Off the Beaten Path: Qingdao Cuisine at Flushing’s M&T Restaurant
Thanks very much, Joe! As it happens, I'm headed up that way with a couple of chowhounds this week for a repeat visit, and with so many intriguing dishes to choose from, every bit of intel helps.
Do you know whether M&T's wall menu, those 60-odd strips of colored paper, duplicates or expands on the handheld menu?
New Jersey Dispatch: Peru’s Favorite Foreign Cuisine
"These restaurants pose one major problem; they are in neighborhoods so rich with eating possibilities that every meal is tinged with regret. ... This New Jersey beat is a real challenge."
I'm glad you're hanging in there for our benefit. Nice photos of these Chinese-leaning dishes, the taypa especially.

A New Food Truck To Try: El Paluche
Like most of the chimi trucks in Upper Manhattan (as well as El Dugout, the Venezuelan truck that serves patacones Maracuchos), El Peluche gets geared up around 7:00 p.m. and goes late into the night. When I was researching patacones this summer, El Peluche's previous digs (that is, the address given on Gourmet.com) had been sealed off by construction; look for the truck near Ninth Ave. and 205th.

Serious Green: How to Get Free Fruit via Urban Fruit Harvesting
In New York the mulberry season has almost passed, but lately I've been surprised to find peach trees growing by the roadside in Astoria and Crown Heights. I had a fun time harvesting the first (my fingers were free of mulberry-juice stains in just a few days); in a month or so, we'll see about the second!
NYC Food Events for the Weekend (and Beyond)
Serious Eaters should note that Saturday's Bolivian celebration in Jersey City is actually two events. First is a parade, beginning at 11:00 and winding down near City Hall, where I came across some interesting street food last year; admission is free. Second is a festival at the Mount Carmel Church, perhaps two miles away; it begins at 4:30, and there's an admission charge of $10 or $15 depending on when you arrive. I didn't attend last year, but the event website gives a sense of what you'll find.
There's another Bolivian festival on Sunday, outdoors in Hackensack, free admission, which I'd check out myself if I weren't going to be in Connecticut. Details on Eating In Translation.
New Jersey Dispatch: The Great Wall Supermarket
There's also a Great Wall at 137-45 Northern Blvd., in Flushing, Queens, a little east of Main St. and almost immediately across the boulevard from the lately celebrated Hunan House.
Good take-out food near van Cortland Park (Bronx)
JGelfand: For that location, howfresheats has pegged the options well; the area around the 231st St. station offers the best and most convenient nearby options. (Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen, at 552 W. 235th, will take you off the main drag, but it's not out of reach.) I agree with howfresheats about the hardscrabble 242nd St.-area businesses, which aren't well-suited for supplying a picnic.
Good take-out food near van Cortland Park (Bronx)
Van Cortlandt is a big park -- more than 20 percent larger than Central Park, in fact. Where in the park do you plan to picnic?
Where can I get a good Pupusa in the city?
You can find pupusas in Manhattan, too, although unless you live in El Alto it's still a trek:

Dutch New Herring with Beer Pairings at Jimmy’s No. 43
I love the smell of Prima Pils with my herring.
It smells like ... Victory.
New Jersey Dispatch: Moustache Bill’s Diner
Well and good; I like scrapple myself. But for Serious Eaters who salivate at the thought of seafood at the seashore, I'm pretty sure that Mustache Bill's gets theirs from Shore Catch, also on the Barney end of Long Beach Island (near Viking Village) and, on Fridays and Saturdays, at the Fulton Stall Market.
New Jersey Dispatch: Moustache Bill’s Diner
It's been nearly four years since my last visit, so the menu may have changed, but I hope you didn't satisfy your scrapple craving at the expense of something more distinctive to Long Beach Island, like an omelette stuffed with local blue-claw crabmeat.
Dining Recommendations Gun Hill/White Plains Rd
At White Plains Rd. near 216th St., you'll find African/American Restaurant, the Nigerian-Ghanaian eatery formerly known as Aziza. And a few blocks south of the Gun Hill station, on Burke Ave., there's a cluster of venues that (last I looked) included a couple of interesting Caribbean joints.
Lambsplosion of Uyghur Food at Cafe Kashkar in Brighton Beach
So, they've redecorated! Must be doing well. As ever, though, more the place for lamb lovers than lamb haters.
First Look at Fulton Stall Market
That LBI seafood vendor, Shore Catch, had some interesting scallops, too.
food events in new york during memorial day weekend?
The two crawfish boils originally scheduled for this weekend have been postponed till next -- that is, till Memorial Day weekend. There's also Taiwan Day in Union Square, a small Ecuadorian festival in Morningside Heights, and a Haitian event in Brooklyn. And more like this, I bet. I'll post more details on my blog next Friday.
Sugar Rush: Pistachio Cupcake at Pinisi Bakery
Most of the menu is Eurocentric, reflecting the chef-owner's training and earlier career, but he still prepares at least one Southeast Asian specialty, in keeping with his heritage and the restaurant that preceded Pinisi.
Initial Thoughts on Red Hook Vendors 2009
The last (southernmost) stand on Clinton St. is the aforementioned Perez truck, white with a neon green menu, where my friends and I had the tacos de barbacoa and carne asada, and I (largely by myself) had the tostada with pata de res, or beef tendon.
Ditto the above thoughts on the tamale from the Carrello stand, which flies the Guatemalan flag; you've had plenty of mashed potatoes that were nowhere near as fluffy.
Best Date Shakes in Southern California
Munchiz Cold Delights is opening in the Palm Springs Mall in the beginning of October and they are serving Date Shakes and Raspados (Shaved Ice) along other snacks.

