Spinach: Way or No Way?
It isn't a good day, unless it has spinach in it!! I have spinach probably 360 days a year in one form or another!
Any *former* vegetarians here?
My wife and I were fairly strict veggie's for about 15 years, then about 7 years ago we had an older dog that was having some digestive issues and needing to start eating chicken for protein. The dry food was just too much for her. After about 3 months of preparing her chicken each week, I decided to have some occasionally, and as more time progressed, I had it a bit more regularly. More time passed and my wife and daughter also started. We now have chicken about 1 time a week. My wife could probably go back (except for BBQ) to never having any, but I like it occasionally.
Parkersburg, West Virginia... Where to eat?
Just don't go, you will be happier....sorry very bad experiences

Home grown is best, though can be time consuming (we do it anyway), but Penzey's does have nearly anything you might want, and is always high quality. Down side there is expensive, we buy anyway ;) !

Good quality extra virgin olive oil
We have come to rely on Bariani Olive Oil from California. We currently purchase it on line through Taylor's Market. Great taste and consistency.
Spices
Penzey's is the place to go, they have store front's too
My favorite way to eat an egg is ____
Easy Eggs Benedict is number one!
Second is hash browns/onion/spinach sauteed together, with a couple of sunnyside up eggs on top
Grape Jelly OR Orange Marmalade OR Strawberry Jam?
D'oh, going to have to go with Raspberry preserves -- Grape is too old school, Orange marmalade is too restrictive and never liked Strawberry.. ;)
Immersion Blenders--worth it or not?
We have a 10-15 year old bottom of the line Braun ($20) and use it often. Great for pureeing soups, and single glass malts/milkshakes.
grilled cheese sandwich
Mine is a med to dark whole wheat or rye, just enough good olive oil to keep the bread from burning, but still browning up nicely. Swiss on one side, Provolone on the other. On the provolone side either dijon or hot brown mustard (depends on the day). On the mustard goes either a bit of cayenne (with the hot brown) or Penzey's Herbes de Provence (dijon). Then just before folding the sandwich together add some fresh spinach (not cooked at all). Cover for a minute or so to soften the spinach and let the cheese complete it's melt. Excellent.
What is your favorite local microbrewery?
No contest, North Idaho has the finest MicroBrew in our Laughing Dog Brewery
Best weird taste combinations?
Following the Peanut Butter sandwich theme, my favorite is PB and a good portion of French's Mustard on a medium/dark oatmeal or wheat bread, just the right combo of sweet and tart
What will you have on Christmas Morning?
My wife makes an excellent Sour Cream Kuchen. So we have some champagne and Kuchen every Christmas morning!
Websites to purchase good loose-leaf tea?
Mighty Leaf Tea is a great site, and great fresh tea. They have both loose and quality bagged, as well as accessories.
Are you like Popeye...a spinach lover?
For me it is a close tie between spinach and broccoli as favorite veggie's. We have a cafe at work and I bugged them so much about adding spinach to the grill area that they finally caved. I have spinach at least twice a day there now breakfast and lunch. Morning I have it in an egg scramble, omelet or fresh under fried eggs. Lunch is on a sandwich instead of lettuce, or in a quesadilla, or just a spinach salad. Then at home, in just about anything. A few months back when you could get spinach due to the e-coli problem, I went kinda nuts, missing it. All better now!

Thanks all, this will give us a great starting point when we get there!

sorry, for this purpose I meant to exclude Chinese, Thai, Japanese etc. Indian would be great.
What do you do with green tomatoes?
Our Family's favorite is Green Tomato Tacos!!
1 lbs Green Tomatoes,2 mild to Hot Peppers (banana peppers),1 medium onion, clove garlic, 4 T vegetable oil,2 cups of corn, 2 lbs firm frozen tofu,2 T tamari (soy sauce), 1T Worcestershire sauce,1T each Cilantro, Cumin, Chili powder, Black pepper, Parsley,
Salt to taste
In a large skillet place quartered green tomatoes (add a few tomatillos too) and barely cover with water, bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. This will leave the tomatoes soft but still relatively in tact, remove to a bowl leaving them in the water. While tomatoes are cooking, thaw the tofu, and cut into about ½ inch cubes. After taking the tomatoes out of the skillet, heat the oil in the skillet. Add the tofu to the oil, and begin to brown it. Add Tamari, Worcestershire, onion and garlic. Keep stirring and as the tofu gets cooked, add Cilantro, Parsley, and peppers, if while cooking, the skillet starts to get too dry add water from the tomatoes. Add corn, and other seasonings and heat until corn is cooked. Chop the cooked green tomatoes and add to skillet and most of the water (when you get all done the filling needs to be moist, but not dripping), leave on low heat to bring the filling to the desired moisture level (covering skillet if necessary). Fry Corn Tortillas and fold to taco shape (or use pre-formed)
Serve shell with ample amount of Green Tomato filling, topped with Lettuce and Cheese and your favorite Sauce/Salsas and Sour cream
I wish there was a ______ in my neighborhood....
Since I live in the West, I wish there was a Dunkin Donuts nearby...
What's your Favorite Food Movie?
Chocolat - How can you go wrong there. Chocolate, Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench and Alfred Molina !!!
What is your favorite (quick and easy) breakfast food?
Piece of whole wheat toast, layer of fresh spinach, fried egg occasionally a piece of cheese melted on top, 5 minutes.
Shopping for spices online
I used to use Penzey's, but got so tired of their completely crappy website and customer service. They invested zero $$ in their website or backend technology, no one at the company was computer literate, and trying to get them to enter the 21st century was a losing battle.
I've also tried the Spice House in Chicago, run by Bill Penzey's daughter and son-in-law. Gail Gand (True and Food Network) gets her spices there. Good, but not great. Don't like that they take bulk Neilson Massey (spelling?) vanilla, and pour it into smaller, no label containers. Seems kinda cheesy, to me.
Still looking for the perfect online spice house. Have tried growing my own, but if you have any semblence of a life, the time and upkeep requirements for all types of spices, fresh and dried, are impossible!
However, if you are retired, this might be an excellent home based business, as you can supplement any online selling with a farmers market booth.

