3 American Rye Whiskeys You Should Try

@simon, I tried that rum a few months ago, and I'd say give them some time to work out the kinks in that recipe. It wasn't very good.

Super Bowl Beer Showdown: Baltimore vs. San Francisco

Hang on, guys, you can't include breweries around Philadelphia, because that's Eagles country!

I thought it'd be a blowout because I think Russian River and Lagunitas are better than Dogfish Head. (Unless those two are part of Raiders country, but I'm pretty sure they're mostly SF fans up there.)

Super Bowl Beer Showdown: New York vs. Boston

The NEW ENGLAND Patriots regret your omission of Hill Farmstead, Maine Beer Company, Allagash, Smuttynose, and Portsmouth. The NEW YORK Giants regret your omission of...er...what's a good Jersey brewery? River Horse?

Just kidding.

Super Bowl Beer Showdown: Baltimore vs. San Francisco

I like Heavy Seas and Mikkeller, and actively disliked Anchor Steam last time I had it, but it's hard not to go with San Francisco here. If you extended the range a little further north, it's a blowout.

Next: the Patriots finally cash in for being named after a six-state region rather than a city.

Top Chef: What It's Like to Be a Diner at the Taping

Padma had a cooking show for a short time before she was on Top Chef. Considering how nervous and stumbling she was in that, it's impressive how composed she is now.

11 Eggplant Dishes We Love in NYC

The one at Legend is pretty eye-openingly tasty, I agree. I've really come to love the Turkish dish Hunkar Begendi, which is stewed lamb and tomatoes over pureed smoky eggplant.

8 Great American Porters

In terms of somewhat readily-available English-style Porters with lower ABV, Geary's London Porter comes to mind.

From Drinks

8 Great American Porters

Maui Brewing Company's Coconut Porter is kind of delicious, and a clever use of a local ingredient, even if it's a little closer to a dessert beer.

Bottom Shelf Beer: Which Is The Best Superlight Beer?

If you're looking for something under 5% that's a pale lager, I'd go German. Maybe you could find kegs of Warsteiner or Bitburger (both sell minikegs in grocery stores near me, so I'm guessing kegs are available somewhere.)

What's Your Session Beer?

@Will: pretty sure Biddy Early's closed to reopen as a family restaurant: she's leading you into a trap!

How do you buy your wine?

I read magazine reviews, make a list, then go to the very good local wine shops, discover that they have absolutely none of the bottles from the magazine, and then I buy something cheap with an interesting label. It's my own little system.

Beer Pairing: What to Drink with Honey Glazed Ham

I tend to find Aventinus "unpleasantly boozy" half the time anyway, so that sounds about right. (Don't get me wrong, there are times when it seems like just the thing, but in my experience it's hit or miss depending on my mood.)

Best Places to Eat in Kauai?

I'll second JoJo's for shave ice, but the absolute top recommendation I have is to track down a tiny little farmers market off 56 in Anahola. There's a guy there who barbecues wild boar. Absolutely the best thing I ate on Kauai. As for other fun stuff - well, there's Puka Dog near Poipu, and a mighty tasty kobe burger at Red Salt, the restaurant at the Koa Kea. And I'd stay away from the oft-recommended Hamura Saimin. It's definitely cheap, but not all that impressive.

Cereal Eats: Momofuku Milk Bar's Cereal Milk, Soft Serve, and Cornflake Cookie

I understand that the cereal person should check this stuff out, but now can we cool it with the Milk Bar coverage? That place really isn't very good. Everything they make is way, way too sweet. I remember once I was with friends who got one of their samplers of four different kinds of pie, and we ended up finishing none of them because of our diabetic comas. I get the impression that New Yorkers aren't going there very often anymore, but there's a steady stream of tourists because the Food Network constantly promotes them. Remember when Momofuku desserts were just a plate of ice cream mochi? I miss that. Sorry, I'll stop being grouchy now.

Serious Beer: American Brown Ale

To be fair, Surly and Cigar City make some of the better-regarded brown ales in the US. You could have added something like Sierra Nevada Tumbler, I guess. My personal favorite is actually Saint Botolph's Town, from Pretty Things.

Saison

I made one of these last spring, of similar strength, and I have to say it was not ready a month later. Still tasted green. Probably could have waited three months. But then, my process is probably all screwed up.

Hawaiian Restaurants?

There was a SE article about a year ago about good food at one of the new Tiki lounges. Can't recall the name. Anyone remember?

I do still want to go to that L&L. It's not like NYC is overflowing with other plate lunch options.

New Beer: Samuel Adams Black & Brew Coffee Stout

I liked the Black & Brew, and basically everything other than the Chocolate Bock, but the major upset that I never could've predicted was that Boston Lager ended up the winner for me. Hadn't had one in years.

Video: Momofuku Milk Bar's Thanksgiving Croissant

I think that looks terrible, and more like bread than a croissant. Sorry to be harsh, but I have yet to like anything I've had from that place, and not for lack of trying.
