If you like Greek food, definitely check out the Parthenon. And if you have a sweet tooth, Margie's has the best sundaes and homemade candies.
Backpacking Foods
I definitely thought of the whole confiscation thing after I posted this. So I think one thing I might do is make a little recipe book of backpacking recipes and whatnot. They're trying to stay on a tight budget, and I don't think any of them can cook.
National Pi Day Pi Pizza
@dbcurrie, I guess they're moving the Clark location to Northbrook. Which sucks. I use to go to DePaul and loved ordering from there.

National Pi Day Pi Pizza
There's also a FANTASTIC pizza restaurant in Chicago called My Pi.
New Tazo Tea Lattes at Starbucks: Thanks, But No Thanks
I had the Apple Chai the other day, and it was...Apple Cider with Chai mix. It was pretty good (It made the cider spicier, which was a nice change) but overall it wasn't worth the money.
Baskin-Robbins Turkey Cake
Last year I worked in a warehouse and the day before Thanksgiving they got us a turkey cake from a grocery store. Nobody touched it because we were all afraid it was going to be meat flavored.
Lunch Bag Art for Kids
I use to love when my dad would pack my lunch. He always drew a great Homer Simpson and I was always so proud.
The Birthplaces of Iconic American Foods
I have always heard the Hamburger was created in Seymour, Wisconsin. Granted, I'm from Wisconsin, but still.
Dentist Will Buy Your Leftover Halloween Candy
I had a friend who's dad was a dentist/orthodontist, and I remember at Halloween the "Halloween Fairy" would come and take his candy and leave a toy in its place.
Soda vs. Pop vs. Whatever: What Do You Call Cola Drinks?
maybe I'm crazy but in Sacramento I always heard it referred to as Coke.
And what about Soda Pop? That's when things get really crazy.
Soda vs. Pop vs. Whatever: What Do You Call Cola Drinks?
I've lived in three different places, all of which had their own name for it.
California-Coke
Wisconsin-Pop
North Carolina-Soda
Go Dawgs!! Tailigating Food?
pjracz10,
leinenkugel is a Wisconsin brand, but I know you can buy it around the country (I live in NC right now, and we're able to find it). They've got tons of flavors, a lot are seasonal, but if you can find a "Leinie Lodge" I recommend getting it. It's an assortment of their best beers.
Go Dawgs!! Tailigating Food?
For the Pack last year we made beer brats, but used leinenkugel's beer. It was AMAZING.
Break Up Food/ Emotional Food
You can tell when my mother is upset, because she makes Rice Crispy Treats, and they don't even make it to the pan.

Thank you SO much!
Now I'm really excited for December...

Soda vs. Pop vs. Whatever: What Do You Call Cola Drinks?
I am from Sparta,TN. Like most of the South, we called everything "coke" as a generic term, but there was another, even more common term. All soda pops were called "cold drinks" -pronounced "co'dranks." This referred only to soda pop, not to juices or any other, well, cold drinks. I've since lived in South Florida and New York City, where it was "soda," and Illinois, where it is "pop." I usually call it soda, but can never bring myself to call it pop; when I was a kid, everyone made vicious fun of anyone who said "pop" because it marked them as a Yankee (in our eyes- for some reason there was not such a stigma on soda.)

Madison = I’m a vegetarian too and I would definitely agree with mazacote, try Glass Nickel Pizza. The feta pizza they do is great, but I also love the lasagna. Go to the one on the west side of Madison. Also, I really like the black bean burger at the Nitty Gritty (Frances St). Both are Wisconsin favs.

Oops - sorrry. I forgot to mention - I was writing about Cafe Manna. Brookfield road just south of Capitol Drive.
wisconsin eats?
.In Brookfield (west side of Milwaukee) is a beautiful little upscale Cafe that is 100% vegetarian. They may be the only one in the entire area that is. Their food is WONDERFUL, as is their service and decor. If the weather's nice, sit on the patio. They are also Wisconsin's only restaurant certified by the national Green Restaurant Assn.
Chosen by the Milwaukee Journal as one of the top 8 new restaurants of 2008. They are world class (nice people, too).

Lake Park Bistro - Paul Bartolotta's restaurant off the lake on the north side of Milwaukee. Seafood as well a meat on the menu. Or stop in and have a drink and appetizers at the bar.

@Anneesha - In the last couple years, Sconnie as a term has taken off in popularity, in part because of a class-based (and sort of ethnicist/racist) rivalry between "Sconnies" (local kids) and "Coasties" (wealthier kids from larger cities on both coasts.) I teach there, so I see it first hand... There's also a new clothing store specializing in WI-themed t-shirts called "Sconnie Nation." But I'm drifting OT.
@skizziks - Ian's is definitely still delicious pizza. The mac and cheese slice ain't no joke.
Oh, and there's a Five Guys on State Street now , if you're into it. Just had my first burger and fries and I liked it a lot.

