- and it's not fair for the former group always to overpay just so the latter group doesn't have to figure out what they owe.

Unless everybody orders more or less an equal amount, figure out what you owe, toss in a few dollars more than you think you owe, and be thankful that you have decent friends.

The Food Lab: All-American Eggplant Parmesan

Mixing it up with pieces cut crosswise and lengthwise lets you make fun angry eggplant faces.

Putting two lengthwise pieces vertically in an inverted V shape lets you make eggpants.

I disagree. It's not hard to get excited about a big pile of french fries. French fries are one of the easiest things to get excited about.

Print Restaurant: Serious Food Among the Car Dealerships?

Ed,

I also really want to like Print-- my experiences there have been really friendly and enjoyable so far, for the most part, despite some new-restaurant unnevenness. However, riddle me this: Print charges $7 for tea. How can a restaurant justify charging SEVEN DOLLARS for a cup of tea? That's the most expensive tea I've encountered in the city.

Gnu bars are the best, particularly the Cinnamon Raisin flavor. Tons of fiber, not too many calories, and they taste like an oatmeal raisin cookie!
