We Try Every Winter Flavor from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

Every time I visit Jeni's I am amazed with the creativity of flavors and that they usually taste better than I imagined. Right now I can't get enough of the Whiskey & Pecans made with whiskey distilled right here in Columbus. Jeni's brings out some of the best that Columbus and Ohio have to offer.

While the rest of the Midwest is going nuts for Great Lakes Christmas ale, I prefer the more subtle Bell's Christmas ale. It does not detract from the flavors of the holiday goodies that seem to be every where this time of the season.

Serious Beer: The Best Light Beer for Tailgating

Trader Joe's Simpler Times is a comparable light beer that is good for the price.

Is there any chance of there being a Serious Beer post about canned beers? There are some great options in cans now, but I'd like to know what other options are out there. We generally drink canned beers when camping and often tailgating.

New Salted Caramel Mocha at Starbucks

When in doubt ask the barista how to change the drink to fit your taste. Sometimes they have suggestions that you would not have considered.

I have the same issue with any drink that has whipped cream to go, but it reminds me to try the drink before I leave to be sure it's what I ordered and what I want. The pumpkin spice latte has the same problem.

Bake the Book: 'Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home'

As a beer fan, I thought beer in ice cream was never going to work. That was until Jeni's proved me wrong with Rockmill Golden Ale and Apricot. Beer and ice cream in perfect harmony!

This is closely followed by Jeni's five-spice pumpkin

God In A Cup: The Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Coffee by Michaele Weissman

I found this book to be a good introduction to the ways of the business of coffee for those of us who'd like just a peak. The book is written from the point of view of a person new to high-quality coffee. Granted it is just a snapshot in an ever-changing business, but it was a well written, interesting read.

It's National Farmers' Market Week

I frequent the Clintonville Farmer's Market in Columbus. Great produce, cheese, bison, and flowers every week with a local food truck and the local coffee shop serving up great breakfast options. Best part comes in the fall when pumpkins, squash, potatoes, and apples are in season, the trees start turning, and there is a slight chill in the air.

Pumpkin-Spice Latte Roundup: Whole Foods vs. Dunkin' Donuts vs. Starbucks

I agree that the other of Sbux flavored lattes are way too sweet, but a pumpkin spice latte makes the colder and darker winter mornings seem not so bad to me. It's a great treat, but I could not see having it more than once or twice a week.

For a different pumpkin option, our local coffee shop, Stauf's, has a great pumpkin chai, which is made with pumpkin puree. Again, it's on the sweet side but you get a great pumpkin flavor to go with the chai spices.

Cook the Book: 'Good Eats 2: The Middle Years'

My favorite Thanksgiving eats are pureed local rutabaga, black cherry jello mold (with black cherries inside), sweet potato casserole (no marshmallows), creamed pearl onions, and mom's blue cheese dressing. Then even better is mom's turkey soup the next week!

Iced Coffee Roundup: McDonald's, Starbucks, and Dunkin' Donuts

I prefer Starbucks because I can customize my drink, the drink is not overwhelmingly sweet, their products are consistent, and the service is routinely good. I have tried a variety of local and other chain coffee shops, and I generally get a drink with way more sugar and milk than I'd ever want. I would rather have a drink not sweet enough so I can sweeten it, because once the sugar is in there, there's no good way to get rid of that taste unless you want to dilute it with milk or half-and-half.

I suggest either halving the amount of vanilla or add a shot if you want a less sweet vanilla latte.

Serious Beer: IPA from the Midwest

As a dark beer fan I rarely cross into IPA territory, but I most gladly do so for Two Hearted. So many beers try to be Two Hearted but there's only one! I'm also a big fan of Great Lakes Commodore Perry as well as most of the Great Lakes brews. These are my lighter brews of choice in the summer.

Have to say that I really enjoy these Serious Beer reviews!

What's The Best Thing At Your Farmers' Market?

The Clintonville Farmer's Market in has become my favorite market in Columbus, Ohio, with its large variety early in the Ohio growing season. So far the bison from Ohio Bison Farm has been fantastic and has replaced all beef in my cooking. Blue Jacket Dairy's Sure Shot Quark is also great. Can't wait to see what else is to come!

I enjoy a Five Guys burger every so often. I consider them quite tasty. I'd never say it was the best burger I've ever had (Northstar Cafe, Cbus), but I've always been satisfied after eating one. If you have serious concerns about high calorie foods, you can stay away from Five Guys and pretty much every other restaurant out there. Despite what they might say, restaurants get you with food calories and/or quantity.
