"What kind of crappy ring did you get for 77 tickets?!?"

Funniest response to a proposal, ever.

A Virtual Tour of Kenji Alt's Food Lab Kitchen

Oh my god, your kitchen is HUGE. I am jealous.

Jaw Surgery and Restaurant Rec.

Having had my jaws wired shut for six weeks, it really sucks.

The somewhat deceptive thing about this is that you think you can have anything that's liquid form, but it's not really the case. A lot of smoothies have little tiny raspberry seeds in them or soups have little bits of onion or meat in them. If her jaws are wired shut, she probably won't be able to have soft foods, pureed foods, etc. What is also unfortunately is that if she tries to consume anything that is too large/hard to go through the wires, she'll have to spit them out, which is embarrassing and uncomfortable.

I would suggest a ramen place, such as Ippudo, as well. She'll just have the broth, but at least it's delicious broth. Also, a lot of Chinese restaurants have many soups on the menu as well.

Dinner Tonight: Flounder Sandwich Marinated in Fish Sauce, with Sriracha Mayonnaise and Pickled Red Onions

Nick, you would win the Quickfire Challenge of making easy yet delicious dinners.

Well, actually, I don't know how quick you are at making these things, but they are delicious. This is something else I'll definitely make.

An Introduction to Karē-Raisu, Japanese Curry Rice

I can't wait for the curry recipe from scratch! New York has great Japanese restaurants that serve delicious curry, but I'd love to make it at home.

Savoy, At Lunch: The Best Burger in New York? No Cheese, Please

@MissBrownEyes - I know $15 seems like a lot for a burger, but it's actually pretty average for New York restaurants, especially at places such as Savoy, 5 Napkin, etc. I'm guessing you don't live here, right?

Also, in terms of underrated burgers in New York City, I recently discovered the burger at a little place called Cafe Ronda on the UWS. Ever since I had the Minetta Black Label Burger, I have trouble eating another burger and not thinking, "Hmm, this is good but I've had better." The burger at Cafe Ronda, however, is pretty delicious and only $10 (without any toppings).

Cook the Book: 'Bromberg Bros. Blue Ribbon Cookbook'

Cafe 71 or Gray's Papaya, which are across the street from each other on the Upper West Side in New York. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll venture into Koreatown.

NYC: HB Burger and Heartland Brewery Redux

That looks so perfectly cooked. Thanks for the great photos.

What Are Your Best Vending Machine Memories?

I don't have lots of vending machine memories, but honestly, my favorite one is actually someone else's vending machine disaster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBXxmISAMA8

The Nasty Bits: Frankenstein's Frog, Stir-Fried

This story reminds me of the time my family went to a Chinese hot pot buffet together and they had some blue crabs cut in half on the buffet. My mother put some on her plate and when we sat down at the table, one of the halves started twitching. My mother says to us in Cantonese, "Wow, they're so fresh!" and promptly plunked the crabs in the hot pot.

Donors Choose Brown Bag Challenge Update

I LOVE Donors Choose. I was a middle school teacher in the Bronx and my school benefited from the generosity of Donors Choose tremendously.

I definitely don't want to take away from SE's Brown Bag Challenge, but I do want to provide another option if people don't see exactly what they want. If you have an idea that you don't see there, visit The Generation Project. It's like Donors Choose, but rather than the donors choosing the project to give money to, the donors design their own project based on their own passions. Then teachers can apply to get the money to do the project.

Thank you SE for supporting education!

Lighting advice for photographing food

I've been taking more photos of my cooking lately for my new food blog a chef's daughter, but my photographs have been turning out kind of poor. Basically nothing like the beautiful things you'd see in Photograzing.

Part of the problem is the lighting in my kitchen. I'm in a small Manhattan galley kitchen that is lit by a large overhead fluorescent light. If I don't use flash, everything looks kind of gray. If I do use flash, everything comes out super bright. I'm using a point and shoot Casio Exilim 7.2 MP. I can't go buy a super fancy and expensive camera, so does anyone have any advice they can share with me to improve the quality of my photos?
