Funny, I also came to this comments section specifically to talk about this same topic- also to mention how bizarre the constant DiGiorno sponsored stories are. Unfortunately I think us die-hard longtime readers are the only ones that are even slightly bothered by this stuff and the new overall tone of the site. As someone who dearly misses Slice as a separate entity, it's disappointing to see ad posts for a lame frozen pizza every time I log on. I still read SE regularly and don't plan on stopping but I'm not loving the stylistic shift in the site as a whole and actually glad to see I'm not alone in noticing it.

We Went and Ate All the Pastries at Sqirl in Los Angeles

I agree, the pastries at Sqirl are thoughtful and excellent!

I WILL say however that Sqirl suffers from "Hipster Service"- a term I first heard from Jerry Seinfeld. I can't speak for every single employee, but I was definitely given that special brand of "why are you even here?" attitude before. I might ask "What is the Malva Cake?" and get "Malvas the city its from." as an answer with no further explanation, just a blank stare at me to follow.

Just had to vent. There is no reason for service industry professionals to act like they are 'too cool' to help their customers. Period.

In Defense of Eating Alone

I am ALLLLL about it! I was on the road alone for years and really grew comfortable doing any number of activities solo- to the point where I often now prefer it! People that only know the extremely outgoing and social side of me may be surprised at how excited I get to have alone time. Eating out, at the bar, going to movies/concerts....LOVE. IT.

But honestly the best pizza I've had all year is always any year I'm lucky enough to have Emilia's in Berkeley. Keith is the best and I'm really upset I couldn't make it there this month. Excited for post-holiday Emilia's special time!!!
