Critic-Turned-Cook Finds Critical Eating Habit Hard to Break

If it's a more expensive place, we have too many other places we rarely get to try, so even meh food or service means we don't go back. More casual/midprice places will get a second chance if the service is mediocre or some of the food isn't good. But if both are way off, we won't go back for a second try.

Do you go simple or complicated for your tailgate?

we tend to go somewhere in between. i love to cook and love to organize parties, but most of the guys would be happy as long as there's something on the grill and a cooler full of beer. this weekend it's all-american - burgers and brats, potato salad, chips and dip, basic desserts. for a big game in a few weeks, it's a fiesta - slice up grilled chicken and flank steak for tacos, homemade guac and salsa, etc. the last home game of the year is always chili and other warm stuff.

Gluten Free in Columbus

Not sure what part of the Columbus area your mom is in, but the Dublin farmers market, which takes place on Wednesdays from 4:30-7 in a church parking lot in Old Dublin (161 just west of High St/Dublin Rd), has a stand called Gluten Free You and Me that sells gluten-free baked goods.

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

eggs scrambled with whatever veggies and cheese are in the fridge. or tuna salad sandwiches, because my s.o. hates the smell so i can't make them when he is around. or pasta tossed with parmesan, olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 75: Can (and Should) I Give Up the Flavored Liquid Habit?

I am pretty much a water-only girl ... my body has a low tolerance for caffeine, and I'm hypoglycemic so can't do much sugary pop or juice. Well, plus alcohol a couple nights a week ; ).

BUT every now and then I get tired of it and want something different. In the summers, I've especially been enjoying iced tea made with Tazo's pomegranate green (decaf; although the regular has very minimal caffeine) tea. Refreshing and just fruity enough!

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'Rustic Fruit Desserts'

for a quick dessert in the fall, i'll throw together individual pear or apple crumbles - toss with lemon juice, cinnamon, and flour; top with a mix of oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter; stick in the overn til golden on top. yum!

Hamburger America: Thurman Cafe in Columbus, Ohio

I also dig Thurman's burgers, but not the Thurman burger. Even without all that cheese, we have to split one of the 3/4 pound burgers to finish it!

St. Patty's Day Eats: What are you making?

I live in a town called Dublin, so they do up the Irish thing big. We did the annual St. Patrick's Day race and parade this weekend followed by having everyone over for shepherd's pie along with Guinness, Smithwick's, and a local brewery's Irish ale. Tonight we're having corned beef, colcannon, and roasted carrots. Tomorrow I have class all night after work (boo!), but at least I'll have a reuben made with the leftovers!

@njgood, St. Patrick's Day until somewhat recently was a religious holiday in Ireland, and it WAS the Americans who made it the big drunkfest it is. But I have been there for St. Patrick's Day and it is now just as crazy as it is here!

Thanks!

Making General Tso's Chicken at Home

I've used Fuschia Dunlop's recipe, found on Serious Eats, several times and it always gets rave reviews. The sauce is thick and has that sweet-spicy quality without being cloying like most American Chinese places.

Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'

Our go-to pantry meal is two extremely flavorful and filling vegetarian Indian dishes: saag paneer and chana masala. There are always chickpeas, canned tomatoes, and rice in the pantry, spinach and paneer (and often Trader Joe's naan) in the freezer, and the full range of Indian spices in the cupboard.

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: Serves One

Either a quick chickpea curry (can of chickpeas, can of diced tomatoes pureed with stick blender, lots of curry powder) over basmati rice. Or Kraft mac & cheese. I can't help it, sometimes I just get a craving. Or cereal. Cooking for just myself when my fiance is out of town seems like too much effort sometimes.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 25: Maybe 100-Calorie Snack Packs Aren't the Answer

I was also on vacation last week, which involved lots of visits to wineries and eating out and absolutely no working out. I gained back 2 lbs. But, extra workouts this week and super healthy meals along with a moratium on alcohol has led to me re-losing those already!

I am also of the mindset that diets are not for vacations, so I didn't let it get me down. Just get back on track now that you are home!

From Serious Eats

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 24: How Often Should I Weigh Myself?

I weigh myself once a week, so that I don't get too obsessed with the numbers. First thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom, no clothes. I also take my measurements every couple of weeks, because even when I'm not losing pounds it helps to know if I'm getting any smaller.

I also just got back from a week-long vacation that involved drinking every day and eating most meals out. The scale was not happy. It is time for a detox - no drinking or eating out for a couple weeks at least.

Market Scene: Spring in the Midwest

Hah. hahaha. You thought Worthington was crowded THIS weekend? That's the best it's going to get all year. Once July-Sept is here, you can barely walk through all the strollers, wagons, and cart thingies. You have to get there eaaarrrly, like before it's supposed to start early (I get there at 8:30-8:45 and it's still usually crowded but manageable).

I also enjoyed some of that delicious asparagus this weekend. Plus some mozzarella and a halloumi-type cheese from a new vendor, Blue Jacket Cheese.

The 5 Worst Candies of All Time

I definitely experienced all of those when I was younger. The only thing I liked were paper dots.

And also, I think that might be Big League Chew, not chewing tobacco? You know, that shredded gum little leaguers would chew that lost its taste in 2.3 seconds?
