Win a Free Organic D'Artagnan Turkey

After trying it for the first time a few days ago, it may be time for some pumpkin cheesecake.

After winning myself and a lot of the family over with balsamic-caramelized Brussels sprouts last year, and my undying borderline-obsession with bacon, those two might have to have a meeting in a serving dish this Thanksgiving.

Honey-brined and smoked turkey. Add a bacon-and-cornbread stuffing and I'm in unnecessary cholesterol heaven.

Ham in Coca-Cola sounds interesting...I've been sold on the soda-marinade thing since trying Dr Pepper-glazed ribs, which were awesome even though I don't like Dr Pepper.

That pumpkin cheesecake just sounds awesome. And the perfect way to induce unconsciousness if the rest of the meal hasn't accomplished it for you.

Cook the Book: 'New Classic Family Dinners'

Being one of the first dishes I learned to make, main course Mexican rice is great. Heavily seasoned ground beef, fresh tomato and herbs, and whatever I needed to finish off got tossed in. It was always unique and always great, whether it was leftover jalapeno poppers, half a can of garbanzo beans, or a few delicate saffron strands.

'Are You a Menu Whisperer?': Take 2

I cook a lot myself, so I always look for familiar (or at least interesting) ingredients combined in novel ways. I went to Molly Moon's in Seattle (an amazing all-homemade ice-cream shop in Capitol Hill) just recently, and while my friends stuck with strawberry vanilla and salted caramel, both of which were great, I gave their raspberry sage milkshake a try, and was rewarded with a superb and unique-tasting dessert. It mostly comes down to knowing what you like and being willing to try it in a context that's unfamiliar.

Cook the Book: 'Zingerman's Guide to Better Bacon'

It's a multi-sensory experience: the taste is a given, but it sizzles so alluringly in the pan, the smell turns the kitchen into an aerial appetizer, it turns a reddish-brown color to let you known it's done, and then (when cooked the way I love it) it bends just a little before giving way. If you add in my likely supernatural bacon-sense, that's six, not just five senses being assaulted (in the kindest way) by bacon.

White House Does Not Serve Foreign Beer

Hey, at least they've got Stone, Russian River, Deschutes, and many other fine American breweries putting out quality craft beers. Think of the reactions of foreign diplomats when served an ice-cold glass of Arrogant Bastard by the President of the US!

The Secret Ingredient: Rose Water

If you're in Tacoma, WA, stop by MSM Deli on 6th (just west of where it meets Division and Sprague) to pick up rose water for these recipes. And check out their surprisingly good selection of beers while you're there.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Two Peter Luger Steaks

Bacon-wrapped filet mignon, but if I'm looking for steak-y satisfaction, a 20oz+ porterhouse can't be beat.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

Bacon-wrapped, maple-glazed fresh salmon steaks. A friend had just gone fishing and we wanted to cook them up, and that was what we had in the fridge. Cooked the bacon to almost-done, marinated the steaks in maple syrup and a bit of soy sauce, wrapped them in foil and tossed 'em on the bbq. The outside was a crispy, faintly salted shell, and the inside was pure deliciousness. Every forkful was like unwrapping a present for my taste buds.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

Smokin' Dick's in Seattle (a name that always elicits either a laugh or a sour look, but it's good for a reaction in any case). Reasonably priced and with huge portions, as it's in the U district, and with no sacrifice in quality compared to all but the most expensive spots in town. Couple that with a great atmosphere eating in or easy take-out and you've got a winner.

Top 10 Improbable McDonald's Items from Around the World

The worst I encountered was at McDonalds in Hong Kong a few years back (I just moved back to the States after 8 years there). The Green Curry burger not only smelled like the floor of an off-license Indian kitchen after the dinner rush, but the curry was almost glazed on the cardboard-like hamburger patty, and looked like someone had dragged it through a vat of snot before overcooking it. The taste was...horrible. Really, indescribably bad, not a single person I knew or even heard of liked it, and it was quickly dropped from the local menu.

Cook the Book: 'The Best Barbecue on Earth'

I'd definitely start in Hong Kong with some char siu (barbecued pork), not because it's the greatest in the world (that honor going to Tex-Mex cuisine), but because it's solid food, unique, available in a slightly different variety everywhere including grocery store delis and 7-11s (which are everywhere), and addictively delicious.
