Serious Eats City Guide: Philadelphia (Way Beyond the Cheesesteak)
Revisiting an old post for my first ever trip to Philly, coming up. Great! Now all my research is done. And we're equidistant from BOTH gelato locations. SO excited. yay!
Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box
Standardized test days in elementary school. In response to the "make sure you eat a good, healthy breakfast that morning" note the school sent home, my mom nixed our usual oatmeal and made a big breakfast of scrambled eggs and rice with either fried spam, fried bologna, or fried hot dogs. Good thing I was a smarty, because that greasy swim in my belly might have undermined my multiple-choice skills. But it's still my ideal breakfast. YUM!

Announcing the Great American Food & Music Fest
I am considering making a road trip, but after the chaos I encountered at LA Weekly's Gold Standard event a few weeks ago, I am very wary. Similar idea of lots of favorite restaurant foods in one place. I ate a lot but it was also kind of a painful experience. :( How will you combat super long food lines?

that sounds AWESOME. When you're in the mood for something quick, cheap and greasy, I love a filet o'fish. But I hardly ever get it, because then I want some fries and if I get the whole meal I feel kinda gross afterwards. If it came like this, in a Happy Meal form, I would get this ALL THE TIME. Love it!!!
no-bake dessert ideas?

omg no more mocha lattes??? Warm thick chewy chocolate brownie with a hint of coffee powder but no walnuts with espresso ice cream, crushed oreos, warm dark chocolate fudge sauce, toasted crushed hazelnuts, and topped with faintly sweetened whipped cream with dark chocolate sauce drizzled on top. And can I have my large iced dark chocolate mocha on the side, also topped with aforementioned whipped cream and chocolate drizzle?
Risqué Orangina Ads Stir Controversy
I thought Europe was used to risque ads, but maybe not Britain so much.
This is very typical for French ads. I don't see why they're so surprised. The year I lived there I saw a giant Benetton billboard with horses mating, yogurt commercial with a naked woman running through a field, gum commercial where a nerdy white guy running a race against all black competitors chews the gum and miraculously becomes black and goes on to win ... it goes on and on.
Table Manners III: Do you eat European or American-style...
In restaurants I eat American style, though I occasionally switch back to the European style I used for that year I lived in France without realizing it. In Europe I definitely only use European style. In Asian restaurants that use chopsticks, I use chopsticks.
AND in Filipino restaurants or at home I often use a spoon in the right hand, fork in the left. Yes, this is the aforementioned shovel style. And it's the absolute best way to pick up rice, meat, and sauce all in one bite. If people haven't seen it before, it freaks them out.
I have one nephew who prefers to eat with his hands (the way his grandmother eats at home) and it's just fine by his parents as long as he doesn't do it at school where everyone assumes it's bad manners.
Nothing wrong with learning all styles, it helps you understand a culture. For instance, French people are freaked out by American style because you put your hand in your lap while you're eating, and it makes them wonder what you're doing with that hand! European style always keeps both hands on the table.

Maybe they put the sauce on it that's made out of liver! The one they use for lechon. It uses liver pate. I've seen my mom make it out of that storebought can with the red devil on it.

@wookie: hey, I woulda totally cried if someone stole my pie.
I've gotta eat more pie when I make a return trip to the South. But my current favorite is the lemon lush pie at Bake n Broil in Long Beach.
Where to eat near Michigan Ave, Chicago?
I recently spent a weekend eating all over downtown Chicago. Cafe Iberico is certainly not the best tapas around (depends where you're from I guess) but it's definitely the cheapest. Heaven on Seven is near you--I didn't make it there, but people recommended it for a Cajun breakfast.
If you want to try stuffed crust pizza, there's a Giordano's near you. But definitely go with a group so you can get a regular size pizza instead of the individual.
I second the Intelligentsia rec if you like coffee, it's really really good.
For touristy stuff, I recommend the architectural boat tour and definitely google Chicago SummerDance, they're free outdoor concerts in various locations throughout the summer, with free dance lessons (salsa, swing). You'll want to do some dancing after eating all that yummy food. Also Navy Pier has fireworks twice a week.

