Coq au vin on the cheap. For boyfriend's parents. NOT A GOOD IDEA.
John's bakery on Cortelyou in Ditmas Park (BK) has decent ones--on Long Island, try Buttercookie bakery on Jericho in Floral Park.
Two in New York stand out -- first, at Les Halles downtown. Quelle horreur! Cold steak frites, dirty walls, soiled tablecloth, nasty waiter. It's like the one on Park's evil little sibling, nestled down there with all the riffraff. The second at Back Forty, which I'd been really looking forward to (and had talked dad into paying for). Salty, salty food, three of us crammed into a tiny table, superhipster attitudes across the board, a misleading menu, horribly overpriced. Both times I walked out wishing I'd just cooked at home, a sure sign of Worst Meal Syndrome.
Really good, but I think next time I might add a bit more vinegar to the cabbage. Not a huge nutmeg fan but did use it still felt it needed slightly more flavor. Bacon will be on the agenda, too, but I wonder about garlic?
Marinated (like whoa) skirt steak, celery and gorgonzola salad, bbq roasted corn. Currently searching for the perfect cream cheese pie crust recipe AND a pie plate in this foreign land called New Jersey...if successful? Peach and blueberry.
