Expired canned beans

I have found that old condensed milk turns into a golden cajeta when the cans are opened. I was too chicken to eat it. I now take a sharpie and mark the month and the year I bought the can of whatever before putting it into my pantry. It is amazing how fast 2007 becomes 2011.

What's the oldest food you've ever eaten?

For fear that I didn't know how old some of the food in the pantry was (did I buy that can of tuna last month or ten years ago?) I started to write the month and year I buy something in big numbers with a sharpie before I put things away. Now it is easy to reach for the oldest can of tomato paste and not keep grabbing the newest.

If salt/pepper were a given, what would be your one other spice?

If garlic is considered a spice then I would choose chocolate.

Whatever you want, what would you eat right now?

An over ripe persimmon, or three. That is right now. A bit ago I would want some homemade flan. Earlier this afternoon I would say tacos al pastor from Coyoacan. This morning it would have been my mom's bread pudding.

5 Non-Lame Treats to Make for Your Valentine

For the last 29 years I have made my husband the same valentine. It's those peanut butter rice krispie treats with butterscotch chocolate icing. I think they are called scotcheroos. I like them because he loves them and I don't very much care for them so it doesn't bother me to have them hanging around winking at me. The weird thing is that through the years many of his male friends and surgical colleagues have commented on how lucky he is to have his trophy wife make them for him. ¿Is that a guy thing? Part of the appeal is that I never ever make them at any other time of the year and then, of course they get delivered with pizazz ( wink, wink.). He is so easy to please and I am one lucky girl!

Scooped: Persimmon and Honey Ice Cream

I would make this if it weren't for the fact that I ate every single persimmon on my tree in two or maybe three sittings! Love that fruit when it is ripe, when it isn't it truly is face twisting!

Has the internet changed the way you cook and eat?

@Timotheos- no, though what you are describing is what we would call "snow ice-cream.". What I am talking about is egg whites and lemon and sugar fluffed into a meringue of sorts served over a sweet egg yolk custard.
Yum!

Has the internet changed the way you cook and eat?

Besides a lot of what has been said, one of my favorite Internet finds was a recipe for snow pudding that my grandma used to make in the late 50s and 60s. By the time I grew up and wanted my comfort food, my grandma was gone and so was the recipe until the fabulousness of the Internet allowed me to find what I believe was her exact recipe. A little kiss from heaven with every bite!

The Best and Worst of Halloween Candy

1967- the last year of pillow cases filled with the big size candy bars. So many that we actually froze some in our last-years lunch boxes.
My mom worked for Warner Lambert and they made these tablets called Fizzies. They came in an aluminum sleeve and you "plop-plop-fizz-fizz-oh what-a-delish-it-is" one or two into water and a la Alka Selzer it turned into an effervescent Kool Aid. I really never acquired a taste for them but I guess employees got a discount because we gave those out on Halloween. Does anybody remember them?
Oh, BTW, I whole heartedly agree.... NECCO Wafers are gross.
