Grocery Ninja: Crisp, Golden, Buttery Roti Prata—the Asian Croissant

I am living in Singapore right now and all I can say is, when I move away (someday) I don't know what I am going to do without my weekly fix of Roti Prata.

It's nice to see the frozen prata are making their way into North America but really, they are a pale comparison to my locally made prata and curry gravy.

A Visit to London's Borough Market

Every time I visit London, I visit Borough Market!

The last time I was in town I stayed at a friend's apartment a few blocks away... I was there everyday to shop for food. I especially loved Neil's Yard Dairy... an exceptionally good cheese shop.

These are quite common in Singapore. Most street vendors selling ice cream offer either bread or a wafer with a slab of ice cream. I don't think I've seen an ice cream cone from a street vendor.

As for the colours... they were odd to me at first as well but what they are is colour. It make it look sweet even if it isn't.

The key though, is that it actually tastes great. The bread just merges nicely with the sweetness of the ice cream.

It should also be noted that besides the traditional chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavours there is also durian, taro, corn and red bean.

And the Indian version of the Roti Prata with a hot dog is called a Frankie or a Kathi roll! Both super yum. The Indian version has something like chicken tandoori or paneer wrapped up inside. The Frankie has some sort of hot dog like item. I'm not sure. I saw them when I was in Bombay but I don't think I ever ate them!

You can also get them at Indian stores, like @dbdtron was suggesting. My favorite is the Kawai brand "flakey" paratha from the freezer section. It tastes like heaven. The package is green and yellow.

su lin: A roti prata wrapped around a hot dog sounds like an interesting, Asian take on the corn dog =p I've seen roti prata used as a pizza base before—actually worked pretty well.

cucumberpandan: The duck egg version sounds ike it would be heinously rich—I would love to try it =) What I would give for some acar now...

You can actually purchase this frozen at Patel Brothers around the NYC metro area as well.. the packaging I'm familiar with is yellow, and I believe it's called Malaysian Paratha.

This is similar if not the same to the flatbreads they use at Kati Roll company in the Village and in Midtown. Which is durn tasty!

This looks and sounds a lot like the Yeminite 'Malawach' that is very popular here in Israel. Traditionally fried and served with a hard boiled egg and pureed tomato, it is also quite yummy spread with Nutella...

I loved the roti canai and curry served at a favorite Malaysian restaurant in southern California. Now that I'm in Jakarta, I also get my 'fix' from frozen roti prata. (BTW, "roti" means bread in Indonesian).

There's an Indonesian twist to the filled roti prata, it's called 'martabak telor' (telor = egg), and it's sold by street vendors all over Jakarta. The martabak vendor would flip and stretch the dough over a flat griddle just like the prata man would, then crack an egg (or two, or three) onto it, sprinkled some sliced scallions and cooked, spiced ground beef to mix with the eggs, then fold everything into a rectangle. A more indulgent version can be made with duck eggs. They're best eaten hot off the grill when the golden brown shell is still crackly and crispy, accompanied by lots of acar!

Thanks for another great Asian cuisine-inspired post! :D

The grilled cheese man is still there - but in the green market rather than outside neals yard. Still smells lovely to walk past... I shop there every week for all my food too - we eat so well it's a never ending pleasure.
The shopping is also a pleasure - everyone is really helpful no matter what it is you want. Which is one of the multitude of ways it differs from the soulless joyless trudge of the supermarket. Although I have lots of favourites I still find new things to try as the market evolves. Just love it! http://practicallydaily.blogspot.com

Is the grilled cheese man (Bill Oglethorpe was his name, if i remember correctly) still there?
I last saw him my last trip to London just about 3 years ago and at the time there were troubles - he'd been chased away at least once.
Anybody know?

I love Borough Market for imported cheese and Monmouth coffee, but I do sometimes feel like I'm in a crowed, touristy, open-air Waitrose. For guaranteed local food, it pays to visit one of London's Farmer's Markets, where everything has to come from within 100 miles of London. Mmmm .. lots of sprouts and Jerusalem artichokes just now.

These are all over Singapore. You can either get them on a wafer type thing, or you can get the bread. I prefer the bread because Singapore is hot, and as the ice begins to melt, it oozes into the bread. It's really nice. I like the red bean flavor best, though my boyfriend claims to love the durian, which in my opinion tastes like a gas leak smells.
The Sicilians do something similar. They scoop gelato into brioche buns, and let me tell you, it's fantastic. Hazelnut gelato on brioche? Yes.

@missvenuz & HappyJack - I know what you guys are talking about. I saw that episode too, and I was surprised that he didn't like it after all the other questionable foods he's eaten.

@missvenuz - yeah, i remember that episode! he thought it was weird and gave it to some random filipino lady who was nearby.

my dad grew up in the philippines and one of his favorite treats is ice cream on a bun. and i saw ice cream and bread sandwiches at an ice cream place in spain a few years back, too!

Definitely one of the highlight discoveries while I was in London—there are some awesome sandwiches here, but I will never forget the heady whiff from the raclette being served piping hot from one of the stands during the colder weather!

I saw this on here before. I think the nice soft colored bread reminds me of something they make at the Shop Rite. Cute.
I have a thing about taro. One bad scratchy throat experience and now I just don't eat it.

Yeah, haven't they been selling those in the Philippines for years?

And didn't I see Andrew Zimmern eat one on Bizarre Foods? SEers, does anyone know what I'm talking about?
