@ Cass: The items you listed are all refrigerated. Some people appreciate having them all together - and I know this first-hand from working at a Trader Joe's. The meat should be bagged in plastic before going in to prevent leaks, but I can't stand it when I have to dig through every bag to find what goes into my fridge when I get home. When I shop, I prefer self-checkout or lines w/out baggers as I can pack food more quickly, efficiently (space-wise) and correctly than the people working there.

Cook the Book: 'Beyond the Great Wall'

A lot happened on the six-month round-the-world backpacking trip I took (street food in Taiwan, Thailand, and Morocco was among the best...). But my favorite story is from a trip to Italy and Greece I went on with a group from my high school. While in Athens, less than a week from returning home, the majority of the group opted for dinner at (*cringe*) McDonald's, after ten days of all that "strange" Italian and Greek food. Five of us politely declined and managed to find a hole-in-the-wall place up the hill. Sitting outside on the sunny steps with my friends and eating what is still the best gyro I've had in my life while everyone else was scarfing down McNuggets was a great memory, and one of the things that really convinced me that some people just don't "get it" when it comes to food.

To prepare myself: salmon marinated in teriyaki or soy/ginger sauce and pan-seared or grilled.

To eat: 1) salt-and-pepper lobster from the local Chinese place where I grew up, 2) sushi 3) the miso black cod I had at Gotham

Would You Seriously Date Someone Who Didn't Love Food?

I find it interesting that the comments are overwhelmingly about guys that are picky eaters. Are men that much worse than women when it comes to this, or do they just care less about what their SO eats (or about this thread :-)?

For me, a relationship would have to be pretty fricking amazing for me to overlook a girlfriend who wouldn't eat most of what I do. I can deal with someone who isn't as passionate about food as I am, but an overly picky eater is a near-dealbreaker.

What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?

To everyone who has seen a favorite item go missing from the shelves: it is worth calling the customer service number (1800SHOPTJS, I think) and asking them to bring it back. I worked for them from '02 to '05 and saw a (small) handful of items make a comeback after enough customers voiced their displeasure. TJ's will not hesitate to drop a product if sales are slow or their wholesale prices go up too much, but they do listen to customer feedback.

My favs: honey-sesame cashews, peanut butter-filled pretzels, frozen pizzas, bagged spinach and spinach salad, greek yogurt, Joe's O's (sold out at Union Sq. more often than not :-P ), pad thai meal kit, frozen southwestern quesadillas, etc. etc.

The prix fixe at Gotham is a great deal, but if price is not an issue at all why not go somewhere even better? (no personal recommendations for anything more expensive, unfortunately).

Best Find from Trader Joes?

My pleasure bareneed, especially when it is to bring new people into the TJ's cult. Unfortunately there isn't a store in SC yet. They have locations in Chapel Hill, Charlotte, and Cary in NC, and half a dozen locations in GA. Perhaps a road trip is in order once you get there; you can even use the excuse that you want to compare the 'cue in NC and SC (well beyond the scope of this thread).

Best Find from Trader Joes?

bareneed: There is a recently posted video of a fan-made TJs "commercial" on this site. It sums up the store better than I can, but here is a brief overview. TJs sells mostly private-label products, which are often identical to brand name ones, just with different packaging. They sell them at much lower prices than the branded counterparts, but even when they do carry items you can find elsewhere, they are often significantly cheaper. Their basic "philosophy" is to cut out middle-men as much as they can, and buy directly from manufacturers. Other ways they keep prices low are by having a more limited selection (and smaller stores) than most suburban supermarkets, limiting advertising to radio ads they record themselves, getting rid of products that don't sell well, buying from suppliers in large quantities, etc. etc. While they do sell a lot of organic and healthy food, there is also a ton of snack food and other items that are upscale but definitely off-limits to anyone on a diet (witness the bacon spinach salad containing 50 grams of fat). The stores are done up in a mock-maritime decor, with wood paneling, a ship's bell for signaling the crew, Hawaiian shirts for full-time employees, etc. As you can probably tell, people are fanatical about the place. Aside from the food and prices, there is a fun atmosphere to the stores; I worked there for three years, and constantly had people telling me that it was their favorite place to shop (for anything). The company also treats its employees better than just about anyone else does; IMHO, the only reason it never appears on Fortunes Best Companies to Work For is that it is privately held.

