What childhood food do you wish they still made?

I don't know if it's my tastebuds or if they changed the recipes..but I wish they would make Funyuns and Strawberry shortcake ice cream bars the way they used to. Funyuns used to be less salty and those bars used to have more tart ice cream and more crunchies on the outside. I don't know if they're still around..but Homeboy chips were awesome.

From Talk

Big, Bigger, Biggest. What was yours?

I make hundreds of hamburgers on a daily basis. WORD

school lunches, now and back when i went in the 60's & 70's

I'm 19 and the crap they used to give us was nearly inedible. I lived in a very ghetto, urban city in Connecticut (yea that sounds weird). I remember this one time when we got letters from the district saying that the trucks that brought that crap were infested with mice. yuck. And our lunch ladies were MEAN. If we got to loud, they would bang a bunch of plastic trays on the table to quiet us down. Haha then they would make us clean up and scrub the tables..even though it was their job to do it.

Frozen or shelf stable meals. Do good ones exist?

Amy's has great food and great customer service. and Trader Joe's is awesome..I'm just wishing that they would open one in Texas =(

From Talk

Airport Security checkpoints and food stories....

I sent some homemade cookies in my bfs suitcase from Houston to NY and they opened the container, crushed every single cookie, and closed the container. It was in a styrofoam container and the container was fine.

From Talk

When the vending machine calls, what do you choose?

yummm hot fries. I always wondered is the guy on the hot fries package the same guy in the Home Depot store? Can someone please tell me this? lol

From Talk

Who partakes in a little fast food action?

Duchess Chicken Parm has been a favorite since I was little. My family used to order a bucket of KFC and we would eat it with rice and sriracha mixed with ketchup.

Recipe/Fiction

I do recall reading a book called, "Liver Cookies" where these kids put liver pate in their cookie batter and they became a big hit..but I've never actually made them even though they included recipes for them.

From Talk

When do you refuse to eat foods that touch one another?

I don't care if my food touches..although once I experimented as a kid an tried to eat chips and chew gum at the same time...doesn't work.

From Talk

Heart-shaped food?

lol..that story is so funny!..Umm my boyfriend is notoriously late for everything, so one Valentines Day, I began slicing bananas and cutting them into little, lopsided hearts.

The Art of Making Bánh Tét

oh my goodness, I LOVE these (Cambodians make the same thing). I used to eat them cold. But the best way I like them is when you slice them and pan fry them.

From Talk

Low Carbers?

I tried a low carb diet when I was a young teenage model/pageant contestant. I ate a lot of plain lettuce and chicken. It actually did work and I got really skinny, however the bad outweighed the good (even for vain, little me). Your gas STINKS (sorry if that was TMI hahaa), you're always tired, you don't look your best (the irony..), and I had a hard time paying attention in class. Now, I stick to eating lots of protein and the carbs that I do eat are usually fiber filled.

Good Luck!

On my face, mixed with crushed aspirin...it makes a great facial and leaves your skin flawless.

Yucky foods of the past

I couldn't eat bacon when I was younger..lol. Also, Mexican food. I'm weird I actually am easing my way into Mexican food now that I live in Texas.

Ketchup Chips: The Search for Delicious

When I lived in Connecticut (Bridgeport, New Haven) ...all the corner stores and Krauzers (previously WaWas..man I loved going there as a kid) had ketchup chips.

Silly Things People Believe About Food

When you are Southeast Asian, your elders will tell you certain things about food so that you can eat the undesirable parts and they can be left with the best parts of food. For example; "If you eat the eyeball of a fish, you'll be able to see very well" or "If you eat the tail of a fish, you can swim fast!" or my personal fave "If you eat burned rice, your penis will grow!" hahaa I would ask if it pertained to me, b/c I'm a girl...but I "still should eat it" LOL I know some people who still haven't realized that elders were trying to trick them!

From Talk

What's your favorite type of apple?

Crabapples..when someone in my family discovers a tree and shamelessly steals them off other peoples property. I eat them plain or dipped in this sour/spicy dip they make..it's probably just a Southeast Asian-American thing though...

Oh, man, I thought I had blocked out my Gatorade Gum cravings!

From Talk

What childhood food do you wish they still made?

I miss bbq munchos, planters cheeseballs (there is another brand available now in a large container that are good but...) and morton raspberry filled powdered donuts. Oh, those were the days.

