In Videos: How To Peel a Kiwi
New to me! That was beautiful ;)
Robyn, I recently experienced a Portuguese donut in Hawaii and it totally reminded me of the mexican churro I know so well having grown up in San Diego. I wrote a silly review on yelp about it http://www.yelp.com/biz/leonards-malasadamobile-laie# but I'm also now very interested in the variations of frying dough...gotta love it!
Thanks for this post! I grew up eating pomelos but didn't know until recently that they were called pomelos. In vietnamese the same word is used for both grapefruit and pomelo! I too had a grocery store confrontation which resulted in a mother (with her child) buying a pomelo for the first time. I left feeling happy and hopeful that they learned about a new fruit that they would enjoy together for years to come - maybe even generations to come!
Jenn - I was just there on Monday...wish I was still there. Here's some pics of the hot & spicy:

weeeee! I'm heading to Honolulu tomorrow so your post could not have been more timely! :) I'm a fan of fried spam with rice and a fried egg on top! My friends and I have been known to get together for spam nights! Thanks for the post and for getting me ready for my vacation!
Cathy, nice post and lovely pics! My folks always made chao ga (chicken porridge) for my siblings and I when we had a cold - so it's very much a comfort food to me. I was never a big fan of the congealed blood (huyết), but it could be that I should re-taste it as an adult ;) Oh, and what's not to love about carb on carb action of the fried dough (giò cháo quẩy) in the porridge? Mmmm...feed me now!
Not too many restaurants in San Francisco offer this fine dish...wish they would.
I'm also a native San Diegan and love that you put together this list! I've been to El Zarape but I haven't tried their fish tacos yet. If you go, add some lobster dishes to your group's selection -- they're awesome!
Got it. I finished the easy level but I'm not going to attempt the advanced...I'm already feeling a bit dizzy. I'm a big sodoku fan as well as a top chef fan but the combination is much more difficult. Tip: choose nine pictures that are very different like the curly haired guy with glasses on the green background is an easy one to spot.
Nice photo, Grace! Saigon Sandwiches in San Francisco is the place to go for some great sandwiches!
now my memory is coming back. i tried to imitate the hawaiin garlic shrimp plate and i may be close. if you have any suggestions, please let me know, thanks

I was taught this trick by my Exec Chef years ago. People are still amazed when I show them how easy it is.
This is good if you're needing slices for presentation purposes. (And new to me!)
But the easiest way to eat a kiwi is just to slice it in half and scoop it out with your spoon.
Thank you SO much for this article! Having never had one, I enjoyed your story helping me define this jumbo mysterious citrus fruit. Shortly after reading this, I saw a pomelo in Whole Foods. The peeling of the fruit can be a bit laborious, but is worth every bit! The way the juice was misting from the fruit's pith as I peeled it, the scent with which it filled the apt. (even unpeeled, it's pretty yummy scented!) & the light citrusy flavor was amazing! I bought another 1 the next time I went to Whole Foods. For now on when I see this delicious fruit, there will always be 1 in my bag to take hm.!!! Thx SO much!
I love Giovanni's, they're the best! Haven't had it in my heart to venture to Romy's yet, since I love Giovanni's so dearly.
Oh, we get it all right. Beyond *offal* mystery meat likely to be literally swept off the factory floor, (is there anyone who hasn't yet seen that USDA video on slaughterhouses?) forced upon trusting islanders by the military industrial complex that took over their islands. Just because some company hired chemists to create an addicting concoction of flavors to mask highly questionable 'food' doesn't make it something you want to put in your body. That's what we 'get'.
You can make spam musubi yourself if you have the right tools
After eating a few cans worth of Spam musubi (they're too easy to make!) it did start to wear me down, but the first few were AWESOME!!!
Man I wanna go to Hawaii so badly.
Even though I grew up in So Cal, I grew up with Spam (happens when you're Filipino) and all kinds of other islander goodies. I think I'll head out to L & L's for dinner tonight...
