My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

Yeah, I had one just last week here in CA, to try and re-live those childhood memories. Blech! I think my tastebuds must have been broken as a kid. It was not what I remembered it to be.

Freaking awful. Bad logo. How does that logo say food? The comment above was correct about it looking like a cosmetics logo. It's not as bad as the Tropicana rebrand, but it's pretty freaking bad.

Wow. Just kind of disappointed in the whole season. Most of the chefs seemed mediocre at best. Stephan was clearly the best technical chef, but Carla made food that had more feeling behind it. Hosea managed to squeak through and turn out something good in the end. It didn't hurt that he had Richard backing him up, I'm sure.

The whole season was just kind of a let down. I was really longing to see some truly inspired cooking, and I never saw it. Maybe it was the editing concentrating on the reality show crap, but I never got a real feel for the food this year. I honestly don't have a good grasp of what any of the chefs were about this. Oh well... maybe next season.

One last thing, if you want a REALLY good burger in Pasadena, go to Burger Continental on Lake Blvd. and order the continental burger (hamburger with blue cheese!). It's killer!

Damon, I'm afraid that you have missed the boat at Top's. The thing that they are actually famous for is the pastrami. Be it the pastrami burger or the sandwich (with a side of fried zucchini is my personal preference), the quality of the pastrami, and the quantity of course, will put you into a state of pastrami nirvana. The pastrami is much better than The Hat or any other pastrami chain around Los Angeles. The burgers there are fine, but no better than any of the other countless Burger/Mexican/Greek fast food places around. Do yourself a favor, go back and order yourself a pastrami sandwich, fried zucchini and chocolate shake. You won't be sorry!

She makes me vomit into my mouth every time I hear her name. Anyone pushing more processed crap food on the American public should be put in the stockades and have organic food thrown at their heads.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 10: 'Monkey Ass Filled with Fried Banana'

I haven't been impressed with this season's cheftestants at all. Other than Stephan and Jaime, none of them seem like they are nearly on the level of season 2-4 cheftestants. I think that any of the top 8 from the last three seasons could blow these guys away without trying.

Fabio is fun to watch but way too inconsistent. Carla is bat-shit crazy. Hosea is a competent cook, but not a chef. Leah doesn't give a crap. Jeff didn't have the cooking chops to keep up with his brain.

I still love the show, but overall, I have been disappointed. No one has wowed me with even one of their dishes yet.

The Science of Cooking

Good article. I just love Shirley. She totally reminds me of my Mom. Both in looks and mannerisms.

I also agree with bobbob. I think it was Mario Batali that I heard say never add oil to pasta water. #1, it doesn't prevent the pasta from sticking together & #2 it coats it with oil when you take it out of the water.

You should add salt to the water however, but you need to add much more than most people think. A pinch of salt won't do squat. A couple of tablespoons in a full pot will help to season the pasta. Also, contrary to popular opinion, adding salt to the water will not increase the boiling point of the water significantly enough to really do anything. To increase the boiling point of 6 qts of water by approx 1 deg Fahrenheit, you will need to add 18 tablespoons of salt! (58 grams of salt/kilogram of water = +.5 deg C increase in boiling point.)

Desserts I don't like...

Anything with coffee flavor. Hate it! Bleech!!!! Also tiramisu. Never understood what the appeal was. Next up, cheesecake. Is it cheese or cake? The two by themselves are just fine, but that chalky yet creamy texture and the richness of them just makes me want to vomit. Finally, anything with dark chocolate. Can't stand the burnt flavor of it. Too much of a good thing I think.

Most irritating/dumbest food advertising?

Pretty much any McDonalds commercial in the last 20 years get's my vote for most annoying/disgusting. Their newest ad campaign with vapid dope fiends finding ecstasy in the most banal of food stuffs really just creeps me out.

Man Bites Dog: Serious Critic Reviews a Chain Restaurant

Yup. In-n-Out totally rocks. It's one of the benefits of living in Southern California. As far as chains go, Applebee's has got to be one of the worst. My wife and I have tried it 2 or 3 times over the years and the food is just flat out inedible. I cannot imagine what the people we see going into these places are thinking. One chain that I will admit to liking very much is Claim Jumper. I've eaten about half the menu and only had one or two items which were not outstanding.

I also ate at a Legal Seafood 7 or 8 years ago in Boston and had quite an excellent meal. Couldn't really complain about it at all. Sure, it may not be as good as Red Lobster, but then again, what is! LOL!

justpassingthrough:

It has excellent recipes and decorating ideas. There is a middle ground between Julia Child and McDonald's.
Yes, but this ain't it. Shlepping a bunch of BLAND processed food home and mixing it up almost at random is ... well, a step below McDonalds. And decorating ideas - well, I don't really want my house to look like Barbie's Dream House ca. 1975, thanks.

I cannot believe how many negative comments were entered. What a bunch of snobs.

What's wrong with stretching your brain a little bit and learning things you didn't know before that will make you LESS reliant on the packaged food industry and save you money?

