Cook the Book: 'Osteria'

My mom's chili with nice chunks of pork and beef, Hatch diced green chiles, tomatoes, a little red wine, some cumin, and warm tortillas.

So, What Did You Make?

It was just us two newlyweds with a paella pan we received as a wedding gift. We produced a Spanish feast. The first course was shrimp balls with cilantro aioli, followed by a traditional paella (meat only). We finished the meal with almond milk custards. Delicious! Though, at some point, I was homesick and craving my aunt's sausage stuffing.

Cook the Book: 'Baked, New Frontiers in Baking'

I loved ice box cake, the one made with chocolate wafers and whipped cream (or whipped topping). And no, I have not outgrown it. In fact, when I was home in Denver this past summer, I searched through my childhood book collection for The Better Homes and Gardens Junior Cookbook so I could make it for my husband. Unfortunately, I could not find the cookbook.

Cook the Book: 'Martha Stewart's Cooking School'

In the 1980s, Martha Stewart had a beautiful menus cookbook, the name of which escapes me. It was filled with lots of beauty shots and great recipes, including her buttermilk fried chicken. But my favorite recipe of hers, found in that book, was a salad composed of avocados drenched in a warm tomato dressing. So delicious! Unfortunately, that cookbook is at my mom's house and we constantly tussle over who should have it (she, who does not cook regularly, or me, who does).

Hudson River Valley This Weekend

The Culinary is closed for summer break most of this month so I am afraid you are out of luck there. Rhinebeck, across the river from Kingston has wonderful restaurants, including Gigi Trattoria and Sabroso. Also, if you seek good, cheap sushi Osaka is great. Rhinebeck also has a good farmer's market on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Just north of Kingston is Saugerties, and there you will find Miss Lucy's Kitchen which is delicious. I am afraid I have not found a lot of great places to eat in Kingston, but if you do, please share. In case you're wondering, this Colorado chic relocated to the Hudson Valley from Denver two years ago.

The Serious Eats National Doughnut Honor Roll

I just discovered fresh doughnut holes at the Cherry Creek Farmers Market in Denver this past weekend. I forget the name of the stand, but you'll know it as they only sell fries (with delicious aioli) and doughnuts. The doughnuts are light, greaseless and go down easy. They are the best I've tasted in Colorado.

Wow.. none from Missouri? Even Alton Brown knew of the legendary spots in St. Louis.

Thank you homesicktexan. I agree and was pretty much shocked that Shipley's was not even mentioned that it is from Houston. Some of my favorite glazed doughnuts when they are fresh!!!

No Sweetwaters?? Thats my favorite shop of all time. http://www.sweetwatersdonuts.com/default2.asp?active_page_id=130

I like the peanut butter and jelly donuts, and Reese's is always a crowd pleaser.

The Serious Eats National Doughnut Honor Roll

The warm, cream-filled brioche doughnut LAMILL COFFEE (1636 Silver Lake Blvd, Los Angeles) is an LA thrill comparable to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Hours after you're done you're still thinking about it, still trying to figure out what it was. The doughnut does not seem quite large enough to hold all that pastry cream filling. Maybe there is magic in those specks scraped from Madagascar vanilla beans. The fact the LAMILL serves great great coffee makes this the ultimate donut experience.

This looks like a good cookbook. I live in the northeast, so it gets COLD up here in the winter. I like to make homemade soups, chowders or stews, for supper, during the wintertime. Thanks for having the contest!
