Edible DIY: Paula Deen's Homemade Kit Kat Bars

Hmm ... was this supposed to be a recipe or just an "FYI - look what I made!"? I assume the butter and sugar are mixed and heated to make the "caramel-like filling," but how much peanut butter, chocolate, and butterscotch chips go into the topping? Where do the graham cracker crumbs come in? How much graham cracker crumbs in a "profusion"?

Wait ... am I being dumb, or is there no way to get to In-n-Out Burger using this flowchart?

The only way to get to In-n-Out Burger is if you're not in Canada, it's not before 10:30 pm (in other words, it's after 10:30 pm), you're on the West Coast, and it's not after 10:00 pm. The two time constraints do not jive - it can't be both after 10:30 pm and not after 10:00 pm.

Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'

Disaster: I tried to make monkey bread at a friend's apartment for his birthday. The recipe called for a bundt pan, but all I had on hand was an angel cake pan with the detachable center. I assembled everything, poured on the syrup, and popped it into the oven. Five minutes into baking, we smell smoke. Five minutes after that, the entire apartment is enveloped in a thick caustic smog.

It turns out the syrup leaked out of the pan and dripped onto the bottom heating element, burned to a crisp, and started emitting noxious fumes. I should have stuck a jelly roll pan under cake pan, but instead we had to vacate the premises for three hours.

I ruined someone's birthday and almost made his apartment unliveable! :(

What’s Your Favorite Weird Snack Combo?

Beer (light beer) and ice cream. The slight bitterness of the beer enhances the sweetness of the ice cream, and the beer's fizziness contrasts well with the creaminess of ice cream.

Cook the Book: 'Baking Unplugged'

I tried to make a 5-minute microwave brownie, but didn't realize that cocoa powder (what was in my pantry) is not the same thing as hot cocoa mix (what the recipe called for). The brownie came out bitter and dry, but the look on my boyfriend / standby taster's face was priceless as he tried to pretend it was nummers.

I guess that wasn't serious baking, though, since I was using a microwave. The funniest baking disaster is when I tried to sift baking powder and flour together for a pound cake. I kept on spilling a little white substance on the counter and freaking out that I spilled the baking powder, which would completely screw up the recipe. I started over 3 times before I finally gave up and used a fork instead of a sifter. (The pound cake came out fine, but the trash can contained 3 pounds of flour when all was said and done.)

Cook the Book: 'The Bon Appétit Fast Easy Fresh Cookbook'

Chicken, vegetables, and egg noodles simmered in broth and cream of chicken soup. If you use reduced sodium, reduced fat broth and soup and no-yolk noodles, it's pretty much nutritious. Most importantly, it's fast (30 minutes to the table) and effortless (I usually wander off while it's simmering).
