An Upscale Casual Burger Fails to Strike a Balance at Westside Tavern in Los Angeles

That looks like medium rare to me. Most places try to pass off medium as medium rare and, in my opinion, this place deserves props for serving an actual medium rare.

The cheese seems to be a little under melted for my taste and I would be very annoyed if my burger was delivered with some uninvited mayo.

How Do You Eat with a Beard?

I've never had a problem with getting food stuck in my beard, but then I have always been a tidy eater (my napkin is spotless at the end of the meal). I suppose that it is important to keep your beard well trimmed around the mouth area and that should alleviate many potential issues. Other than that just be careful.

Is Los Angeles the Best Jewish Deli Town?

I live in the LA area and I wish this was true... but its not. Ed has it exactly right (as usual) Langers is top notch and pretty much everything else is not of note.

Also, I thought it was kind of funny that the picture was of pastrami on a french roll in a story about Jewish delis.

Steel Cut Oats. I was never a fan of oatmeal, but I find steel cut oats very pleasant. I also have incorporated savory preparations as he has suggested. For instance, oats with a bit of soy sauce and scallions makes a delightful lunch.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 11: One Fish, Two Fish, Another Bloody Fish

Jamie is a better chef than Leah, but Leah had the better dish tonight. It always comes back to the food and Jamie's food was inedible.

I thought tonight's episode was the best in a long time. It was high on technique which is my favorite part of the show.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 10: 'Monkey Ass Filled with Fried Banana'

Other than Stefan the contestants this year have been pretty weak. Jamie, Jeff, and Hosea have shown occasional competence, but nothing on the level of past contestants like Hung or maybe Richard (who wasn't really a newcomer either). Stefan blew it this week, but he has been running circles around the other contestants in most episodes.

If they aren't going to have "veterans" like Stefan on the show then the producers need to do a better job of finding talented youngsters.
