Man Bites Dog: Wal-Mart gets into organic food

Well-spoken Ed.

I have been involved in California Agriculture for the past six years and I will say without a doubt that farmers who are using "organic" as an adjective are going to get just as squeezed as those who are growing commodities.

Here are links to two of the many articles that I have written that discuss this phenomenon. The point is simple, adjectives like "Organic" or "Fair Trade" are no panacea. If farmers want to ensure their future survival they have to create their own markets.

"The Starbucks Explosion, Artisan Roasters, and the American Farmer"

Thanks for the thought provoking article.

All the best,

Brian

Ed - Thanks for the report from the awards. It was fun to get live updates from an event that is largely "off the radar." This site is developing nicely. Please let me know if I can be of assistance to you in the development/testing process.

All the best,

Brian

Ed,

Thanks for doing this, this is so cool! I am happy for Suzanne Goin as well. Chris served my olive oil at her wedding so I feel a connection to her. Speaking of oil, did that bottle ever get to you?

Your friend in Alameda, Ca.

Ed-

Thanks for the fine report. The fact that Suzanne Goin had her wedding at Pizzeria Bianco is one of the coolest things to learn. I wish I had thought of that. Chris is a master and a true artist and one of the most interesting guys I've ever met. From your book, it's obvious that you share my appreciation for his work, and I wish that I could make it out to Phoenix more than once a year to taste his pies. As you learned the hard way, Boston pizza is lacking to say the least. Keep up the good work. Your blog is a great read.

Regards,

Pete

Dear Ed,

This my first time visiting your site. Ths is way more than a blog. I really enjoyed it and have added it to my favorites. The Beard report was very well done and the content overall is top quality. The other night during diner if i soured at the word blog it is due to some "bloging" that I feel becomes mean and agenda orientated....as you mentioned, blogs need to be responsible and accountable and agree 100%. Anyway this site is much more thoughtful, complete and professional than any "blog"....so my compliments and keep up the good work.

ps. i need to call you re whos who for that person we spoke about the other night.

Regards, JVB

Did Willie Mae actually cook at the ceremony?

It's a good project. I've volunteered for about three weekends over at the Scotch House.
