Grilling: Green Chile Cheeseburger

Of course we have green chiles in Austin. The grocery roasts them in the store, but some years we buy a case and roast them at home. A few years ago I happened to be in Las Cruces and Deming when the chiles were just about to be picked. It was an awesome site driving by the fields of chiles. They are in the store now, but the season must be about to wrap up. Chuy's, where I first met my wife has the Elvis green chile fried chicken which beats a good chile cheese burger and I'm pretty sure they don't use chile powder or cumin. Yum!

The Nasty Bits: Lamb's Neck Stew

As a kid going to school in the 60's, there wasn't a cafeteria serving hot lunches and we all brought lunches from home. Even after they started serving food in school, many of us continued to bring a sack lunch... remember those lunch boxes with a thermos in the lid and Mighty Mouse painted on the outside? Anyway, lunch was usually a P&J or balogna sandwich. Occasionally I would get a tongue sandwich. I'm sure it made me who I am today. I can tell you one thing.... It was incredibly difficult to find somebody to trade for the tongue sandwich. As an adult, I now travel all over the world and eat most everything. And there are definitely some interesting things, especially in Asia.

Needed: a meal that would win a man's heart!

Simple is usually best. Hard to beat a steak and baked potato, for example. Of course, that may not fit the budget or show off your culinary skills. Try to avoid casseroles, but hearty food that has interesting touches is going to be welcome. I'm pretty adventurous compared to most guys I know. I'll eat just about anything. I love seafood, but that isn't for everybody. FInd out what the guy loves. Serve meat that has been cooked simply in the kitchen and not on the grill, but with some kind of sauce or gravy prepared from the pan drippings. Do pasta with fresh chopped tomatoes and basil, for example or do pesto instead of the old reliable marinary or alfredo sauces.

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

Sadly, Blue Bell is only a regional. Thankfully I live in Texas, where it has always been available. Unless you are having freshly made ice cream like Steve's in Somerville, MA or Amy's in Austin, TX, there isn't anything better than Blue Bell. I thought they had invented cookies and cream ice cream, but I may be wrong about that. In any case, with such a great vanilla base, their wide variety of flavors with various combinations of add-ins is outstanding. Moo-lennium is a fave.
