I'm in a Doughnut State of Mind

Ed, I couldn't agree with you more...I find the doughnuts at the Donut Plant way too big ,dense and doughy with a burnt almost bitter after taste...The toppings are wonderful but overwhlmed by the dough...The funny thing is the accessories are usually better than the donuts...Coffee, juices and when they make rolls, they are excellent.

For me , give me those little hole in the wall donut shops that you used to find by subway entrances in days gone by...

PS. And dont forget the old Horn & Hardarts sugar donut...Heaven...

Your Worst Meal Ever

I moved to manhattan after graduating from medical school. Did my residency at an UES hospital. One day my parents visited from Brooklyn. We decided to stay local. [ This was in the mid 1980's ]. There was a restaurant/bar about on 1st avenue and 88th street on SW corner sort of like a Dorians type place. Served mostly burgers and a few specials...That day it was shrimp in curry sauce. I cant to this day figure out why i ordered this as i never was a fan of curry. Plate came...a pile of what seemed to be frozen, rubbery shrimp slathered with the strongest, stinkiest, goopiest yellow sauce i have ever seen with a lump of gummy tasteless white rice on the side...I got nauseous,, couldnt eat and ruined the whole meal...Even my mother was disgusted but blamed me for ordering it....!

Tim Zagat Likes Close to Home Cooking

Im sorry Ed, I cant agree...Im suprised by what seems to be an ad hominem attack...not characteristic of your laid back, friendly style...It is a bit heavy handed to accuse the Zagats in an almost conspiratorial way...Yes we know many food critics may not be the most savory characters [ no pun intended !], but i would hardly think the Zagats would base a restaurants rating on its proximity...

Does a BLT Need the L?

Ed:

You,ve had the guts to pose a question that may have gotten you burned at the stake in midiieval times!

I,ve found myself sweating in many a diner, luncheonette and coffee shop when it came time to order my BLT sans L. Many confused quizzical looks have come my way...IMHO, i just think the lettuce , at worst detracts from the perfect meld of the B&T and at best doesnt really bring much to the party...I feel as if a 100 pound weight has been lifted from my shoulders!

Your Worst Meal Ever

This really happened when I was in Georgia for my father's second funeral.

A sandwich supper that consisted of cold Velveeta and Treet sandwiches on Wonder bread dressed with MIracle Whip mixed with ketchup and pickle relish. Served with Mountain Dew, choice of regular or diet.

Do you hear the banjos?

I'm a vegan, so the obvious dairy/egg and meat products are out.
I try to avoid supermarkets and stick with my local farmers market where I can get pretty much everything I need
I may be fairly healthy but there is a lot of crap that finds itself in my cart as well. I confess to enjoying canned fruit. And pre-packed cereal

Thanks Jerzee....I've used powdered gelatin myself....I was thinking you made it with only fruit, and couldn't figure out how you got it to set that way!

I'm a vegetarian, and health-food neurotic as can be, yet have many fond memories of pop tarts.

No, I wouldn't buy them now because my palate has changed. But as a tyke the molten hot center of a frosted blueberry, strawberry, and when the 'new flavors' came out (yep, I'm that old I remember when these were new, and only came 6 to a box) of chocolate or brown sugar really hit the spot.

'Nevers' are always a combination of taste, lifestyle, health goals, and culture--not purity.

My nevers would take to long to list, but I would say of things I have NEVER bought, EVER, even shopping for a sick relative or shopping to help out a busy friend with kids:

boxed mac n' cheese
cat food
pork rinds or pork of any kind
straight granola (despite my crunchy lifestyle)
coconut
fruit leather/fruit roll-ups
100 calorie packs (sorry Ed Levine, but I think they're a 'racket' ;)
Most recent 'kid food' including Booberry cereal, Dora the Explorer cereal, because I don't have kids...
olive oil (don't like even though I'm Greek so I'm definately going to bad Greek girl hell)
Ranch dressing
Sweet and Sour Sauce
more unusual cake box flavors, like carrot or banana cake

Funny but even stuff I wouldn't buy again I have 'tried once' like Cool Whip, or bought for someone else like instant mashed potato, Jello, Twizzlers, and so forth...just because something isn't on your grocery list doesn't mean it's a regular buy or even for the purchaser.

You take your fav fruit juice or puree what you like and then make sure to follow the cold to hot and use gelatin sheets or unflavored gelatin.
raspberry, blueberry, mixed fruits just stay away from pineapple juice.
It is very light and refreshing and I want to bring it back sexy again. It is sooo good. You can add sparkling wine or water. You must try it. Gelatin sheets must be softened for five to ten minutes in cold liquid. Once the excess water has been wrung out of them, they will look and feel like wet plastic wrap. At that point, they can be added directly to hot ingredients without further warming to dissolve them, as is necessary with powder.

@JerzeeTomato: I'm just as curious as mepolo about your gelatin. How do you do it with only fruit?

Papaya and bananas are no-nos. No, no, no. It's a smell and texture thing.

Reading the comments above, it's clear that the world sure is a funny place. I grew up eating wholesome food, yet I was the kid picking the neighbor's flowers and dancing in the aisles. Thank goodness for discipline, right? The smartest person I know ate s_ _t all of his life. Has a Chemistry degree from Berkeley, yet grew-up on Pop Tarts, Ding-dongs, Wonderbread, lunchmeat and Hawaiian Punch. Was (and still is) as shy and level-headed as can be.

We are what we eat, for the most part, but one's intelligence and/or disposition doesn't seem to be altered by processed food as radically as some people suspect.