Funny, the first thing I thought of was Himal Chuli, but would have never remembered the name without the earlier posters reminding me. Ian's Pizza is another good bet in Madison, I've heard--I've only eaten at the Ian's in Chicago, which is awesome, and I imagine the original Madison locations are even better.

Leon's special sundae (in Milwaukee)- if you only get frozen custard once, this is the thing to have.
Chi-Town Suggestions
Pizza = Pequod's for thicker crust, Coal Fire for thinner crust.
Hot Dogs = Hot Doug's. Note: Duck fat fries are available only on Friday & Saturday. They are worth it.
Chi-Town Suggestions
Go for breakfast at Ann Sather's. Delicious Swedish pancakes and other goodies. And cinnamon buns that will break your heart. Absolutely perfect.
There's also a great breakfast place in the Gold Coast (near the Hancock) opposite the Sutton Place Hotel. Fluffy omelets and great hash browns.
Definitely have pizza...I love Lou Malnatti's and Gino's East above all others. Or try a stuffed pizza at Edwardo's.
Don't eat there (it costs a fortune and isn't that good) but go to the Hancock tower and have a drink in the bar. It's right below the observation deck, but it's free to get in. Sit by a window and look out over the lake.
Get an Italian Beef, by all means. I like mine cheesy combo, dipped, with peppers.
Tamales, Gyros and pizza puffs for drunken snacking.
Green Dolphin Street has a special place in my heart, as we went there the night of our engagement. The pizza is actually pretty good. The music is better.
Go see a Sox game, have a dog with mustard and a beer, and cheer them to victory for me. A hot dog at a Sox game tastes better than anything else.

the serious eats chicago guide is spot on, methinks. especially the tip about pequod's pizza.
on top of all their recommendations, i'd also suggest a late-night trip to the wiener's circle for a char dog with everything.

Backpacking Foods
One of my favorite foods to take backpacking is instant mac&cheese. Small, lightweight, easy to cook and delicious. Instant oatmeal, dried refried beans, and powdered soup are also great. Basic condiments (like ketchip/mustard/mayo packets) are also really nice to have. If you're not sure about what to send them along with, you could buy them empty, reusable squeeze tubes. They sell them online for super cheap and are really convenient for self-filling with small amounts of hot sauce, jam, whatever.
Some of the weirder things I like to take are Spam singles(Basically one thin slice of Spam in a foil package) and pre-cooked Indian food(the kind that comes in the silver foil packages and just requires heating). These things are perhaps less than practical to send a long with them, but would be awesome to receive in a package mid-trip perhaps.
Backpacking Foods
my friends and I love wasa crackers/ graham crackers with almond butter. another friend loved to take tortillas (they don't take up too much room in your pack). Maybe if you gave them some different nut butters - sunflower butter, almond butter, cashew butter. You get kind of tired of eating peanut butter with everything but you need the high calorie stuff.
Backpacking Foods
I do a ton of backpacking and take something called Fitnutz peanut butter with me. It's awesome- you just add a little water, and tastes soo good! You could even put it on any of those bars that need the extra flavor.. :)
Backpacking Foods
Oh, but ask them what they like if you want to buy them any sort of bars - I know I can't stand that stuff and it usually gets given away when the bf's mom sends us "healthy snacks" - bags of different bars that neither of us will bother eating.
Also, feed them well as a send-off and when they return. They'll be busy packing/unpacking/decompressing from it all.
Backpacking Foods
Definitely check into the import regulations on certain foods. I had to argue for an hour in Sydney, because I had a gift for a colleague of wild rice. It turns out that rice is not allowed to be imported into Australia, so I had to prove to him that wild rice isn't actually rice. It ended up going to a google search for an explanation. It's probably best to avoid that stuff.
Having said that, I agree with ProfessorChaos, frankly. Peru has an abundant supply of wonderful foods that I would encourage them to try first. However, if nothing else, when I travel overseas (12 days and a wake up until my first vacation in six years!!!!), I usually try to pack a few Luna Bars, or Genisoy Bars, or things like that. Just in case I get stuck somewhere where there isn't anything, or in case I am just starving on a train. Luna bars are my favorites, but there are heaps of kinds out there that are nice, too. Plus, they don't really melt, expire, go rancid or anything like that.
Backpacking Foods
you might want to think about medical fly back insurance, I know it's not food related but, if something happens it may be the most important thing they've ever been given. I would definately set them up a picnic type food for the trip out though maybe include nuts and other munchies as well as tasty sandwiches that arent to offensive smelling to others.
National Pi Day Pi Pizza
is "Provel" that sort of tangy but mozzarella-like cheese some pizza places are using on their pies?