Ditto on the gyoza. Sesame-crusted cashews. Marinated tri-tip (almost impossible to find in any other store in New York). Frozen pizzas. Greek yogurt. Frozen raspberries at half the price of any other store. Double-roasted salsa.

kqrbob: The edamame are from Thailand.

What Burger place should I try next in NY?

Be prepared for a LONG wait at the Corner Bistro if you go on a Friday or Saturday evening. On the upside, the line is alongside the bar, so you can at least get a drink or two while you wait.

Worst Food You Ate at a Party

After reading all the replies, the commenters who listed store-bought chips and dip as the worst party food they've eaten should consider themselves lucky. To answer the OP's question, yes, it is snobby to expect more than that at a casual gathering. But that is what brings almost all of us to this site in the first place.

The worst food I can remember eating was an unidentifiable pile of chicken scraps in some sort of gluey sauce/gravy that looked like it had been scraped up from the bottom of a barrel. Other people at my table at least had whole pieces of chicken. This was at a high school band awards dinner, so in retrospect, expectations were probably too high.

Right on dmarina. Everyone knows the most important thing about food is the package it comes in and decor of the place you buy it.

Morning Rant: People who talk with food in their mouths

In my personal experience, the chewing with the mouth open seems to be much more acceptable in some cultures than in others. Has anyone come up with a tactful way of telling someone that what they grew up with may be a turn-off to a lot of other people?

Self-checkout here, but if there isn't an option for it, I usually go for the shortest line and look to see how the checkers are doing with their patrons. I also try to shop when most people don't, but there are unavoidable times when I run out of something, have forgotten something, or my regular store doesn't have what I need and I have to run all over to find it.

Five years ago I had the opportunity to travel to Thailand. While there I got to eat stir fried ants. It sounds gross but the ants didn't really have much taste to them (they were kinda lemon-y). I also had the chance to eat street food, mmmm... pad thai, so good.

My husband and I traveled to South Africa on our honeymoon. We ate and drank ourselves sick over three weeks, but I think the most memorable meal was at this fish and chips shack right on the ocean. It had it's own pier, and we watched the boats bringing in the catch while we ate. Had a wonderful meal of fried hake with delicious Windhoek beer from Namibia. I'd go back right now if I could...

Cook the Book: 'Beyond the Great Wall'

Years ago, when I was a young teenager, I travelled to Shandong province in China accompanied by my older sister and cousins. It was a trip our parents sent us on to "discover our roots". Little did they know that the tour guides provided 10-15 1 liter bottles of beer at every meal as a sign of courtesy...made for interesting times at the hotel afterwards! Our distant relatives lived in a rural village and came unexpectedly to pick us up so we could stay with them and pay respects to our ancestors buried in a neighboring vineyard. We drove in a minibus on rough roads making little conversation with our limited mandarin. Hours into the trip my cousin and I severely needed a rest stop. The only thing around was a small farm where we stopped. The old farmer sat on a fence eating corn with black fingernails and nodded towards two old wooden walls facing the fields. We walked over to them and peeked over the other side. There was nothing there but a dozens of horseflies hovering over a hole with an ancient form of a sewage system...millions of worms which lived off excrement! Beggars cannot be choosers so we took turns swatting the horseflies off each other's bare bottoms. I've never felt closer to my cousin and it's always been a memory that makes me laugh out loud.

I tried to do up my first batch of Chinese food just right. I'd bought a wok, several jars of seasonings, and all the ingredients for stir-fry chicken seasoned with Szechuan peppercorns. The recipe called for the peppercorns to be roasted in an open pan. I wasn't paying attention, and the pan started to smoke. I had to air out the house for several hours. I decided to use other seasonings, like chili paste with garlic or hot sauce if I wanted a kick to the meal. It was a lot safer.