So, the Food Networkand publishers should only cater to self important Food snobs rather than teach people to overcome their fear of cooking in Baby steps?
Yes, there are a lot of good souls who are afraid of their kitchens. For those folks, two words: Mark Bittman. I've been cooking for about 40 years, taught by a mother who adored Julia Child and that crowd - but I learn something new from him almost every day.

What do you put in your oatmeal?

Sweet: My favorite is banana cooked in with the oatmeal, then add a spoonful each of jam and peanut butter. It's PBJ oatmeal.
Savory: Top oatmeal with salsa, hot sauce, egg over-medium and season salt. Sometimes avocado too.

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

Definitely a fond childhood memory... not so much as an adult... Only try one if you've never had one, otherwise just keep the memory...

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

I live in Western NY. SO far I have been to 2 Mcdonald's for these Shamrock Shakes.. one location was out - meaning ran out of the shakes, and the other had it! so I had my one for the year.. They are delicious!

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

i went on a similar sojourn, and finally went DIY: http://flavorwire.com/14132/mchack-we-shamrock-ourselves

have to say, shamrock shakes are even better w/ the addition of a little creme de menthe!

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

They're not the best shakes in the world, but I still have fond childhood memories of the McDonald's Shamrock Shakes and wish I could find them too!

While we're on the subject, does anyone remember the cherry pies that McDonald's would sell to celebrate President's Day (previously called "Washington's Birthday?) Now those were delicious!

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

My high school would sell our own version's of Shamrock shakes as a fundraiser for one of the clubs. They didn't have any mint in them, but we waited al year to taste those shakes. So good!

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

FYI... I grew up on Shamrock Shakes in the great city of Chicago. To the person who thinks this is an inappropriate topic for SE'ers... you clearly have not had one. You probably don't know that an Egg McMuffin is one of the best breakfast sandwiches ever made either.

I moved from Chicago to Miami and also got nasty looks when asking for a Shamrock Shake. I thought it was a the norm come March. I then moved to NY where they don't have them either.

I'm going to give you a little tip to quench your taste buds that I discovered when I was craving one...., but it sure isn't a Shamrock Shake......

Go to your local Starbuck's and order a green tea frapaccino (no whipped cream)- have them add mint flavoring. The green tint and the mint is all you need to appreciate a Shamrock Shake if you cannot have one this St. Patrick's Day season. I know what I'm having today.

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

So last year, I dragged my Australian husband out to get a Shamrock Shake, due to the nostalgia factor for me. I thought he should experience this as a newly minted American citizen. No trouble finding them here in CA. However, the one's we got were somehow strawberry mixed with the tiniest amount of mint. I was so angry. I wrote a letter to the manager of that store and got some free Big Mac coupons. Whoo hoo. (note lack of !).

The biggest memory I have of Shamrock shakes from when I was a kid, was having green bowel movements after drinking them (no joke). I'm sure/hope they are using less toxic dyes now.

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

My local Mcdonalds outside of Toronto does not sell the Shamrock Shake either! Booooo.

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

The reason NYC proper does not sell the shake has to do with political correctness. You have to understand how NY'ers are. If McDonald's has a shake for St. Patrick's Day, then they have to have one for every other ethnic group in NYC. Sounds nuts, but it's true.

The "5 Boro" consortium of McDonald's owners vote every year not sell the shake in the NYC area. That's the real reason this shake is available in such places as Wal-Mart of Gibsonton, FL, but not on Fifth Ave NYC, home of the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

People in NY are very race/ethnic conscious, and keep scorecard of every little thing that they can call "offensive". Having a menu item for St.Patrick's Day, but not the one for the Puerto Rican Day Parade, West Indies Parade, etc........is just not how you do business in NYC in 2009.

Call me crazy, but that's the truth people.

From Serious Eats: New York

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

It's SO nice to know that others out there share my frustration with NYC and love of shamrock shakes. This is my first March in NYC and I've walked into at least 7 McDonald's asking for shamrock shakes, receiving the same blank look or aggravated head-shake each time. They act as though I'm crazy (perhaps they have a point...) but they have them all over the rest of the country! [Another reason I hate NYC.]

As gross and full of fake chemicals as they are, I love them! I look forward to them all year long, and eat as many as I can during the month of March to tide myself over the remaining 11 months. And this year I've been craving one even more because last year in March I was living overseas and they definitely don't have shamrock shakes at McDonald's anywhere in the UK (believe me, I checked).

Thank goodness I'm going home to good old Rochester, NY the weekend after this. I've already told my mom to buy some and freeze them for me just in case they run out before I get a chance to stop by every McDonald's in Monroe County.

Long live the shamrock shake!

I adore the Shamrock Shake. Where I currently live, I can't get one, but growing up in Savannah, GA I developed a strong addiction for them. I am currently working on a home recipe for the delights....I just have to finish tweaking the alcohol content......

We've always had them up here in Rochester, NY. They are a childhood classic - so minty and good (and yeah, vaguely gross too, in the way of all McD shakes). I buy *one* every year.

Spanno, did you not read the article? The whole point of the story is that the writer doesn't know what a shamrock shake is because she lives in New York City and you can not find shamrock shakes in New York City.
