Sugar Rush: Rainbow Cookies from The Bakery on Long Island

I like the rainbow cookies at Bruce's, but they are really noticeably better in the Great Neck location. I find them to be the best, but I think this whole process is even more subjective than most.

Best Chicken Fried Steak in NYC?

I was hoping this question would garner more responses. Oh well. I did notice that Southern Hospitality offers Chicken Fried Steak on Sunday nights, but I have not tried it yet.

I love Cream Cheese & Jelly. Still eat it today. If it is weird, so be it.

Finally had Glasers' black & whites and I have to say they are better than Greenbergs. I have a new number one. The search continues.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

I love bacon pizza. I have always wondered why it wasn't offered in more places, but maybe the scarcity makes it more appealing to me. Probably not though.

Oh, and I love Colony in Stamford too. Great pizza, great place.

P. J. Clarke's: A Pub That Doesn't Serve a Pub Burger

I love this burger. I used to go a lot before it was redone (zero atmosphere then for cerrtain) and I go sometimes now as well. The burger is well prepared and tastes great. I love the home fries and wouldn't get the fries. I have ordered the onion rings, but mainly to put on the burger. Still a great burger. The wait can be a pain for sure, but I usually go right before noon and there is no issue. Not the case at 12:15.

Best French Fries in New York According to Restaurant Girl

I really like the fries at Quatorze Bis. Very tasty. While La Goulue isn't bad, I have always thought it was bit over-rated by its fans. Fries are pretty good though.

Does Anyone Really Love Pumpkin Pie?

I love pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, and I will eat butternut squash right out of the rind once it's roasted. I bake pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie in autumn, not really for the holidays so much. I generally love squash. I once made pies from a squash in Peru just because it was a novelty. These squashes/gourds are so big it takes two people to carry one. It's important to remember that pies aren't just a desert - they are often the main course, filled with meats, vegetables, and spices. My family usually has pumpkin pie around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but we also get tired of traditional holiday foods. Frequently, for Thanksgiving or Christmas, we will decide to have something different at the table. Last year we had an incredible Italian dish that my father prepared for Christmas, and I smoked chicken and baby back ribs for Thanksgiving. It didn't change the spirit of the holidays at all for us. So, I guess the important thing is that you enjoy what you cook and eat during the holidays.

I love the rainbow cake at Pinisi Bakery in the East Village, 4th Street between 1st and 2nd Ave. The subtle almond flavoring, the gentle sweet spike of raspberry jam and moist cake - it's a far cry to those found in every generic bakery, deli and grocery. It comes in cupcake form, as well as (my preference) rectangular block form (and covered in a chocolate ganache shell). In fact, I'm just finishing one up now as I write this! The only problem is that it is so time-intensive to make the the almond paste that every pastry and cake is rotated weekly/daily and appears at the whim of the baker!

the best rainbow cookies I've had in Manhattan are hands down from La Bella Ferrara on Mulberry St btwn Canal & Hester. It's right across the street from Sambuca's Cafe. very moist, no chocolate sprinkles, and plenty of raspberry jam :)

Petak's used to carry the most delicious rainbow cookies - perfectly moist cake layers with a strip of marzipan on each end. I was sad when they closed that I did not know where were from. I was thrilled to come across these same cookies a few weeks later @ Crumbs. Definitely the best I've had in this genre.

While I usually shun the typical "Little Italy" establishments that I feel are geared towards tourists looking for vestiges of a long gone Little Italy. After a quick trip to the newly and beautifully expanded DiPaolo's in Little Italy, I stepped into Ferrara's Italian bakery. I sampled the rainbow cookies and I have to say they were delicious! They had just the right amount of marzipan and the 3 delicate layers were full of yummy but not-too-sweet goodness. No wonder "America's Oldest Pasticceria" has been around for 115 years. Try it Grace, I'd be curious to know if it lives up to Da Bakery.

Have to disagree with everyone! The best rainbow cookies in the world and also most of their baked goods were found at Katz's Bakery in Liberty,New York in the Catskill Mountains. No longer open but sadly missed! bakers dozen

Da Bakery is da best!

Please, please do a round-up and review of rainbow cookies on Manhattan, if only so we can see all the pretty colors. Rainbow cookies (I mean, the name itself is so happy sounding) can be so very good but also so very bad and I'd like to avoid the crappy ones.

Grace - thanks so much for the topic - I was actually going to ask the same question AND cesnyc, thank you for your recipe - I was going to ask that, too.

I had a friend visit from Texas who had never had them before and fell madly in love with them. She begged me to find her a recipe. A relative makes them every Christmas and they are just plain awful - Maybe I can now say that I'll make them this year!

Eating in Vegas

Generally the food in Las Vegas is fair at best. Do not be swayed my the great meal you had in NYC and they chief opened a joint here, it won't be as good because they count a very low brow taste bud here. The best restaurant in town, hands down is Lotus of Siam the food is amazing the staff is great and the prices are cheap. You will need a reservation, s don't forget, because you won't want to miss this spot. I would also like to add that the new restaurants at Encore do not match the quality at Wynn, Sintra's was an hour long wait for the food, which was a big piece of tasteless meat on a plate when it finally came. Botero, only the deserts are worth touching and society is OK if you like Mac and Cheese.
