Amsterdam food recommendations
You should definitely get frites from a sidewalk stand... Vlaamse Frites is near Dam Square across from the Grasshopper (and the Red Light District). My favorite topping is satay (peanut) sauce, but its worth trying the classic fritesaus if you aren't afraid of mayo on fries. For Indonesian food, Kantjil en de Tijger (on Spuistraat right near Spui square) is really tasty. And I went to the Pancake Bakery (on Prinsengracht) about once a week when I lived there. So many choices!! Have fun.

Amsterdam food recommendations
Oh, Amsterdam. First, a word to the wise: most of the food is rich and carbo-licious, so make sure you eat vegetables and fruits while you're there!
There is a delicious, tiny Middle Eastern place in De Pijp, on Ceintuurbaan between Sarphatipark and Van Woustraat, I can't recall the name (south side of the street). It's owned by an Iraqi couple and is possibly the best food (aside from frites) I had while there. The woman will take your order then go make it in the kitchen! An afternoon feast cost something like 10 euro for both of us.
There's also wonderful fair-type food and pleasant cafes lining Albert Cuypstraat, and plenty of interesting and cheap shopping. De Pijp is a shade outside of the rings, but such a relief from the tourist glut in the old city!
Amsterdam food recommendations
Stroopwaffels! (I'm probably misspelling that, fyi) If memory serves, there's a gentleman who makes them at the outdoor market. That's the best way to have them - served warm. At the same market, there's a purveyor that serves raw herring. It's extremely fresh and delicious - I really recommend it! If you're on the Prinsengracht, check out the Holtkamp bakery - it has some delicious breads and pastries. I also recommend the rijstaffels referenced above - it's typically very reasonable and the food is fun and tasty. And lastly, when I think of Amsterdam, I think of 'broodjes' (again, may be misspelled), which are sandwiches. Tis the land of the sandwich. I enjoyed many delicious and simple gouda sandwiches at cafes all over town..they go very nicely with a pils beer! Have fun! I've spent time there in the winter and while it's kind of cold and rainy, it's great to be there without the crowds. Oh - and one last tip - and it's not a food tip: Go to HEMA! It's kind of like the Dutch version of Target. But cooler.
