Exotic Eggs Available at Whole Foods

Here in Hong Kong you can readily buy both quail and duck eggs for fractionally more than chicken eggs. Duck eggs are quite rich and make lovely omelets, while quail eggs are amazing hard boiled - so cute, and with a very delicate taste. They are perfect in various appetisers, as well as deviled.

What to wrap in bacon?

Wrap a small bunch of enoki mushrooms in a half slice of bacon. Enokis are the white, delicate, long and skinny Japanese mushrooms. This is delicious.

What do you put in your oatmeal?

Make it with half milk, half water. Add just a small amount of light brown sugar, pinch of salt, Mexican vanilla - or a few drops orange oil - lots of cinnamon, dried cranberries and chopped walnuts. De-lish.

Dinner Tonight: Minced Chicken in Lettuce Cups

I've had the original dish here in Hong Kong on numerous occasions - it is delicious - they call it minced pigeon in lettuce cups. I admit I was sceptical, but the first bite proved to be a relevation... mmmm.

Mark Bittman's Savory Oatmeal with Scallions and Soy Sauce

Here in Hong Kong congee is a local favorite - so much so that you really must be careful when you buy oatmeal at the supermarket... you see, Quaker Oats offers two special savory flavors of instant oatmeal packs here - Chicken & Mushroom and... Anchovy!! No kidding.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

Actually love them... and, as Vincci said earlier, here in Hong Kong they are currently also selling ebi burgers - made from shrimps. I've tried one - pretty tasty, like fried shrimp, actually. HK McD's is currently going a bit fish crazy, actually. They have always sold fish sandwiches here for breakfast (a big seller), but recently they have introduced a special big fish breakfast, with scrambled eggs, english muffin and several fish fingers!! You won't be seeing that in the US!

Snapshots from Asia: Why Are Italian Noodles So Much Pricier than Chinese Ones?

I'm an American and I've lived in Hong Kong nearly 10 years. I discovered these fresh Chinese egg noodles very early on in my wanderings around the markets in town. They are unbelievably cheap, and I have bought many varieties over time to experiment with them. While I have certainly used them to make various Asian noodle recipes, I have found them to be wonderful in Western-style pasta recipes as well. There are two types I especially like using like fresh pasta - a very thin flat noodle similar to, but a bit more delicate than fettucini - and a fine round, long noodle between spaghetti and cappelini. The flat noodles are delicious with a simple fresh tomato and garlic sauce. If you see them in your markets, give them a try.

I just found this Blog. Great ideas. I would skip the meats, bacon, regular sour cream, etc. since I am trying to lower my cholesterol. Thanks.

Oh my goodness. All I can say is...I can't believe I never thought of making oatmeal savory! I mean, I like it with fruit and such, but...I also know that it's good with even just a little butter. My brain never got past the "put more than butter on it" line. I can't wait to try some of the ideas you all have thrown out there. And I'm going to search for more savory recipes with oatmeal!!!

My brother makes something similar to this (except he adds fish sauce) and swears it tastes arroz caldo, a Filipino soup.

I prepared oatmeal as directed (maybe a bit more salt) and served with tomato and avocado. A dash of hot sauce makde it super yum. Savory oatmeal has made me a happy girl.

What do you put in your oatmeal?

Sweet: My favorite is banana cooked in with the oatmeal, then add a spoonful each of jam and peanut butter. It's PBJ oatmeal.
Savory: Top oatmeal with salsa, hot sauce, egg over-medium and season salt. Sometimes avocado too.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

cheap and delicious - it's a classic. during the mad-cow scare, this was the only sandwich my gf allowed me to eat from the mcd's and i learned to love it. and believe me people, you should worry more about where they get their dairy and poultry than worry about the fish. lastly, i love the tartar sauce overload, once i take it out of the box, i smear half of it on my box and use it as dipping sauce for my golden delicious potato stix. =)

dbcurrie - tell me about it, sounds like the first time I got stuck behind a tractor on my way home from work, or the traffic jam on the highway the first day they put the lambs out to pasture in the spring. My favorite is the farmers that drive their tractors to the store for more beer because they're too drunk to drive a car!

Exotic Eggs Available at Whole Foods

I just recently purcased an emu egg at the reading terminal market in Philadelphia for $8. It came from a farm in NJ. It yeilded 2 cups of liquid. I made one small omlet. I didn't add milk to the omlet and it was still light and fluffy and had a very creamy taste. the remainder of the egg I made into a quiesh.

When I was little, I used to LOVE quail eggs. I thought they were so cute! Seriously though, get them from a chinese supermarket. They come in cartons of 18 (or 24?) If you just want to try them, its worth it. They dont taste particularly different. Although, they yolk is proportionally larger, so beware, you yolk-haters.
