Laura Staugaitis

A recent east coast emigre, I'm eating my way around Chicago when not being crafty at my day job with Blick Art Materials.

  • Location: Chicago
  • Favorite foods: Foraged fruit. The thievery involved adds a whole new dimension of flavor. Also, Ziyad brand canned hummus. It's off the chain. (I've eaten an entire can at once.)
  • Last bite on earth: The roasted brussels sprouts I had at Thanksgiving this year. Although if I were going to expire immediately, it'd have to be a large quantity of ice cream consumed in summertime New England.

Bang Bang Pie Shop Opening this Weekend

Can't wait! I had their candied bacon at Dose and it was UNreal. And I'm a little baconed-out, generally speaking.

TGI Fry-Day: Chili-Rubbed Onion Strings from DMK Burger Bar

Joe, if you're a ketchup skeptic, try to catch the housemade squash ketchup that's sometimes on the menu (I had it with the veggie burger) at Uncommon Ground.

I'd just like to confirm that I did, in fact, follow my own recommendation and had my V-day dinner at bopNgrill. It was fantastic, as usual.

'Time Out Chicago' Releases Epic Brunch Issue

Maybe they realized that touting m. henry would lead to lines that would push over the brink of intolerable (a line they toe right now!). besides, m. henrietta's almost identical... I live near both and favor the sister spot.

Western Avenue: The Real Tastiest Street in Chicago

Ha! So true. Took me a minute to even remember what street Broadway was. And I can't think of a single food memory from there...

Come to Khan BBQ

Michael, I'm not sure where in the city you live, but as a (rare WASP) resident of Rogers Park, it should be noted that the population in Khan BBQ simply reflects who lives in the area, just as at the post office and the library.

The Vegan Experience, Day 6: Calorie Control

Some dairy free recommendations from a dairy lover who can't eat it anymore: almond milk! (for cereal, espresso drinks, oatmeal, smoothies) It's an easy way to incorporate fat into recipes without going crazy with oil, and has a lovely creamy mouthfeel. The maple almond butter is off the chain (and you can try a 1 ounce pack at Whole Foods or wherever). So Delicious coconut milk ice cream is also incredible. Those are really my only 2 dairy "subs". Also you should give Justin's Nut Butters a try.

The Vegan Experience, Day 3: I'll Have That Without [X] Please

As someone who is dairy free and gluten free FAR from voluntarily (I was planning to go into the bread and cheese business professionally...) 1) the protein structure of gluten is quite similar to casein, the protein found in cow and sheep's milk, so many people (like me) do have a joint issue and are not helped by Lactaid, sadly. 2) On that note, though, (and yes, I saw Jessica's comment that she was kidding), I find it extremely common for people to mash or mix up the 2 concerns. The thing that's the most frustrating is when people, hearing of my restrictions, say "what do you eat??", dole out pity, and otherwise unintentionally undermine my status as someone who knows a lot about food and eats adventurously.

Berkshire Pork in Chicagoland

I don't know where to buy it, but I know Anteprima in Andersonville often has it on the menu.

Cook the Book: 'The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook'

Gravy and biscuits... I remember being so baffled by their ubiquity in southern hotels!

I miss Hannah's sandwich reviews!

I have to agree with many others...Pie!

Cook the Book: 'Sarabeth's Bakery'

Shout out to girl power! Noticing a trend, I scanned all 384 comments, and just 3 people attributed "dad" as their primary baking teacher! As for me, mum as well.

Cook the Book: 'Baked Explorations'

We were freezing after a January performance of Swan Lake at Lincoln Center and stumbled upon a tiny, black-and-white-tiled Parisian patisserie that warmed us with hot chocolate and apricot tarts. We've never been able to find it again.

Are those walnuts on the butterscotch brownie? They look like pecans...

Cakespy: Birthday Cake French Toast

I wish you made recipes that were edible by the general population!

Ice Cream and Pie pairings

You can't beat vanilla... but maybe a very light strawberry, or vanilla with strawberries (red, white, and blue!). Lemon and blueberry also go well together, although I am not crazy about citrus ice cream.

Chocolate Chickpea Cake

This is a very dense, not-too-sweet cake with a nice chocolatey flavor. It's also pretty healthy, packing tons of fiber from the garbanzos and protein from the eggs, and is actually a really nice breakfast sweet. It keeps well in... More