On Banning Photography from Restaurants
I don't understand how people who are fans of this very website could be against taking photos of food in restaurants. Aren't the pictures, the visuals, a big part of why we read it?
If you enjoy food porn, how can you be waggling your finger at the people who make it?
On Banning Photography from Restaurants
I just got back from Corton. The website asks guests to refrain from using flash photography and cell phones. I accept that gladly. You quote Drew here as saying,
"No, we're not going to stop people from taking photos," Nieporent said. "We'd just like people to be considerate of the other people in the restaurant.""
So why, when I entered, was I told that no photography was permitted. I asked nicely and was told, "no". The host asked the chef and reiterated that it was not permissible. I explained that I would not use a flash. I explained that I would not use the photos online nor for any commercial purposes. Still, my request was refused. I feel lied to based on the website only saying that "flash photography" was not permitted and also the quote here from Drew. So Drew, why is this?
The food at Corton was good but, just like Momofuku Ko, I won't be back. I see no reason to reward restaurants who don't consider my desire for a permanent memory, valid. They can make any policies they like but I still get to chose where I dine. I also chose to deal with people who advertise honestly. Drew said that, "we're not going to stop people" but that is just what they did. That to me is deceptive.
In the interest of full disclosure, the host did comp a round of drinks for us because of this. Still, it, (please, please, pardon the pun, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Tiffins ( Indian ) for best bargain lunch I would not touch with a pole. Too much hype and too little authenticity. Nothing Indian about it except the uncook like taste of its sauces and sweetishness of it., MSG comes to mind.
There are better bargain Indian lunches. Of course if you are a lazy SOB and rather stay put on ur butt then walk a block go for it, it does leave you full like a fool.
I give credit to its owner ( a Wharton grade ) whose marketing skills bar none is what makes the college a rave, another "Quiznos" franchise in the making.
But calling it Indian Cuisine....pluzze.

OMG. I did not realize Mr. Martino's was still open. Now I have to make a special trip there.
Pie 'N Burger a Purely Californian Experience
I like both Pie n'Burger and Apple Pan. Reviewer doesn't mention the pies at Pie n'Burger and it's just as well as they don't really compete with Apple Pan, even though the latter has only two varieties (apple and pecan).
As for the burgers themselves, it's a tough choice but I would give Apple Pan the edge again for a better built burger and more flavor. I don't understand the member who says they're 'sweet', an adjective that would never cross my mind when describing AP's burgers. I know that people who drink a lot of alcohol often find that most food tastes 'sweet' to them. I don't mean that as any kind of insult to the member, not saying he's an alkie or anything! Just that palates differ immensely according to culinary habits. I doubt *most* burger tasters would find AP burgers 'sweet.'
The comparison between Pn'B and In'O is apt, they remind me of one another a lot. I spend a lot more time in Pasadena than W LA but I consider Apple Pan more of a 'special' taste experience. Anyway they're both great!
On Banning Photography from Restaurants
I feel shy about taking pictures of food (I don't know why, but I feel like some sort of freak, the only person on the planet to do this, which is obviously nonsense), and only do so occasionally, but as long as other patrons are being strictly omitted from the images, and a flash isn't used, I don't think this is a problem. True, food is meant to be eaten, but sometimes it is also so impressive visually, I want to show a few friends, and I'll take a shot. I usually only move myself or the dish I'm shooting in order to ensure that other diners aren't in the shot. As long taking a picture or two is a brief, low-key incident, it seems fine.
It seems strange that any restaurant would ban even the taking of photos of the diners at one's own table, as this has been a longstanding tradition, and I can remember seeing this done even when I was a small child (in excellent restaurants), by people celebrating some special event; the waiter was often included in the shot. And let's not forget all those photos of dinners at all classes of restaurants that go back as far as the existence of the SLR camera, at least
On the other hand, use of the terms 'food porn' and 'foodie' should be punishable by law ;)
Announcing the Great American Food & Music Fest
After reading posts about people getting refunds, I decided to call Live Nation to get mine. The number I called was 877-598-8497 which is their ticketing line. Once I got to an operator I asked for a refund but she told me my tickets were non-refundable unless the event was canceled. She said there was nothing she could do and the only other option was to speak to customer service. I agreed to that and got transferred.
I waited for maybe 5 mins on the phone before an agent picked up. I said that I wanted a refund for the Great American Food and Music Fest. She asked for my order number and then put me on hold for another 5 mins. Then she came back and said my CC would be refunded the $70 for 2 tickets and I would receive an email confirmation. There was no haggling or anything. So I am pretty happy.
Announcing the Great American Food & Music Fest
I was there; I echo the comments below:
"It was a disaster. There was no organization, and after only 1 and 1/2 hours of the gates being open, vendors had ran out of food. "
I arrived after 3PM; was there until almost 8PM.
It was a train wreck the entire time.
If you are in another city where this event is scheduled to occur avoid it LIKE THE PLAGUE

