Why fries have potential, but usually come out soggy/not crispy, a great strategy is to order the fries "well-done." Next time you go to a place where you know or notice the fries are on the soggy side, I recommend trying this out.

Roberto...my sentiments exactly...

That being said, perhaps each of us got a bad pie? Seems unlikely, but if I'm ever back in the area, I wouldn't be opposed to giving it another shot. I find it hard to believe that so many pizza lovers LOVE this place, and here I am shrugging my shoulders and saying "meh." Know what I mean?

And THAT being said, I'd prefer to try the other New Haven joints that have similar accolades.

Blogger: Frank Pepe's 'Overrated, Overhyped, Awful'

What's funny is that one day traveling back to NYC from visiting family, I made the stop to try Frank Pepe's and frankly, I was not impressed. It was a big let down because every single pizza that was coming out of the oven looked beyond delicious and amazing (I waited by the oven since I got mine to go). I took it back to the car to share with my lady (at the time), and neither of us were impressed. Big time let down for me.

Actually, Artichoke was great. The crust isn't as thick as it used to be, making the whole ordeal easier to put down. The ingredients are still money in the bank, although I should disclose that it probably tasted even better to me since I had already had a few pints in me.

And yes, this was the same lady that accompanied me at Flatbread. She's still my best friend though, so it's cool.

Dear Slice: The Best Staten Island Pizza Is at Salvatore's of SoHo

I always thought Denino's was the best pizza in Staten Island, no? I personally haven't tried it, but I was under the impression that if one were to trek out there for pizza, this was the place to go.

Am I wrong?

Seems we have lots of over-politically correct readers here Mr. Kuban. But I suppose that's better than having lots of a-holes, right?

In any case, I think you probably already figured out to avoid "controversial" burger joints in the future, no matter how much pressure you get. It stinks for readers who are strictly here for burger knowledge, but hey, you win some you lose some, eh?

I understand all the dislikes about this place, but has anyone out there actually tried their burgers? While it seems likely that they probably aren't all that good, and the whole novelty of the establishment is in place to distract you from the actual food, until I hear what the burgers taste like I will withhold judgment. After all, if they turn out to be tasty and I happened to be in the area, a quick pickup order might just be what the doctor ordered! (haha, couldn't help myself there)

I agree Adam...I think the whole schitck is exactly that....a schtick. If thier food was any good maybe I'd be more inclined to eat there again.

They're just trying to tap into the whole shock/controversy thing...and unfortunately that does work. Those news stations can't get enough of it. If you really want to dislike them watch the video on their homepage (How to Kill a Giant):

shhh Allison, don't let them know there is also a 200ish seat beer garden in the JC downtown area too... or anything about Savas. Hope this truck makes a few rounds around Grove st/Exchange Place area soon.

FYI you really can make a trip to Jersey City to eat dinner. I dare you. Jersey City is as close to Manhattan as Brooklyn. This truck is exactly ONE stop on the PATH train from Manhattan. [I just didn't go tonight because I already had leftovers at home.]

You can't put a price on nostalgia..especially when it comes to food. My grandmother's banana pudding with Vanilla Wafers made in an old Depression glass bowl that, I swear to God, somehow enhanced the flavor....a Theta Burger from the old, now closed, Split-T in Oklahoma City, etc. I'd gladly pay plenty of bucks to experience either one again.

Just visited Pepe's again...and Modern. Agree that the clam pie at Pepe's is great. The others, though.....aren't. In fact, they're way down the list on my criteria. Sort of tasteless....and laboriously chewy.

Though Modern's crust is floppier, the taste of their "red" pies is quite memorable, and delicious. Their clam pie suffers by comparison (the fresh clams at Pepe's are unbeatable on a pie.) IMO.

i was there for 4th of july weekend visiting from cincinnati. my brother works on the island, and mentioned that there really want anywhere to get a good burger aside from the snack bar at the beach. dammit, i wish i had made the trek over there. still had some awesome grilled burgers though.

I won't quibble with $4.50 for the burger, but $0.50 for a couple of lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato? Why don't they just grab you by the ankles and shake you upside down for the change that might fall out of your pockets?

Having grown up in MA, and spending endless summers on the Cape, and on Nantucket, I can honestly say that EVERYTHING tastes better at the beach. That salt air makes you so hungry. I remember the smell of those burgers wafting over the seabreeze. It smelled like heaven.

Looks like I've stepped into a hornet's nest but truly most of you are confirming my point. First off even when the Sonics were in town, and I was a rabid fan, I didn't buy beer at the arena. I also think it is incumbent on "Mom and Pop" to keep their product well priced and value for the dollar if they want to stay in business. If they don't deliver the goods, why should I be called upon to subsidize them?
I respect the mother for making an effort to provide the turkey sandwiches and strawberries for the family so they could afford to spend time at the upscale beaches without breaking the bank for lunch. Notice mom and dad didn't join Carey for lunch.
If you want to see the burger I've referred to go to Dick's and scroll down about half the page. Then go here to learn what they do with all the excess money after they've sold you a $2.50 burger.
Shall we talk about expensive venues? Seattle is the home of Microsoft and some of the richest burger eaters on earth and you can never visit visit Dick's without standing in line, never.

Once I had the oppurtunity to obtain some fresh road kill.Cant say what kind it was for fear of offending dog lovers, but i cleaned the meat up,removed any obvious road debris, boned it out.Ground it up with a coarse blade, mixed some fine pig fat in with it for moistness and flavor, then proceeded to make the worlds best onion burger,on a toasted sesame seed bun with pickles an special sauce. My nephew made up a burger that he calls a Squeezal Burger. I know it is not "good" for you. It is delishous. I don't know exactly what is in it. I know I saw him grinding the beef with a pound of bacon and adding loads of spices. I know that one of his secret ingredients is morel mushrooms dried and then ground into a powder.
