Are CSAs Cost Effective for Your Family?

It's really only cost effective for me because I volunteer at the farm. Depending on the number of hours I volunteer, I receive either a half or full box each week during the season. If the CSAs you're interested in have websites, check them out to see if they offer the same deal - I found out mine was looking for volunteers by happenstance.

World Spice Market Spices

The $9 shipping is pretty standard on their orders, but I've found if I'm ordering just the spices (no jars) I can load up a sizable order for that shipping fee - and I still come out far ahead on price. My last order included the minimum of Turkish bay leaves and I had to farm them out to friends there were so many. Love this shop - quality product and a bill sent with the order. Who does that in this day and age? Looks like you received an interesting assortment - enjoy experimenting!

As Seen on TV: Way or No Way?

I didn't buy it from TV, but the Magic Bullet is the best gimmicky kitchen item I've ever bought. It gets daily use in the summer for smoothie breakfasts-to-go, just slap the solid lid on the mixing cup and I'm off.

@chisai: The $15 Rival rice cooker I bought at Target last year is going strong weekly with both white and brown rice. It took a little fiddling with water/rice ratios to turn out perfect rice every time, but once I had it down it hasn't disappointed me.

Vegitarian-ism EPIC FAIL

I have nothing to offer in making that tricky U-turn, as on Christmas day I fell off my years-long vegetarian wagon face first into a ham. That I have a sheet of bacon in the oven as I write this would indicate that I not only fell off the wagon but got run over by meat bus trailing it. C'est la guerre.

Yes, there are a lot of good souls who are afraid of their kitchens. For those folks, two words: Mark Bittman. I've been cooking for about 40 years, taught by a mother who adored Julia Child and that crowd - but I learn something new from him almost every day.

And here's an idea! If you don't like her -- DON'T WATCH HER. No brainer. But then many of you seem to be no brainers.

I forgot to mention the wonderfully witty Lady Agnes Jekyll's 'Kitchen Essays'. She was a great society hostess who wrote food articles for The Times around the turn of the last century. I found a couple of audio readings here:

I'm do apologize for bumping up an old topic, I just wanted to extend a heartfelt thanks. This thread inspired me to hit Barnes and Noble and Half Price Books to seek out food related books that weren't just packed with informative recipes, but wisdom and wit as well.

What I found was a goldmine: How to Cook a Wolf, The Man Who Ate Everything, Tender at the Bone, Clementine in the Kitchen, and The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating.

I'm now on cloud 9 as I giddily face the decision of where to start. A big thanks to Serious Eats and the SE community!

So, the Food Networkand publishers should only cater to self important Food snobs rather than teach people to overcome their fear of cooking in Baby steps? Granted this was the cooking I did as a latch key kid at 6 years old, but it was a first step to learning real skills.

Maybe this is just all jealousy as she will make tall dollars off her sponsors while the rest of you can only complain how she is dumbing down your 24/ 7 viewing of the Food Channel. Or even worse,maybe this is actually better tasting than some of the swill that passes for High cuisine on some of the other shows. The really sad thing is that so many are whining about specific content of the show, turn the friggin tube off and really do something constuctive, don't sit there and watch it.

This is way obvious and you probably already do it-- pickles? My great aunt in Hungary makes the BEST ones on the planet. She also makes her own sauerkraut. Can't blame you for not wanting to do you own.

@jason, the more you make meals like that, the easier it gets. I may go a little over the top with some of what I make, but the more I stick to single-ingredient items at the store, the happier I am.

A while back, I was at the grocery store and picked up a package of ground beef, and there was an ingredient list that included "flavor." I'm sorry, but I just wanted beef, ground. I don't want to pick up a package and see 3 or 4 things that aren't beef.

Beef from the local butcher shop, where they take a hunk of meat and they grind it, is a completely different color from what's sold at the grocery store. If I don't have the time to grind my own, that's where I buy. And it doesn't have an ingredient list.

Great list; I too love Reichl, Child, Trillin, Liebling, Pollan, Steingarten, Bourdain, Julie & Julia, Colwin, Fisher, Slater...I'm excited to check out the ones I haven't heard before.

Here are a few that haven't yet been mentioned:
Best Food Writing series is wonderful, check them out. Another great essay collection is Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant.

Also, if you're a JC lover, Laura Shapiro's biography of Julia Child and Backstage with Julia were interesting.

Molly O'Neill's American Food Writing: An Anthology with Classic Recipes - very good.

Food blogger love -- Gluten-Free Girl, The Amateur Gourmet, Chocolate & Zucchini, Orangette's A Homemade Life comes out in March!

d.b. - I like your thinking. I've started to make more and more at home - same reason, I like to know what's in it, and just out of curiosity. I'm cooking for the family this weekend for a birthday, so we're doing hamburgers. I'm grinding the beef, making the ketchup, baking the buns, as much as I can. I try to make a meal like that, with plenty of leftovers, once every couple of weeks.

MFK Fisher a hundred times over.

Also Laurie Colwin (what a loss), and almost all the others. Mr. Meatloaf is a big AJ Liebling fan. Slater is an excellent writer, and I liked reading Nigella long before I saw her photo or heard her voice. I've had the pleasure of Danny Meyer, Bud Trillin and Tony Bourdain in person, so I admit to some prejudice on them. Steingarten's character I can't comment on, but I do appreciate his work, especially his discussion on learning to eat things one dislikes, which I think some people can gain from.

And so many more. I think I learned to eat from books before I sat at an adventurous table.

Wow, what an incredible list! I'm sad to say that I've never even heard of most of these tomes. I am bookmarking this page so I have a handy list of books to read/pick up.

Kitchen Confidential, Cook's Tour, and James Beard's Delights and Prejudices are my humble favorites.

I may catch some flack for this, but, I'm Just Here for the Food opened my eyes to a few things, as I am more of a visual learner.

I've heard Steingarten's book is an excellent read. Shame, since I think he's a bit of an ass lol.

I actually had a co-worker tell me how much she likes her (I thought my head was going to explode on the spot). Seriously, Sandy a magazine? "Toast" by Nigel Slater is a wonderful picture of childhood and growing up in 1960s England told through food memories. I don't know if he's known in the US but he's a very popular food writer in UK.
