Poll: How Do You Feel About Cash-Only Restaurants?

I think it is perfectly acceptable for those small, cheap, dive-y, family-owned, etc., places, where a bill is going to run you like $10/person, especially if it is clearly indicated with signage outside and inside somewhere. And particularly if there is an ATM on site.

As others have said, many of us use our debit cards for convenience or credit cards for point amassing purposes and don't make a habit of carrying much in case. Expecting someone to have $400 in cash seems ridiculous. When meals are that much, whatever the cc company's fees are can't put that much of a dent in profits.

Poll: How Do You Like Your Toast?

I like in between pale and medium - like the picture, only with a whole-wheat or multigrain bread. Temp is more important, though - it's gotta be fresh out of the toaster, and smeared with same jam or preserves!

Sophisticated wedding pizza?

Because all our guests were either taking the shuttle back to the hotel in a tiny town where everything closed early, or staying at cabins on site and would be too drunk to drive, we arranged to have 20 pizzas delivered from a local place right before the end of the reception. They were a HUGE hit!

That is definitely one way to get pizza into your wedding, but then again, our wedding was more laidback and rustic, so if you want to go for sophisticated and fancy, mini grilled or flatbread pizzas as an app sounds great!

Steak 'n Shake: The Quintessential American Cheeseburger

My first job was at a Steak 'n Shake (in IL, so close to the home site), and it is the only time in my life I've had skin problems (from being around all that grease every day). I also couldn't stomach a lot of the dishes for quite a while after working there and would stick to just the shakes.

BUT, I do enjoy their burgers again, although it seems to be hit or miss on the quality (from what I remember anyways, only going to one every couple years now, and no longer in IL). Although I haaaaate the fries - I prefer a more medium-thickness fry that's crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside.

i like a sweet potato/black bean mixture topped with overeasy eggs. also, lots of spicy indian dishes with lentils and veggies.

This Week's Pizza Poll: Do You Order Sides with Your Pizza?

I don't want to end up stuffing my face with too much pizza and I try to include a veggie with every meal, so we'll usually make a salad at home when we have pizza delivered. Depending on specials/how hungry we are, we might add wings or bread sticks (which I love even though I don't eat my pizza crusts. I can not explain myself.).

Mail-Order Ice Cream from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in Columbus, Ohio

Last summer, the sweet corn and blackberry was my go-to flavor - it's like summer in cup! The bourbon pecan is always a favorite in my house, too, and the goat cheese & cognac fig, and even the basic ohio honey & vanilla.

Yeah, we like Jeni's. It is dangerous that one opened less than 5 min from me last spring, as opposed to the 15-20 min drive we used to have to take.

NCAA Basketball Tournament: 64 Great Foods in 64 College Towns

I'm thinking exactly what winternutt is thinking. Triple XXX is a great greasy spoon diner - nothing like a plate of their biscuits and gravy at 4 am, or the Boilermaker Pete (cheeseburger with grilled onions).

I've never even HEARD of that soup place! The address I think it is in one of the newer developments that was built around my junior year, so it may not have been there yet, but still. Triple XXX! Or pizza at Boiler Market!

Poll: What Do You Prefer to Do for Dinner on Valentine's Day?

I am meh about Valentine's Day. When I was single (or not-quite-taken) through most of them in college, I got drunk with my other single friends, mainly as an excuse to party; I didn't really care about the day. Now, my husband's birthday is Feb 21 and our anniversary when dating was Feb 28, so there are more reasons to not go out of the way to make Valentine's Day special.

Your Starbucks/Cafe order

More of a tea drinker, which I keep in my desk at work. But when I "treat" myself to Starbucks, it is a tall soy *insert seasonal flavor* latte - pumpkin spice, gingerbread, peppermint mocha

From Chicago

Standing Room Only: Jeni's Ice Cream

I love Jeni's, especially the seasonal flavors! This summer, my favorite was sweet corn and blackberry - sounds weird, but awesome (no corn kernels, the cream must just be infused with it).

And justin h - I'm pretty sure that technically, Columbus IS Ohio's biggest city; Cleveland and Cincinnati just have bigger metro areas.

Sunday Brunch: Scrambled Eggs in Puff Pastry

for christmas the last couple years, i've made spicy sausage, egg, and cream cheese turnovers using puff pastry- and it is so good! the first time, i also didn't think about how much puff pastry i was using and we each ended up with double servings - so unhealthy, but so tasty!

From Serious Eats

Do You Have a Sunday Night Cooking Tradition?

lately, pizza delivery. : ) we are usually so wiped from a busy weekend that i do NOT want to cook. when things are calmers, i do like to do soups or braises or other slow cooking things. it makes the house smelly so ... home-y!

From Recipes

Eat for Eight Bucks: Lentil Soup

+1 on the curry powder! I have a couple riffs on lentil soup - one kind of french, one indian, one middle eastern; i just change up the seasonings and the veg/aromatics/garnishes. i need more veg with a meal, so we add a simple mixed green salad tossed with oil/vinegar

From Slice

Poll: How many slices is 'lunch'?

From a regular large pizza, 2 plus a salad. But I don't live in NY, so if we're talking the HUGE slices, then probably just one if I have to stay awake at my desk all afternoon! Drunken snack - probably 3.

From Drinks

Serious Beer: Winter Warmers and Christmas Beers

Great Lakes Christmas Ale is definitely one of my favorites, along with Goose Island's Mild Winter Ale (which I now is a seasonal, not necessarily just Christmas). I grew up in Chicago and now live in Ohio, so I guess I like to keep it local.

@mhghatti - I keep seeying the Mad Elf on display and waffling on whether or not to try it. It sounds like it tastes like barleywine, which I don't like, but the fact that it costs twice as much per six pack of other microbrews has me intrigued. Along with that goofy looking elf. : )

Critic-Turned-Cook Finds Critical Eating Habit Hard to Break

If it's a more expensive place, we have too many other places we rarely get to try, so even meh food or service means we don't go back. More casual/midprice places will get a second chance if the service is mediocre or some of the food isn't good. But if both are way off, we won't go back for a second try.

From Talk

Do you go simple or complicated for your tailgate?

we tend to go somewhere in between. i love to cook and love to organize parties, but most of the guys would be happy as long as there's something on the grill and a cooler full of beer. this weekend it's all-american - burgers and brats, potato salad, chips and dip, basic desserts. for a big game in a few weeks, it's a fiesta - slice up grilled chicken and flank steak for tacos, homemade guac and salsa, etc. the last home game of the year is always chili and other warm stuff.

Gluten Free in Columbus

Not sure what part of the Columbus area your mom is in, but the Dublin farmers market, which takes place on Wednesdays from 4:30-7 in a church parking lot in Old Dublin (161 just west of High St/Dublin Rd), has a stand called Gluten Free You and Me that sells gluten-free baked goods.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 75: Can (and Should) I Give Up the Flavored Liquid Habit?

I am pretty much a water-only girl ... my body has a low tolerance for caffeine, and I'm hypoglycemic so can't do much sugary pop or juice. Well, plus alcohol a couple nights a week ; ).

BUT every now and then I get tired of it and want something different. In the summers, I've especially been enjoying iced tea made with Tazo's pomegranate green (decaf; although the regular has very minimal caffeine) tea. Refreshing and just fruity enough!

Cook the Book: 'Rustic Fruit Desserts'

for a quick dessert in the fall, i'll throw together individual pear or apple crumbles - toss with lemon juice, cinnamon, and flour; top with a mix of oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter; stick in the overn til golden on top. yum!
