Great Gelato. Not Ice Cream. In the U.S. Where? Whose?
ChristineB -- I was about to say Cafe Istria too! I just love it. My college dorm is only a block away. All of their baked goods are great too.
My favorite cold cereal is _____
Heritage flakes. I also really like CinnaBunnies. With (a lot) of 2% milk and fairly soggy. And banana.
Interesting food combinations
No, bananas and sour cream is DELICIOUS. I don't think it's weird or gross, I think it's in the realm of "normal" food combinations! Score!

Eating out in Chicago!
I second Lao Sze Chuan (in Chinatown). Also, Emilio's Tapas Restaurant near Navy Pier is very good (maybe Cafe Iberico is better but I've never been there). Giordano's (multiple locations, one near Greektown) is totally the best for Chicago-style pizza; you have to get the spinach pizza. It is so good! Tuscany Restaurant (I've been to the one on Taylor St., near UIC) is pretty good. There are tons of good places to eat in Pilsen. There is a very nice Moroccan restaurant called Andalous in Belmont.
Also, this is fancy and expensive so maybe not what you're wanting to be recommended, but the Brazilian restaurant Fogo de Chao is all-you-can-eat grilled meat place (also with an outstanding salad bar) that is soooo good. But, you can also get cheap "authentic" ethnic food many places so you might not to bother with that.

Question of the Day: What's the 'J' on your PBJ?
Raspberry jam (homemade, with seeds). Also, strawberry is good. The best is blueberry/raspberry.
The AP Slanders Chinese Food
I think that the article points out several times that what it's talking about is not "Chinese food" but rather "Chinese restaurant food."
I suppose it would be nice if the article had also pointed out that more normal, traditional, not American-restaurant-style fast-food-type Chinese food was very healthy. However, I think the article was obviously about the Americanized "Chinese restaurant" so I think it made its point effectively.
Truffle Oil
Adding some to scrambled eggs or to poached eggs is supposed to be really good.
Do you like 'chunks' in your ice cream?
I like chunks, including chunks of fruit, chocolate, and nuts, but there shouldn't be too many and I really, really dislike swirls of anything, especially caramel. I don't like caramel and I really hate it in ice cream.
I also don't like cookie or cake or brownie chunks in ice cream.
Dunkin Donuts...hehehe
In the Boston area (where there are many sources for both good and "good" coffee) Dunkin' Donuts coffee is considered good. I think it's definitely OK, my favorite is Peet's, but everyone I know considers that Dunkin' Donuts coffee is surprisingly good for being a chain.

Interesting food combinations
My favorite is pickles and cinnamon applesauce. It works best if you have whole dill pickles. Bite the end off, then spoon some cinnamon applesauce onto the top of the pickle and eat. I add more applesauce after each bite.
Interesting food combinations
in n' out onion slices dipped in ketchup with black pepper sprinkled on top. oh and mcdonalds (!) french fries dipped in the ice cream cone.
Interesting food combinations
First, it's a good thing I don't have to use proper grammatical rules here, because I'm not going to. I love mac and cheese with tuna and peas. Rice, tuna and frozen peas works well...of course it needs a sprinkling of cheese. French fries with honey...yum! Bananas with sour cream?...that is something I might enjoy. I can see the whole M&M and goldfish cracker thing working...too bad I can't eat goldfish anymore! Before I found gluten-free crackers and bread I liked, I would put the following on plain rice cakes...not all mixed together!...nutella, brown sugar and cinnamon swirl cream cheese, any flavor jelly or jam, peanut butter, a slice of cheese... Applesauce goes with everything. Sausage with maple syrup is a combination found everywhere. Frozen sausage with maple syrup is out there, the McGriddle, etc. Oh man, I used to love the McGriddle! Banana pudding with chocolate sprinkles...I never got into the peanut butter and mayo sandwich, but mayo and cheese work great between two slices of bread. This thread is quite interesting, and I look forward to reading more.
Interesting food combinations
When I was younger, there were some candy shops that sold chocolate-covered potato chips. They were absolutely yummy!

