Is $5 Too Much To Pay For a Coke?

Wow,
Some of you guys seem to be caught in a time warp. Places like IHOP and Denny's have been charging $2.25-$2.75 for a Coke or Iced Tea for a while. Here in Las Vegas, five bucks in a decent restaurant is the norm, and I have seen $10 in some upscale places. In this instance, I assume the $5 Coke was in Manhattan, and the guy who owns the restaurant has a HUGE rent bill to pay every month, probably well into the 5 digits (unlike some guy in Podunk paying a few hundred a month on Main Street, USA). As a restaurant co-owner, some folks have no idea how much food we have to sell just to keep our heads above water; and when I tell some people what the Hotel/Casinos charge for restaurant space in this city most folks do not believe me. Is the Coke worth $5? No, it isnt. Hell, I usually order tap water myself. But remember that out of that $5 costs are incurred for hundreds of things: Expensive union labor, decor, inspections and licensing, kitchen equipment costing thousands, rent, government red tape and I could go on for an hour. I think that the guy in NYC's cost of doing business is so high the price just gets forced up to the sky. Government bureaucracy has a lot to do with that (back in the 1980's I had to pay almost $20,000 for ramp and door construction work just to comply with the then-new handicap access laws. Something like that put lots of places outa business. Some of the upscale nightclubs here charge in the $75-100 range for a Coke. Yes, seventy-five to one hundred US Dollars for ONE Coke. There is no argument a bottle of cheap sugar water isnt worth $5, but sometimes you gotta look at the whole picture.....

Foods everyone seems to like but you just can't get into....

I will eat most anything, but organ meats are the one thing I just dont understand. Livers, gizzards, hearts, kidneys, intestines, all of that. I mean the liver is a FILTER, for cryin out loud. I dont think I would eat my car's oil filter. And intestines? We all know what goes thru those. I have tried most all of them and I just think the gamey, irony, livery taste is simply not very good. Who wants to eat chiken gizzards when you can eat the breast meat? Andrew Zimmern would, I guess. And I am the kinda guy who will try almost anything once. I sampled the lizard tacos in Mexico, the guinea pig in Peru, and the Reindeer in Canada. Even tried horsemeat. Just no kidneys, please!

Visiting supermarkets when traveling - doesn't everyone?

I sure check out as many stores as I can when traveling, it gives you the flavor of local life. If you ever get to Helsinki, Finland, check out a Stockmann. They carry everything from clothing, toys and sporting goods. As crazy as this sounds, they have gourmet food sections and a huge liquor department. All seem to be run 100% separately, so it doesent come off as the jack of all trades-master of none like Wal-Mart or Costco. All kinds of bulk foods and TONS of cool stuff I never saw before....

Federally Mandated %10% WHAT??? I have been in the biz 30 years and have never heard of this. If that were true, half the country would be in jail. Any links?
IMHO, the risk of upsetting/embarassing/infuriating a customer is not worth the reward of an extra 3-5-7 bucks on one tip.
Regarding the folks who don't see asking for ID as a courageous thing, let me assure you it CAN be. 98% of everyone, even the just turned-21 crowd, is OK with an ID check. The other 2% can have a reaction ranging from open hostility to violence. I have witnessed shouting matches, threats and more over a simple ID check. Some people carry the attitude "I don't have to show my damned ID to anybody, now get me a drink!" Witness how many shootings occur because someone was denied entrance to a bar or restaurant. A guy I knew fairly well was killed here in Las Vegas in the mid-1980's who worked as a host for a bar/restaurant/nightclub place and it was over an ID check. One guy in a party of about 5 did not have an ID; his friends were going in anyhow. He gets mad, goes to the car, gets his 38 and kills the host. (Interesting this chap, who turned out to be 24, had his gun handy, but not his driver's license.) The point is when you ask for ID, some people get REALLY offended.
