Best of New York Empanadas
Empanadas are not unique to the Americas, in the Philippines, there are also empanadas. You should sample the ones at the Krystal's on Roosevelt and 69th.

So, what's the difference between roast pig and roast pork? Can anyone out there tell me what the difference is?
Grilling: Longanisa
Oh, yeah. I eat longanisa at least one every two months. It's just soooooo fatty and bad for you. It's all that I can take. Next chance that I get, I'll try grilling it.

Yes. It's Eli's not Zabar's ... just because he's a Zabar ... he doesn't even have a stake in Zabar's
Off the Beaten Path: Quezo Real Mellorine Is Some Seriously Weird Ice Cream
My partner loves this ice cream. I never really liked the taste as I found the combination a bit strange. He and his brother finished the can just a week ago. It didn't even last five days. However, I strongly recommend the ube ice cream. It's yammy!!!!

Cheese and ice cream are dairy-based products. This combination shouldn't be out of the ordinary. You can try wasabi or squid ink ice cream at Japanese places if you want exotic.
Grilling: Longanisa
Your longanisa really looks good, and they're grilled! It goes well with vinegar and thinly sliced chiles and a sprinkling of rock salt. A couple of cups of steaming hot white fragrant rice will set me back 2 hours in the treadmill my friend.

@josh: Pork casings really make it authentic, sealing juices in. Beware also of Filipinos telling you their region makes the best longganisa. Like European sausages, every region makes their own.
I live in the Philippines, but I like how non-Filipinos are discovering food. I am also not averse to other cuisine. This is my first post, by the way. Josh's article made me join serious eats.

I passed by Roasted Delights this weekend. It was shuttered.
The phone is also disconnected.
Any clue as to what has happened?
Best of New York Empanadas
I used to run into the Empanada Man of Williamsburg at a bar called The Abbey. Usually during the week, around 1.30 am. Just go down there and ask the bartender Joe when the Empanada Man comes, he'll let you know.

Erin, it was nice meeting you!
What a fun and delicious evening! These are great pictures; I can almost taste it all again. Those Six Point beers were good too. I enjoyed the second course the most, especially the rillette and the ramps. And the black wheat paired with it was my favorite beer.

There's a pizza place on the UWS called Freddie and Peppers (around 76th and Amsterdam) that makes decent Chilean empanadas - much larger than Argentinian ones, with meat and raisins.
There are also a million street carts in west Harlem, Washington Heights and the Bronx with Dominican-style empanadas (more often called pastelitos, but its the same idea). Those are great, if you don't mind that they're deep fried instead of baked.

I second Empanadas Del Parque Cafe in Corona, best empanadas by far. Great flavor, variety and all freshly made to order. For Uruguayan style empanadas go to Chivito D'Oro in Jackson Heights.

Mmmm...I would have to say Buenos Aires and Empanada Mama were the best.
Queens people! Send me your favorite places, I keep hearing there are good spots there and would like to check them out.

so which is the best one?
Best of New York Empanadas
There's actually an Empanada Joe's up here in Morningside Heights, that opened about a month of two ago (B'way & 111th). I've not been in because I thought it was a chain. From your description, I might just give it a pass on quality grounds--but then I've never eaten empanadas on Mar del Plata, so maybe it'll suffice for the likes of me.

Glad you liked Roasted Delights. It's a cool place. I agree with you about the pork chops. They're almost a pork dessert. You're right about the bacon and egg fried rice and the pork chops not being on the menu. I should have mentioned that in my post.

Thanks for cluing us into this place, Ed. We ventured down on Saturday. Had the roast duck with rice which was very tasty, with a great sauce. My son adored the bacon and egg fried rice. However, we found the “pork chops” to be waay too sweet; couldn't eat more than two pieces. But altogether a real find. (NB: We could not find the pork chops or the fried rice on the menu; we had to bring out the printout of the SE review and point to the pictures.)

As a Hong-Konger here, I would say the fried rice would be alright but not in the full glory a fried should have. The rice is not supple enough; that is what can be judged from the pic . But I think we can't ask for too much about this. By the way,we called roast pig as 'Siu Yuk' in Cantonese(which actually means 'roasted meat') and roast pork as 'Cha Siu'(which means 'roasted on a skewer').
Just to share something with any Chinese food lover.

@Da_Vid The roast pig is a whole roasted pig where the skin crisps up really nice. Roast pork is a cut of pork that's been slathered in sauces and then roasted - the result is a red glazed piece of pork.

@Jescel: You should ask your butcher for pork casings, most have them or can order them for you. Alternatively, you can always buy them online.

I'm glad you like our food. Longanisa is an all time fave of mine as well (and yeah, I'm Filipino). The best ones come from Pampanga, Philippines. Anyways, I've tried making them here in the U.S., but don't know where to get the pork casings. Without them, I just wrap it up in wax paper, and fry 'em skinless... it's also good that way... :o)... I'd have to try the grilled ones.
Grilling: Longanisa
My fiancé just asked me the other day when we were too lazy to cook up a more complicated dinner and instead broke out the longanisa and had that for dinner, "mmmmmm...why is longanisa so good?" I just smiled. It is definitely "so good." The next thing on his itinerary on the culinary exploration of Filipino breakfast fare is definitely tocino.
Grilling: Longanisa
Thanks for the great recipe! I'll have to try it out next time I'm grilling.
Grilling: Longanisa
@astarteny: I just can't get into champorado. Not into molés either, so I guess there's something about chocolate in savory dishes that I just don't like. It's a breakfast fav of the finacée and her fam though :)
Grilling: Longanisa
i was just interviewing my ma about her childhood memories of food (she grew up in the philippines during the war). she mentioned this sausage, but the breakfast of champions for her was some salty dried fish with a champorado. champorado is a rice porridge with chocolate and coconut milk. she loves the combination of sweet and salty.
