Needed: a meal that would win a man's heart!
I'd shy away from a heavy meal like beef, beer, and starch. You don't want him sitting on the couch loosening his belt and falling asleep afterwards do you? I did a tuscan chicken w/ white beans, polenta and carrots for my bf which was flavorful and satisfying, but didn't leave us too full for post-prandial activities.
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
I've been to the Hamburger Mary's in Andersonville (Chicago). It's obnoxious and the foods is maybe a little better than TGI Fridays. I'd suggest working on gay marriage and equal rights first and then turning our attention to making sure the gay community has its own crappy "casual dining" chains.
Hot Beef Sundaes in Lincoln, Nebraska
I went to a wedding--fairly swank otherwise--where they had a mashed potato bar: the caterer put a ball of potatoes in a martini glass for you and then you went through covering it with the usual toppings. Kind of the same idea, and also unappetizing!

Imo's Pizza: St. Louis' Inexplicably Addictive Pie
It's called "Toasted Ravioli" not "Fried Ravioli," y'all - even if the later is a better description. In addition to toasted ravs, I'd be interested to know if anyone knew the origins of the "St. Paul Sandwich," (egg foo young on a white bun w/ lettuce and mayo) another odd St. Louis food phenomenon.

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
I grew up in St. Louis, which was a strange "soda" outpost in the midst of "pop" land.
Best sushi in Chicago
I like Mirai and Bob San, both on Division in Wicker Park.
Top Chef: Block Rockin' Eats
They were on Richmond Street in the Ravenswood neighborhood. Great 'hood. Joan Cusak lives there!
Eating out in Chicago!
I moved away. Now I miss these non-chains:
1. Blind Faith Cafe (amazing veg restaurant in Evanston. You won't believe what they can do with seitan!)
2. El Barco (mexican place on Ashland that keeps it real)
3. Rick Bayless's places
4. Mirai Sushi in Wicker Park
5. Flo (so so good for mexican-inspired brunch)

@lemons: Very well said.
Imo's Pizza: St. Louis' Inexplicably Addictive Pie
@ButterButter: I can't help you with the origin of the St. Paul sandwich but thanks for reminding me of it! It's been years, even decades, since I had one but it was my "sober up so I could drive home" late-night snack many times. I usually got mine on the South Side and it was on white bread, not a bun.
Imo's Pizza: St. Louis' Inexplicably Addictive Pie
There is no reason why folks can't like Imo's and other pizzas as well. That seems to be something the detractors sometimes don't get. We have some fine pizza spots in town, and their number has increased over the past year or two. But there's room for all of them. Imo's certainly is what our kids crave when they come back to STL for visits.
N.B., be aware that most Imo's is sold as take-out or delivery; many spots don't have eat-in.
Imo's Pizza: St. Louis' Inexplicably Addictive Pie
Spent 4 years living in St Louis, departed 8 years ago, and reading this article and thinking about Imo's still made me throw up in my mouth a little.
Needed: a meal that would win a man's heart!
I know I'm late to contribute, but I wanted to share my story. When my fiance and I first started dating I won him over with leftovers! Our first date actually lasted longer than either of us had planned so I offered to make something when he said he was hungry. He said he was fine with leftovers. They happened to include Blue Cheese Macaroni and Cheese and he was smitten. Both with me and with the recipe.
The first meal he made me a week or so later on another date was amazing. Roasted Cornish Game Hens stuffed with wild rice and portobello mushrooms, mashed potatoes, perfectly sauteed green beans...it was fabulous. And he really won my heart by making an extra serving for my roomate who is a definite foody. He won her heart too and she gave me two thumbs up and told him that he had her approval. Six years later we're still cooking for eachother and together and planning a wedding!
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
It's pop. Done. Unless it's a brand name.
Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?
I live in california. Have lived here nearly all my life, and have always refered to it as coke no matter what I am drinking. I live in Riverside, CA but have also lived in San Diego, CA growing up and we called it the same in both places. Not sure who calls it soda sounds strange. But my cousins come down from Virginia and they call it Pop. Thought they were talking about those little pop rock candies the first time they asked for a pop. lol.

Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
In what i think of as a quintessential San Francisco experience, I went to the SF Hamburger Mary's many many years ago (26, count 'em!) after attending the first weekend screening of the film "Gandhi". It was my then-partner's birthday and that's what he wanted to do. It was pretty perfect, even factoring in eating cow after seeing that movie. From sublime to ridiculous, sort of. Great food, lovely flamboyance. I'm truly sorry to hear that location no longer exists. I'm not sure i can get my head around it being a franchise now.

I go to the one in Chicago all the time, and I think the burgers, as well as the drinks, are pretty fantastic. Haven't made it to Maryoke yet, but since I live in the neighborhood, I'm sure I will!
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
I live a couple blocks away from the Denver Hamburger Mary's. The burgers are decent -- but not great -- say a little better than Red Robin. The atmosphere is awesome, and the wait staff and drag queens are great. The building is kind of funky-cool, with big curtains and outrageous crown moldings and that sort of thing. It's a fun place to take co-workers or others (especially when you are trying to make some of them uncomfortable), but the burgers at City Grille a few blocks away are far superior, and where I normally go to get my burger fix.

I love that there's a restaurant chain marketing to gays. I find it amusing that it's a still big deal to some people in this country. I still wonder what the burgers taste like though... hmmmm
Anyone want to venture a guess as to when one of these will open in Palin's hometown?
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
hmm...marketing isn't really appealing sorry.
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
I'm still waiting for people to say, "I've never eaten there, but I've got lots of friends who have."
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
@Roboppy: Yeah, this is true. Maybe it will go something like this...
-- Mommy, why does that lady have a beard?
-- That's not a lady, dear, now be quiet and eat your gayburger.
Hamburger Mary's, a Gay-Friendly Burger Franchise
There used to be one in Cincinnati that had an excellent happy hour, and once hosted a Dan Savage reading. And in a city like Cincinnati, yes, there are burger joints that refuse to serve gay people.

Didn't the one in San Diego (in Hillcrest) close?
