Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us, With Cookware!

I notice that QVC no longer has any of Paula Deen's cast iron cookware available at this time. Probably for the reason mentioned. And they certainly were made in China. Her choice of a manufacturer for the cast iron was a poor one. Just like her choice for her favorite President Jimmy Carter.

Not to be too different, but would it be possible to just buy one of those better brands of frozen pizza's at the grocery store and put it on the grill?
I have one of those "Grill Grate's", and am thinking of experimenting using it to grill a pizza. Iam talking about a gas grill, with the lid down....

For size alone, Woodman's in Madison, WI is worth a visit. Biggest beer and cheese selections anywhere. To go up and down each aisle would take a couple of days.

The perfect BLT

For a quick, just plain home grown tomato sandwich using only one slice of bread, I toast one piece of white bread or Francisco International Sheepherders bread, spread lots of Best Foods/Hellmann's mayo on the bread, peel our home grown tomatoes (of which we still have plenty of here in Central California) slice them thinly then layer them completely over the mayo, sprinkle salt and pepper over the tomatoes, lean over the kitchen sink and dig in. Let the drippings drop into the sink....

The perfect BLT

Searched for the original Woolworth 5 & 10 Store BLT recipe. Closest I could find consisted of the following: Toasted white Wonder bread (which we can no longer get here in California, so I use Sarah Lee's Classic White), Best Food's Mayo (Hellmann's East of the Mississippi), thinly sliced ripe home grown tomato slices on top of the Mayo slathered on both slices of bread, crisp bacon, small piece of lettuce and if available, a thin slice of deli turkey, salt and pepper to taste, slice it diagonally, and chow down. Brings back memories of when I was a kid shopping with my mother in downtown Milwaukee. She always made it a point to treat me with one of these. Oh, a Coke completed the meal.

Grilling: Pizza

We tryed grilled pizza on the gasser this weekend. Prepared a simple dough with 3 c. flour, 1 c. water, 1 tsp. yest, salt and a couple of Tbsp. olive oil. One rising, then divided into 4 balls and refridgerated for about 6 hours. Brought to room temp before grilling.

Set grill on high one side and other off. Pressed out dough on parchment strips. Oiled top well, then flipped over onto cool side. Dragged over to hot side with tongs. Cooked up beautifully. Topped and place bakc on grill. Started on hot side until dough was done, then moved over to cool side to finishing melting cheese.

Yum Yum

Grilling: Pizza

Just had my first attempt at grilling pizza this past weekend. I went with the cookie sheet method and it worked wonderfully. I erred on the side of caution and was generous with the olive oil on both sides of the crust but had absolutely no sticking. Another advantage of the cookie sheet method is that flipping it is super easy - just pick up the sheet and dump the crust on the grill on the other side.

For the dough I used that 101 cookbooks recipe, but used about half whole wheat bread flour.

This weekend I'm going be courageous and go for grilling directly on the grate! Thanks for this post and the other helpful comments~

We have a gas grill with 3 horizontal burners. We also use an inexpensive square kiln shelf (purchased from a pottery supply company for 25% of what you'd pay for a pizza stone that's made from the same stuff). We use a lower, indirect fire and put a generous handful of corn meal under the pizza. We also tend to use pre-formed corn meal crusts for our pizzas. However, we cook/roast a huge variety of breads, meats, veggies, etc. on the grill...often using the stone to spread the heat. Especially during the summer, this helps with keeping the house cooler and the a/c bills lower.

Just read your post. Arrived in Pensacola, Florida and within two hours I went grocery shopping. Tomorrow is day two and at least one more grocery store. Just fun to check out the shelves for local goodies and things I have not tried. Scored some White Lilly flour on my trip today.

everytime i travel, the first thing i do after dropping off my luggage at the hotel is going to the nearest convenience store or supermarket and buy a bagful of local snacks and confectioneries.

i miss japan and their conbinis. very much.

I sure check out as many stores as I can when traveling, it gives you the flavor of local life. If you ever get to Helsinki, Finland, check out a Stockmann. They carry everything from clothing, toys and sporting goods. As crazy as this sounds, they have gourmet food sections and a huge liquor department. All seem to be run 100% separately, so it doesent come off as the jack of all trades-master of none like Wal-Mart or Costco. All kinds of bulk foods and TONS of cool stuff I never saw before....

Wherever I travel, even to other states, I go to grocery stores. I find it fascinating. Obviously, I buy stuff, usually local brands or local specialties.

I also go to farmers markets when I travel. i.e. in Paris, France or other states.

I like a BLTC (medium cheddar 1/8" slice) this is one sandwich I prefer with no excess not too much of any part, but I agree that tomato has to be top-notch. This doesn't sound like me must be because I'm stuffed from a breakfast sandwhich (bacon, egg, cheeze with butter and mayo on a toasted crossiant and I must have eaten an lb of bacon while cooking it!)

From Talk

The perfect BLT

First, the bacon HAS to be cooked thoroughly, since it'll be sharing real estate with tomato juice and mayo. A rubbery or stringy bit of bacon in a sandwich pretty much ruins the meal for me.

Second, the tomato has to be ripe. The mayo must be real, the lettuce must be fresh, crisp iceberg, and should not exceed 2 leaves per sandwich.

The toast has to be medium - firm enough to support juicy tomato slices, but not so hard as to scratch the roof of your mouth.

I probably don't need to say that I prefer to make my own BLT rather than order them!

oh, crabcake blt, fried green tomato blt, fakinbacon blt--nah, best ever blt, hands down is the following: any variety of my husband's home grown tomatoes, my homemade sourdough bread, his fresh homemade garlic mayo, my homegrown baby romaine, and last but not least, some of our friend Robbie's home cured slab bacon. wow. i think the love has a LOT to do with it cause i remember a phenomenal blt made by my mom back in the late '50's or very early '60's that was Pepperidge Farm white bread, some grocery store brand of bacon, Blue Plate mayo, iceberg lettuce and a backyard grown tomato... as good as or better than any madeleine, any day.

I do believe that I made the best, most perfect BLT ever...right here...http://niksnacks.blogspot.com/2008/08/whistle-stop-cafe-has-nothing-on-me.html
It was crispy, hot, cool, crisp, tangy, sweet, creamy & crunchy all in one bite. Can you believe it?

The perfect BLT

I have to add avocado and I prefer my bread, super fresh and not toasted. Also, the bacon must be center cut, preferably from Trader Joe's. A smidge of mayo, tomato and goood old iceberg and I'm good to go. Yum, that sounds good for dinner tonight.

I'm vegan so I make a BLT with pan-fried veggie "bacon" strips, crunchy lettuce, garden-fresh tomato & vegan "mayonnaise" on multigrain toast (which I bake at the the bakery where I work)!

From Talk

The sub place in town does a great BLT wrap:

-flour tortilla
-mayo
-iceberg lettuce
-tomato
-about a half pound of crispy, hot bacon

That might be dinner tonight...

I have to try the avocado idea, but my absolute favorite is this:
Hearty whole wheat or multi-grain bread
Not too crisp, thick bacon
a few big pieces of iceberg lettuce
ripe tomatoes
peanut butter
yes... you read that right. Peanut butter. The crunchier the better!
