Serious Sandwiches: Tony Luke's Roast Pork Italian, Philadelphia

My girlfriend was in Philly and brought me back a pork sandwich from DiNic's. It was awesome, even after 4 hours of sitting in the car. I love her (and the sandwich).

Throwdown: Chick-fil-A vs. McDonald's Southern Style Chicken

In the morning McDonalds is serving the southern-style chicken on a biscuit. It's pretty tasty.

Why Can't You Get a Good Slice Outside New York City? 'Wired' Magazine Says It's the Water

I absolutely believe in the pizza/water theory, and it goes well beyond New York City. Ask anybody who is not from Washington DC but who happens to live there now where to get good pizza, and the likely response is blank stares or rolled eyes. Washington has bad water, and I can't tell you how many times I've bit into DC's "best" pizza, only to taste the dirty, chemical taste of the tap water.

Lettuce? Whaddya, crazy? Why? It adds nothing. Maybe some arugula (strong flavor) under the burger if you need a built-in salad, but plain old lettuce would just disappear.

But tomato in the grilled cheeses sounds good. Gotta have tomato on a cheeseburger.

I'm thinking maybe blue and swiss/Gruyère/Comté for the cheeses (one each), if not all extra-sharp cheddar. If using jalapeño cheddar (or better yet, habanero cheddar), only in one sammy, plain cheddar on the other. Otherwise the chiles will overwhelm everything else.

Bacon only if using cheddar. And not too much. Still have to taste the burger. Balance is important.

Throwdown: Chick-fil-A vs. McDonald's Southern Style Chicken

it would have to be hands down to chick fil a. take into consideration the quality of their food as well as price point, flavor and texture. i've had both. i was Extremely disappointed with mcdonalds (as always really). i'm not one for take out and fast food however knowing that chick fil a hand batters each breast, fresh (Actually Fresh!) is a winner. i worked at a mcdonalds - it makes no sense how they are comparable - to me its a sad sad copy cat. oh, PS...mcdonald's "southern style" chicken on a biscuit is also a joke.

I really hate pickles on a chicken sandwich period, no matter who makes it! I always pick them off!

From Serious Eats

Throwdown: Chick-fil-A vs. McDonald's Southern Style Chicken

Chick-Fil-A definitely has the better sandwich but McDonald's is not a bad second if you can't get to CFA! McDonald's is open later and on Sundays!

Left is front. This is designed for people breaking carcasses, so no offal is on it. Chuck is from the front, round is the back. This is the newest version as it has the new "value cuts" from chuck on it.

@lemonfair: I chuckled at your idea. It's a great one, until you drop your wallet photo album and people look at you picking it up, expecting pictures of spouses, 20-year-old faded senior prom photos of friends, and little kid pictures, and see page after page of meat cuts...and watch the crowd around you slowly move a step at a time away from you.

I agree that this is great, but I'd like to see it labeled with alternate names. Or, better yet, standardize the naming of meat bits.

You can right click on this and either "copy image" or "save image as" to a file in "Pictures" on your hard drive, then print it (do it as best photo on good glossy paper) with whatever photo printing software you have. Voila, wallet size - though I don't know that you can read it wallet size.

You could also edit your saved photo and just print out wallet size photos of the cuts you know you want to remember when you shop.

Tonight's the night. Think I'm gonna give the spinach a try this time. I've had it that way at DiNics and like it very much. BTW, if you are ever in the area early in the day, be sure to check out their breakfast sandwiches. I like to add sharp to my Broccoli Rabe and Egg:

Love the idea -

Much to the shargin of my wife I am going to try this idea out tonight. The biggest challenge to me is to ensure proper timing so that everything is at the proper heat to ensure that the butter, cheese and beef blend together properly and not congeal.

Cheers!

Adam- nice seeing you at the Hot Dog Hootenanny. Never been to the real Tony Luke's but before morphing into Shorty's (uphill on the decor, downhill on the food), the roast pork Italian at the Tony Luke's "outpost" on 9th avenue was at one point my favorite sandwich in the NYC.

Gotta love it! I will try it soon using the thin bread squashed down. Here's one that everyone already knows, but as long as we are trying for the ultimate heart attack:

@Adam Congratulations on finally making it there. Now ya gotta hity DiNic's. My message is short and sweet. Anyone who knows me knows that with me it's all about the pizza. However, check out my "Last Meal on Earth" comment on my profile.

when I saw your article on Tony Lukes, I got all excited like I won the sweepstakes! My husband was just talking about this place and the killer sandwiches (his favorite is also the roast pork) -it's gonna be one of the first foods he eats when he comes home from his stint in the Navy....We're taking a weekend trek from NY to Pa. just for some sandwiches!! (the pepperoni cheesesteak is another good bet too) ..YUM!

Looks nice, but I'd still rather have a cheesy combo Italian Beef, with peppers, dipped, from virtually any place in Chicago. It's hard when you're 4000 miles and an ocean away.

From Serious Eats

Not worth it if you have other alternatives available, maybe. But from 600 or so miles away, I'd sure give $10 for it right now....

@SoundBitesNYC, I too can concur that the "roast pork special" at Shorty's is perfectly fine. It's just smaller than the Roast Pork Italian....and ten bucks. Good sandwich but not worth it, IMO.

@Adam: Yall are making me hongry. I haven't had one of those in a while. I like to hook mine up with some hot peppers. Guess I'm going to Philly sometime real soon.

You guys have to try the roasted peppers at least once on your roast pork from Dinic's. Slightly spicy and soo good. What is Tony Luke's favorite pizza place on the Jersey side???