Penzey's. I got a box from them a few years back and some of the jar lids weren't on all the way for their "mural of flavor" (a salt free blend) so the stuff spilled all out. Since one of the jars was meant to be a gift, I called Penzey's - they had new jars out to me in no time, with zero hassle. And, when I made the trek to their Rockville store (about a 50 mile trip each way) the sales guy gave us homemade chocolate chip cookies. I have always been completely pleased with their products and their service. For the buying in bulk question - they do offer most of their products in either a jar, or a bigger, cheaper bag.
(Not that procuring spices is any kind of problem for me: I live about 15 miles away from the McCormick company. You can tell by the smell in the air what they're packing...pepper day is always sneezy. But I still prefer to order from Penzey's.)
Shopping for spices online
My favorite, even though I have a Penzey's retail outlet fairly near me, is Savory Spice Shop (www.savoryspiceshop.com) in Colorado. They have a huge assortment of spices, including rare ones, wonderful blends, and sell from 1/2 oz to 1 lb of most of them. They grind fresh several times a week, and have wonderful support staff. Even though you particularly mention bulk buying, I love being able to get small amounts of things I haven't tried yet, so love the 1/2 oz option. Growing your own is great for tender herbs, but kind of tough for many spices.

Adriana's Caravan - she used to have a booth in NYC's Grand Central Terminal for years until Penzey's outbid her for the space. In addition to a vast variety of superior spices, she sells a number of hard to find items - oils, beans, dried mushrooms (including a great porcini powder), rices, and a good selection of hot sauces:
http://www.littleviews.com/home/newyork/adriana_caravan.cfm
It's a small, owner operated business that sells other products along with the house brand, and I always appreciated that she dispensed great cooking suggestions and advice when she had the GCT store.

I love Penzey's - a great selection of herbs/spices, and in addition to the online ordering, they send out a quarterly (?) catalog that also includes a few user recipes. They also include an extra little present in each order: lemon pepper, pizza seasoning, sandwich sprinkle etc... to say "thanks for using us!"

thespicehouse.com is my favorite.

Visit Pendery's. Great selection of dry spices and dry chilies of every ilk. I got a huge sack of their chamomile flowers to use as wedding favors. Loooove their selection of hot sauces too.
I've gotten stuff from bulkfoods.com and they are wonderful. Excellent prices and if you need large amounts, they're on it. The link above takes you directly to spices but browse the rest of the site if you have time.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Way! Hated ut as a kid...love it now in all its incarnations (especially creamed).
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Way! It's one of my BF's favorites, and it's just so tasty!
Spinach: Way or No Way?
,Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee, or spinach.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Way. Anytime, anywhere, anyway you wanna serve it. Its my second favorite veggie (zucchini is #1).
Spinach: Way or No Way?
WAY. Occasionally in high school, I would skip whatever dinner I'd made for my sister's rugrats and just have a huge bowl of cooked spinach with a little salt and some lemon juice.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Way! It has always been my favorite veggie and I can eat it in any form, and it's partly due to my fascination with Popeye like so many others. Spinach and eggs are magical together.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
I used to eat a lot of spinach, but after I found out about the oxalic acid (which inhibits your body's ability to absorb calcium), I started relying on other greens, like kale and collards. Now when I do eat cooked spinach, it seems too soft to me.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
no way. Spinach makes my teeth hurt. I used that reason as a kid and still do today. Except for me my teeth hurt when it is cooked. As anadult I can eat some raw in a salad mixed with other greens or even cooked in something like spinach artichoke dip. But plain cooked spinach, no way!
Spinach: Way or No Way?
I've always loved spinach. Mum often made spinach soup when we were little (not cream of spinach), and we ate plenty of spinach salads and stir-fries with spinach. I use it so often, and in so many things - soups, quiches, omelettes, croquettes, salads... I doubt I've ever tasted creamed spinach though, and for some reason, I'm not sure I want to. Regardless -- big YAY for me.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
@Cass--I too hate that raw-spinach feeling on one's teeth. I love the stuff in any other form, except creamed. Spinach omelettes, spinach quiche, eggs florentine, spinach pesto, just plain stir-fried spinach with olive oil and lemon, spinach enchiladas, spinach in lasagna.... Goodness, I sound like Bubba talking about shrimp. I'll stop now.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
I know this may sound gross but I even love th stuff from from the can.
WAY
Spinach: Way or No Way?
WAY! All different ways, all the time! Spinach always adds something to any meal I make whether Indian or Italian. I'll add it as a spur-of-the-moment extra --- but it always turns out delicious (to me anyways). I understand, though, why some are tired of it. However--- I must add that frozen spinach is a ridiculously good deal at the grocery store.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Way! Yum Yum Yum
And the hubby and kids concur.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
that weird feel on your teeth is caused by oxalic acid.
You can reduce oxalic acid by blanching raw spinach.
And personally, Way.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
Oh Yea - I can deal with it. Best recipe I have is a spinach fritata.
Spinach: Way or No Way?
I think I'm actually related to Popeye because spinach is probably my favorite vegetable. I LOVE it steamed or right out of the frozen chopped package. I like it fresh as a salad. The only time I don't like to eat spinach is when it's creamed, but hey - that's not the spinach's fault, it's the cream's.