Pickle Juice

Pickle juice is great if you have high sugar levels due to diabetes to help lower them. Dallas Cowboys have been using it for years as an secret boost of energy rather than chocolate milk, candy, or energy bars that can bring them down due to the sugar. Athletes with diabetes use Pickle juice mixed with water for boost drinks. I it frozen on a stick.

From Talk

Pickle Juice

I poach chicken and fish in it, it also works well as a marinade for cheaper cuts of beef and pork...it tenderizes them like crazy. For the cheaper dill pickle juices, the ones with a lot of yellow color to them, I mix the juice 50/50 with water to use it or it yellows the meat. It's been a staple for my cooking for several years now.I wish they sold it without the pickles in it. BTW, it's also great for steaming veggies...

does anyone else remember "Milkshake" candy bars. Tasted like a chocolate malt. Also a Japanese hard candy in a round red tin. We used to call it umeboshi candy.

I think it was Keebler used to make these fudge sandwich cookies in a box. They were like a coco flavor with a fudge creme center. the were just called fudge sandwich cookies. Haven't been able to find them since the early nineties. The were great. Also miss the cheez balls in a can.

From Talk

I loved lemon coolers too, and also pecan sandies. I also miss rice honeys cereal - they also had a really cool cowboy bee mascot on the package and in the commercials.

From Talk

What childhood food do you wish they still made?

OK, Marathon Bars were the bomb, especially frozen. Does anyone remember a chocolate bar called Chocolite. It was alll chocolate, but had a lot of air bubbles on the inside. How about actual Gatorade Gum? I do remember the bacon chips, they were small bacon shaped crisps. Does anybody remember Doritos Sour Cream and Onion?

Pickle Juice

I drink it. We used to have a tradition in my singing group (think singing frat) where any used drink containers were thrown gently into the middle of the room (with the couches all around the perimeter). Nothing ever breaks in that rehearsal room. Usually, it was beer bottles and coke cans. One day, I threw in a pickle jar after I was done sipping. Got a lot of weird looks, but it was darn tasty.

From Talk

Pickle Juice

I said it once, and i'll say it again- popsicles! seriously...

From Talk

Pickle Juice

I don't know how it started, but my mother used to pour enough pickle juice to fill the jar lid and then drizzle it over very well done scramble eggs. I used to love it. I still can only eat my eggs scrambled BURNT/DEAD, and I still have a love for sour pickle juice on my eggs or right out of the jar :)

From Talk

Pickle Juice

msjhdyer ... Maybe next time you get a jar of pickles you could blend the pickles into liquid and add them to the juice for the pops. That way you have a use for the pickles that come with your needed juice. I don't know how well it would work though.

Banquet frozen cream pies. They used to cost about 25 cents and were really good to eat half frozen. Anybody remember those?

From Talk

What childhood food do you wish they still made?

God I loved Fizzies as a kid! Cola and Root Beer Mmmmm. Also a powdered drink mix called 'Funny Face' Goofy Grape and Freckle Face Strawberry was my fav's. I used to and still love Necco wafers (not a candy kids gravitated too). Space Dust / Pop Rocks were good esp. if you chanced the urban myth on a dare and swallowed a whole pack to see if your stomach would explode. LOL! My all time fav though in the toxic waste I ingested as a kid has to be a cereal from the late 60s called 'Kaboom' kind of like Honey Comb's but dyed with fluorescent colors and caked in sugar. When you added milk all the dye leached out into this colorfull swirl. No wonder I was able to walk on the ceiling during the first few hours of class. LOL! Great site btw!

Thanks to Martha Stewart's Living, I learned that quartered green tomatoes are perfect for pickling in left over pickle juice. Yum!

Pickle Juice

i love pickle juice, probably because I have hypothyroidism and addison's disease. But I love salty things. The pickle juice martini is like a really good dirty martini (which is usually just olive juice and either gin or vodka). I've seen little cans of pickle juice in the supermarket but have yet to try it.

You can go to fizzies.com and order any flavor you like! My favorite is cherry or grape. By the case for $12 or 15 - I can't remember. But what I miss the most are those giant Charms lollipops - I was proposed to with a handful of Charms Cherry because I was always seen with one stuck in my mouth! I was in the Army and they were at the ice cream store on base and one day an officer said I should at least take the sucker out of my mouth with I salute!

We run a Girls Softball League Concession Stand and sell the clausen pickles, but also we freeze the juice in sauce cups and the kids go NUTS over Picklecicles!!! In 3 weeks time we have gone thru over 150 picklecicles. Now if we can just get them to buy the pickles, so we can buy more juice!!! We need to figure out how to make homemade pickle juice??
