'The Un-Constipated Gourmet: Secrets to a Moveable Feast'

If people in this country ate more home cooked food and drank sufficient amounts of water, as opposed to processed garbage, TGIFriday's Wings and Ribs, Outback Bloomin Onions and 64 oz sodas, maybe they wouldn't have to be reading about a diet to make them poop. Oh, yeah...getting up and walking around 'moves' things too - but not many people like to do that either...

San Antonio Restaurant Recommendations?

I used to live in San Antonio - County Line is not TX Bar-b-que. They don't even smoke their own meat at the downtown location. I do not remember truly amazing bar-b-que in San Antonio, except for my dad's... Black's in Lockhart, TX was pretty good if I remember. Rudy's would do in a pinch, I guess, but its not that great. Tom's Ribs is a chain - I would pass on that. Stick to the Mexican food. Mi Tierra is good and I also highly recommend Jacala - long time Tex-Mex family-owned restaurant - good food, good prices.

How to Drink Wine When Flying Solo on Business Travel

Used to travel a lot, and always tried to hit the local spots if possible. I did research on ChowHound.com, and others, and totally avoided the hotel bar/restaurant, and chains (yes, I consider McCormick and Shmucks a chain). Why would you want to go somewhere different, and eat at the same place you have in your town..? I never understood this about Americans and their love of chain restaurants...

Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us, Part 4: Bacon, Doughnut, Egg Burger

New York Times had Donut Pudding printed a few weeks ago. Made it twice and pased it around to friends. Made more raspberry jelly for the second batch and doubled the # of donuts for a really large pan. If you decide to make some kind of donut thing, don't use Dunkin Donuts. They don't have enough jelly in them unless you are driving and eating a donut with the other hand. You can order big ones from the Stop & Shop. Frozen dough, sure but they hold a lot of jelly and when you add cream, eggs and sugar. Yum.

Does Activia Yogurt Offer Any Health Benefits?

I've made a yogurt drink for breakfast five days a week for 30+ years (nonfat plain blended with fruit juice & fresh fruit such as OJ, banana & cinnamon). No digestive problems. As a woman in her mid 60s, there's a great side benefit...no loss of bone mass with age. I looked at Activia and realized the high sugar content would add 26,000 calories to my diet which translates to 7+ pounds with no added benefit. And it costs more than other yogurts. I believe yogurt is a beneficial dietary food for most anyone not lactose intolerant. Whether the Activia additive makes a difference, only you can decide.

'The Un-Constipated Gourmet: Secrets to a Moveable Feast'

I have to agree that it's a yucky title... And to redfish who said if tastes like tree bark eat as much as you can of it, thats hilarious because it can be soooo true! Fiber isn't always tastey, not that it can't be. It just really takes some personal research of fiberous foods you are willing and wanting to eat. I purchased a diatary book that is geared more toward calorie counters, but shows the compltete stats of many, many foods to find out what I could be eating to increase my fiber intake and just eat healthier in general. And, it really doesn't matter what you're stuffing down your gullet if you're not drinking enought water!

If anyone finds out where the 3 are, please post it. It was not clear to me that all would have the same name. The "15th Avenue" is over on Capitol Hill, yes? But there wasn't other info.

I live in SEattle. Until recently I drank at Starbucks as I like their coffee. However, since the one shop nearest me (which isn't very near) is 2 blocks from a Peet's, I'll go there. Otherwise, it's the one in the grocery store. I have a choice of at LEAST seven independent coffee places within something like a half mile, I'll survive. I do NOT like manipulation. I do NOT like fakery. This reminds me of those damn cigarettes that were marketed as if they were made by a guy in his back yard.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long this new sad idea will survive?

From Serious Eats

Is this un-branding? I live in Seattle, and I can only suspect that they are trying to fool customers into thinking that they are a cozy little independent espresso joint just like the ones in my neighborhood here in the Greenwood District.

It's ludicrous!

From Serious Eats

Seattle Starbucks Locations Shed Starbucks Logo

they may create a lot of jobs, but they aren't *good* jobs. they get a lot of good press for their policy of "full time benefits for part time work" but actually have quietly changed their policy to no longer hire anyone for over 12 hours a week, or under 34 hours, effectively eliminating the part time benefits employees.
it doesn't strike me as remotely out of corporate character for them to sneak in and try to steal back everyone who left for greener, more independent pastures.
in case you hadn't guessed, i'm a former "partner," let go for blowing the whistle on a manager who was a serial sexual harasser.
there is just nothing clean about this company, and they don't deserve a dime of your money.

From Serious Eats

From what I've heard, it seems like they are doing more than just rebranding the shop. They are actually trying to remake it with independent shop touches. Apparently, they actually blatantly sent spies into successful independent shops to take notes.

I suppose it could be a good idea if they put unique and individual thought into each different store, but I doubt they can really manage that given the number of Starbuck shops there are.

From Serious Eats

Seattle Starbucks Locations Shed Starbucks Logo

I think it's manipulative. They're pretending to be independent to fool people who would otherwise avoid their chain. I go out of my way to support local business, and I don't like being tricked.

Besides, no amount of rebranding will fix Starbucks' terribly bitter, overroasted coffee.

From Serious Eats

Seattle Starbucks Locations Shed Starbucks Logo

wow, I actually think this is quite a good idea. I mean, if there's going to be a fun coffee shop to hang out in that has community outreach and varied products, as well as good coffee, i'm there! it's very difficult for "real" mom+pop locations to survive nowadays with big chains dominating the market (and it's NOT just starbucks - dunkin donuts is a far greater curse in my opinion). far better for starbucks to try to rebrand to reach a different part of the market than not to do so if the customer wants it. it's sillier to pine for the days before large corporations than to just accept their existence and appreciate that their executives are trying to find a way to become less behemoth-like.

Does Activia Yogurt Offer Any Health Benefits?

I am a 43 year old male. i am overweight and i eat what i want when i want it. i know it is bad...I was asked by my wife to try this each morning. I have had numerous issues with not being regular and so forth. I am beginning the second week and i have to say this stuff has worked VERY well for me. I have not changed my diet in any way other than to eat one of these per day in the morning. Pain gone, constipation gone, hemmoroidal bleeding gone. I hope it continues. i will let you know if things change. i wish everyone success in feeling better.