Ok, so I called Livenation and got my refund. I also emailed info@greatamericanfoodandmusicfest.com. This is the response I received:
Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I am so incredibly
sorry about what you went through.
We certainly had every intention of making everything perfect. The fact
is, the problems were not anyone's fault by ours. Not the building's,
not Live Nation. We wanted to keep lines down so we invested all this
money (upfront...not too smart) for the "cashless system" that would do
just that... according to the company that was running it. This company
had a resume that included NASCAR races (200,000 +) so when we heard
that every transaction could be made in 3-seconds or less, we were in.
We had them come in a week early and start testing...making sure
everything worked...then as we opened the doors, the system failed.
The Fest did have an emergency system in place and cash banks and credit
card machines were distributed prior to the show, but it took us nearly
45-minutes to switch over and by that point, we had very large lines.
Added to that, it was our first year and we had no way to really judge
attendance. We looked at "pre-sales" and doubled them thinking that was
safe...and we would be over. We were wrong...and very sorry.
It is important to us as producers for you to understand that we do care
and put years of hard work into this just to have one company take us
down.
If you would like a refund, it isn't the easiest process, but it does
work.
PLEASE SEND A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR TICKETS BACK TO

ATTN: BOX OFFICE REFUNDS
Again, we are all so sorry this happened...but at the same time are not
giving up. We will come back next year on our tour and will have
something special for those who were put out this year.
Thank you again for writing.
Jim
So I would try to call the ticket processor first. If that doesn't work then follow the instruction on sending the copies to Shoreline.

My husband and I attend this event in Mountain View yesterday. It was a disaster. There was no organization, and after only 1 and 1/2 hours of the gates being open, vendors had ran out of food. The lines for other vendors were so long it reminded me of waiting in line at Disneyland for the newest ride. There were so many people there that walking was difficult. Unfortunately, my husband I left empty stomachs after only 30 minutes of attendance. I am going to work hard at getting my refund.
Announcing the Great American Food & Music Fest
Checkout the comments here. Some people seem to be successful in getting refunds by contacting Live Nation or the Shoreline Amphitheatre. I've called, but either the lines were busy or the offices closed. I may not be able to get back the afternoon I wasted here, but hopefully I'll at least get a refund for the ticket.
Announcing the Great American Food & Music Fest
In my opinion, The best place to go for a refund is to the promoter...or call your cc company and dispute the charge. People like Bobby Flay or Guy Fieri, have no control over a crummy event that their agent scored for them. I know of one promoter: Serious Eats.Com....ha. I really hope that they have the courtesy to address this issue and offer an apology either on this blog or somewhere that will reach out to the thousands of disappointed ticket holders and patrons.

The funny thing is, if you live in Buffalo you know that Anchor Bar wings are not very good. Most local pizza places have better wings than theirs. But oh well, at least they make them the traditional way, many people think that all kinds of spices and flour is necessary. I will never understand why people flour their wings.

Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
check out these anti-HFSC and pepsi spoof advertisements, hilarious!!!
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
New research published in Environmental Health has revealed that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is contaminated with the toxic heavy metal mercury. That means that many of the products using HFCS may also be contaminated with mercury.
"Most people don't know how high-fructose corn syrup is really made. One of those processes is a bizarre chemical brew involving the creation of caustic soda by exposing raw materials to pools of electrified mercury in a large vat. Through this process, the caustic soda gets contaminated with mercury, and when corn kernels are exposed to this caustic soda to break them down, that contamination is passed through to the HFCS.
Another toxic chemical, glutaraldehyde, is also used in the production of HFCS. It's so toxic that consuming even a small amount of it can burn a hole in your stomach."

Give me good old sugar any day...
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
First, mad props to ilovebutter for breaking it down in such an accessible way. 3.9 GPA for good reason!! *applause*
Anyway, I would feel better if I knew what happens to the corn to make it HF... is it born that way (even through genetic engineering, which, in the olden days they called hybridization), as in are the actual kernels grown sweeter compared to other corn, or... is there some kind of toxic chemical added during refining to bust up the molecules and tip the balance to bump up that 5% of additional fructose? It would make a difference to me.
But, barring the scary artificial intervention above, based on the apparent chemistry of it, I don't see a huge problem. And, before I get lynched for that, yes -- there IS too much sugar everywhere. Duh. Extra caution in every way is totally advisable. That said, I can see the industrial appeal for soda makers wanting a smooth consistent syrup that stays dissolved when the drink is cold. I can also see why it's in baked goods... because... sweeter sugar means more excited yeast, no? Resulting in fluffier bakery?
And using corn is cool! Go USA! We know corn, we brought corn to the world! Sugarcane, a little trickier, but we do have dibs on Hawaii, so, I suppose we have a friend there. I suppose we could also squeeze beets or carrots for it, but... that seems like it would be more difficult (involving even bigger nastier factories). If we weren't doing it, surely there would be someone selling us high-fructose rice syrup at a huge markup. Everyone acts like trying to make money is evil. I'm sure that all but the top 5% of the people who work for those companies are people with families, who care what happens to them. Until we can switch to socialism, it has to be that way.
Anyway, I'm not going to bring my own organic ketchup and home-baked buns to an Indians game. And if I'm somewhere where we shouldn't be drinking the water, I'd now feel better off picking a soda with HFCS over a diet soda with artificial sweeteners, which I couldn't have said BEFORE I read this article. (...and ILB's insights.)
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
funny, I thought I'd read it all after the first ten or twelve, but Johnnyc, ya got an interesting point. Lotsa people that didn't know they should be asking that question are now asking that question: what's wrong with hfcs?
And the youtube mock-up was pretty good, too...
Pro-HFCS Ads: Do They Bother You?
HCFS Contails mercury:
http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=59203968973&h=7n6QC&u=Dk3qX
It is Fructose. Baad: Fructose requires a different metabolic pathway than other carbohydrates because it basically skips glycolysis (normal carbohydrate metabolism). Because of this, fructose is an unregulated source of “acetyl CoA,” or the starting material for fatty acid synthesis. This, coupled with unstimulated leptin levels, is like opening the flood gates of fat deposition.
Linked to Diabetes:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070823094819.htm
Diabetes is a KILLER. People with HIV live longer.
HCFS is bad for the economy:
orn farmers get the majority of the funding given to farmers each year from Congress, mostly because they are horribly organized and hire lobbyists to bribe politicians into voting for pro-corn bills and spending. Imagine if all of that money was being spent giving children food education, or education in general. With all of the money going into these factory farms, very little of it is going to your local farmers and thus, very little of it is going into your local economy. Even if you buy it at your neighborhood grocery store, the dollar gets passed away from you, and toward people who don’t even need more money to begin with.
HCFS is bad for the environment: after cotton, the most pesticides in the US are used on corn. All of those pesticides get passed along to you through soda, candy, peanut butter, and even some crackers and salad dressings! Yum… Plus they get passed along as run-off into oceans and water systems that people use for drinking and bathing.
HCFS sucks, and the people that made those ads are evil asshats, like those Corporate Terrorists from Monsanto that sued the guy who put "No growth hormones!" on his milk cartons.
