Cook the Book: Cowgirl Cuisine
Her potatoes au gratin are phenomenal
I like to make a nice salad with beautiful greens and herbs from the garden, some pears and figs, and a homemade dressing, usually blue cheese or vinaigrette depending. A plate of cheeses and crackers, a fruit plate, and then a rich dessert with a sweet wine following.
We moved from Zone 5 to Zone 6 last year--what a difference! If I want to plant spring crops, I do it in January here. Talk about starting the gardening itch early! Right now, I've got spinach, radishes, and peas coming up, along with Valentine Rhubarb. My herbs are greening up, too--oregano, lavender, lemon balm, mint, marjoram, and thyme.
Seed Savers Exchange has wonderful heirloom tomatoes and pepper plants, and I ordered six. I am looking forward to watching my three-year-old munch on cherry tomatoes still warm from the bush. There's nothing like passing on the magic of the earth to the next generation!
We'll plant green zucchini and yellow straightneck squash, Scarlet Runner beans, sweet onions, fingerling potatoes (I'd have those out now, but I want to avoid the life cycle of the Colorado potato beetle), and basil -- lots of basil.
Nigella Lawson
I read her from cover-to-cover. She's found a voice that makes her cookbooks accessible and funny. I don't even have to enjoy her recipes (not that I don't)--she's just fun to be with.
My Korean wedding banquet. OK, she had help, but I know her food and her organizational skills and so I can confidently say, she prepared this meal. And it was amazing and I will always remember it.
Mom rarely puts her heart into cooking. About twenty years ago, though, she prepared meat fondue -- that was great fun! And most memorable. Loved cooking my beef and chicken in the hot oil at the table. She also allowed all of us to make our own assortment of dipping sauces. My brother mixed grape jelly with godknowswhat. We all laughed. It's a shame we never had it again.
Her cooking and baking was so phenomenal, it's impossible to choose. She was always trying new recipes, especially from Julia and Jacques. I loved her pies and gratins.
My mother makes homemade ravioli and Italian spaghetti suace and meatballs to die for. She's Sicilian
Stuffed artichokes smothered in tomato sauce.. YUM.
The most memorable meal was when I was sick as a kid- it was very simple- cinnamon toast and soup. As an adult it is the best comfort food.