Do a search on Serious Eats for the recent post on Hot Dougs - sounds amazing, wish I could go! I've never been there myself.
Okay I found the link:

Oh Blackbird, Avec and Schwa. I forgot to mention those earlier.
Eating out in Chicago!
Definitely go to Hot Doug's on Friday for their french fries - fried in duck fat on Fridays!
Blackbird for a dinner.
Alinea for a 24 course one of a kind meal.
Eating out in Chicago!
Best Deli: Manny's Coffee Shop on South Jefferson St. near Roosevelt Rd. Pastrami and corned beef sandwiches a foot high and great homemade brisket, short ribs, chopped liver, potato pancakes, etc. Lots of "movers and shakers" chowing down in this throwback to the 50's.
Eating out in Chicago!
coolname, do you mean the Maxwell St. stand on the corner of Damen and Elston? That's been very recently taken down.
For Lula, you can go to Farm Dinner on Mondays and get an entirely local menu.
I also recommend Terragusto. They make their pasta daily and their menu features Northern Italian dishes with local market ingredients. Despite being a pretty nice restaurant, it's BYOB only, so don't forget to bring some wine.
Eating out in Chicago!
Best Dog: Hot Dougs
Best Polish: Is Maxwell St. still there?
Best Deep Dish: This will incite some controversy. My vote is Geno's east. I like the cornmeal crust.
Best Burger: Hard to say but Bar Louie has $1 burgers on Tuesday and they are pretty damn good.
Best BBQ: Ribs n' Bibs
Best Sandwich: Italian Beef at Al's #1 on Taylor St.
For my other best of's see my post above.
Eating out in Chicago!
ewww, i wouldn't go to the med, unless you're getting bread or pastries from the bakery. the florian is only a step above, and that's not saying much. salonica's okay, but i'd save your money for other spots, if i were you. (if you must eat in hyde park, go to seoul corea, really.)
Eating out in Chicago!
I need a quick BEST OF breakdown. I'm headed to Chi-Town in July
Best Hot Dog
Best Polish Sausage
Best Deep Dish Pizza
Best Burger
Best BBQ
Best Sandwich
Best anything else I don't know about and should...
Eating out in Chicago!
Lula Cafe is hand down my favorite restaurant in Chicago. There are two menus to choose from: their regular (and very reasonably priced) menu, with a lovely beet bruschetta and chickpea couscous; and their weekly (slightly more expensive) menu full of local produce and innovative food. Their brunch is fantastic too. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Eating out in Chicago!
also in Hyde Park is Solonica... great Greek diner, try the egg salad
Eating out in Chicago!
I would go Cafe Florian before the med (medici) but maybe that's just because I lived right across the street from it.
Eating out in Chicago!
IMO Iberico is better.
It's been a while since we lived there - but we loved Rose Angelis and Las Tablas (sp?). We also went every week to a small Thai place called Panang at Chicago and Clark.
Eating out in Chicago!
I moved away. Now I miss these non-chains:
1. Blind Faith Cafe (amazing veg restaurant in Evanston. You won't believe what they can do with seitan!)
2. El Barco (mexican place on Ashland that keeps it real)
3. Rick Bayless's places
4. Mirai Sushi in Wicker Park
5. Flo (so so good for mexican-inspired brunch)
Interesting food combinations
LOL I thought I was the only one that dipped french fries in my Frostys -- milkshakes and sundaes too. Yay!!!
When I went to McDonald's as a kid, I used to throw 4-5 french fries in my saimin* and fish them out later. They were soggy, but for whatever reason, I loved it.
* Hawaiian version of ramen except in a fish-based broth, with fishcake, green onions, and char siu on top.
@Chisai - I introduced the mayo+soy sauce as asparagus dip to my husband years ago and he LOVES it. He uses it with fish sticks, french fries, anything you can think of.
I always...always...dip my french fries in mayo-ketchup-mustard (1/2 mayo, 1/3 ketchup, 1/6 mustard), unless I'm at a Greek place, then I dip them in the tzatziki. Replace "mayo" with Kewpie mayo when I am at home.
Growing up, I used to dip my fries in honey, mainly because it was leftover from the fried chicken. I would also dab brine from pickled jalapenos on my fried chicken and eat it with whole jalapenos. I was also one of those kids who loved digging for and eating marrow. What a mess!
French onion dip lightly spread on fresh sour dough bread and sour cream and onion potato chips in the middle.
Interesting food combinations

Interesting food combinations
Best snack - candy corn and salted peanuts
Toasted bagels with cottage cheese and applesauce on top.
Speaking of applesauce, one of my friends just loves to dip potato chips in applesauce!
Back in the day, used to love blue box mac & cheese w/ tuna and peas, Haven't had that in years.
Interesting food combinations