Off the Beaten Path: Qingdao Cuisine at Flushing’s M&T Restaurant
@boppy: how do you really feel Robyn? Sounds like a SE:NY expedition is in order...there's a ton of stuff I haven't tried (duck yolk with pumpkin and a whole series of dishes named after the resto, like Mei Er Te fish hotpot)...and stuff I've tried that I left out of the piece, like squid dumplings

Off the Beaten Path: Qingdao Cuisine at Flushing’s M&T Restaurant
@EIT, my pleasure Dave. I believe that the strips of colored paper duplicate as well as augment the menu. I know for certain that item No. 28, pork chop with shrimp sauce, on the back of the takeout menu also appears on the wall. I didn't incl;ude it in this post, but it's some of the best fried pork I've ever had!
Visiting New York City? 7 Must-Eat Pizzas You Should Try
2 days overall, yes, but AM only requires 12 hours of actual 'rental' @ the new motorino. So I'd imagine it'd be the same as you remember...you lucky b**t*rds.

@Pblogger since The Tatooed Uber-Pizzaiolo's dough does not require refrigeration, he can probably just bring it with him.

Visiting New York City? 7 Must-Eat Pizzas You Should Try
I lived in NY all my life, then moved to Phoenix some years ago. There is NO substitute for NY pizza, but there are some pretty good runners-up. Pizzeria Bianco being a prime example. However, we have Grimaldi's now and I will tell you that pizza frozen from a box is better! Grimaldi's pizza is like tomato sauce on a wheat thin cracker. No give to the "crust", no oil, it BREAKS when you bite it! There is another pizza joint in Scottsdale which never gets any mention, too few know it's there, but it has true NY style pizza, so put this one down on your list to try: Joe's New York Pizza. The oil runs down your arm, the sauce is great and the cheese needs a sissor to detatch it from your mouth! And they even sell slices!
Get In My Belly Now: Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwich from Peter Pan Bakery
The doughnut must be a little too fat. In Montreal we put the best ice cream into a macaron (French light almond cookie).
It’s the best of French culture and the Italian art de vivre. Here are some pictures: http://www.boutiquepointg.com/?tag=macarons-glaces
Get In My Belly Now: Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwich from Peter Pan Bakery
you guys.....in italy, in the south at least, a favorite local breakfast (!!) treat is a freshly baked, still warm, bun shaped, sweet brioche with gelato - often served with whipped cream and one of those paddle spoons.....
presumably, in small towns this was to sell left over fresh gelato, because you can't keep it around long and also sell more baked goods
you can try one at l'arte del gelato in the village.....they are devine.
Get In My Belly Now: Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwich from Peter Pan Bakery
Based on the recommendations of you and Shitty, I went to check this place and the sandwich out yesterday. What a great throwback local business with great donuts. However, the ice cream on the sandwiches needed to be much colder. It was a shitty mess. Based on pictures I've seen, I don't think that's the case all the time though. I certainly hope not.

Get In My Belly Now: Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwich from Peter Pan Bakery
I remember about 10-15 years ago, ben an jerrys made a brownie ice cream sandwich that they sold in convenience stores and supermarkets that was unbelievably good. I'm pretty sure it was cookies and cream ice cream inside.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
Yesterday I went to White Rose in Roselle for a double cheesburger. I don't know if it's because of the change in owners or if they just had a bad night, but my burger wasn't good at all. Dried out and lacking it's usual great flavor. If I went for the first time I would be greatly disapointed and wonder what the fuss was about.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
It's called "system" as an allusion to the White Castle System, which all these places were ripoffs of. White Castle was the first chain restaurant, and the idea of a "system" was so novel that they (and their imitators) boasted about it.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
I grew up in nearby East Brunswick and ate here in high school (usually late night). The first time I went I asked for my burger without onions and the guy at the register called it back "one sissy burger!" Still remember that over 15 years later. Pretty funny and embarrassing.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
I haven't been to the Highland Park White Rose. I go to the Roselle location. I think it's my favorite burger. I don't like onions, so I get mine without. Here, at least, they don't taste of onions if you don't order them. I like the large bacon cheeseburger (on a kaiser bun) and fries. Much more food and meatier burgers than White Diamond.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
Not that impressed with the burgers here. Much prefer White Diamond.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
it's supposedly called white rose "system" because they employ only ex-cons in an effort to help them get back on their feet
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
it is ALL about the fries at white rose system!!!
